HH income of £250k but we don’t feel rich?

Not a brag in the slightest! And wouldn’t discuss this non-anonymously.

DH earns just over £250k per year. Has fallen into the role really and is based on natural ability/talent as oppose to lots of hard work and training. He works very long hours though. I’m a SAHM to 3 young children.

Take home is approx £12k per month.

School fees: £3,000 per month
Mortgage, car and bills: £3500 per month
Personal savings £2000 per month
Kids savings: £450 per month
DH and I take: £500 personal money each per month
Leaves us with £2,000 per month for general spending, food shopping, days out, holidays, children’s clothes…

We don’t really go without, but we don’t feel “well off” by any means. Where are we going wrong?!

You’re saving some 24k a year — why wouldn’t you use some of that for holidays?

Have you looked into selling some of the kids clothes on Vinted?

Your putting a lot into savings though so technically you do have a lot left over each month but your choosing to save

Doubt this is a serious post but just in case:

• Being a SAHM is a privilege few can afford
• Private school is a huge privilege
• The amount you put in savings is beyond most people's wildest dreams

Being able to afford all 3 is a life full of luxuries.

Had you thought about shopping at Aldi? That should sort it.

You save £2k. Save half that and you’ll have great savings and money left over. You can’t say you have nothing left over when the reason is that you save everything not taken up by expenses. And many of your expenses are optional anyway.

I can’t imagine what would make you feel more well off. What is it that you imagine well off people do?

Well you're not rich. Your salary is £0.
Your husband isn't RICH either as he has to earn a salary. Real rich people have equity and investments.

But you are a very high earning household. If you can't live on that money, that's on you.

How can you not feel well off?

Kids in private school; and putting more than most people have from a whole full time job into savings.

I normally roll my eyes at the responses to threads from higher earners but this has to be rage bait.

We feel pinched on half that income which I know makes people cross on here but your figures are just bonkers for someone to feel poor.

If you’d said you had nothing left over after ‘essentials’ such as the massive mortgage, cars, school fees etc you’d still be being a bit dim but I’d have more sympathy.

Well you’re spending it all on an expensive house and school fees and savings. That’s where it’s going.
In the 80s/90s an equivalent income would have bought you an expensive house and school fees and savings AND a lavish lifestyle but it just doesn’t any more. You’ll get lots of read the room type posts but yes the reality is everyone expects a 250k salary to make you super rich and flying first class everywhere and having staff and ponies and holiday homes but those days are over.
Enjoy what you’ve got, we made the decision NOT to pay for schooling so we could have the lavish lifestyle bit. But we have good local schools.

Are you actually joking? You have 2k per month for food shopping and general spending. That’s after making huuuge savings for you and kids. You are comfortable beyond most people’s wildest dreams. You really need to open your eyes.
