My doctor was late to my appointment because he had been at the local country hotel full of asylum seekers...

When was the last time you had a home visit? Is this a way of managing the " problem" by them taking clinics there? Is it a way of hiding this issue? I understood they did not have access to the NHS yet I see massive bags of medicine labelled for this hotel too at the dispensary. We wait about 6-7 weeks for a routine appointment.

Perhaps they’re getting vaccinations. TB is on the rise ans one reason is immigration. It’s a good thing if they intercept it at source before they pass it onto the general population. As to what should happen ? There should be strict laws regarding immigrants. This includes entering the country legally.

Because he's working "on the side" during his NHS hours. There were adverts for GP's to do "shifts" at asylum hotels on VERY good money outside the NHS. He should not have been "moonlighting" when he should have been working during his NHS hours.

This.

His nhs patients should not have to wait because of some lucrative contract for extra work on the side.

Report him op to primary care commissioning or whatever their current name is.

Happywalnut · 17/01/2026 13:03

Exactly this! There are a lot of people in this country worse off than them, who have paid their taxes etc and are suffering.

countries like Australia don’t just let anyone in , there are strict rules but we do. We welcome anyone and let them use the services that are at breaking point and our own citizens have to wait and struggle to use these services. It’s not right. I’m not saying the asylum seekers don’t deserve what they get but I’m saying why is it to our detriment and why cant we get the same?

What is it that you can’t get that an asylum seeker can? Genuine question.

bombastix · 17/01/2026 13:05

Look what is this routine I appointment that this poster has? Her being told six or seven weeks means that clinically it’s not very important

Indianajet · 17/01/2026 11:27

Have some compassion for those worse off than you - thankfully your doctor does.

When will they have compassion for the citizens of this country?

JohnBullshit · 17/01/2026 13:05

Aye, right, they're living the dream like old school retired colonels in a country hotel, with NHS services on tap and gourmet food 24/7. Sure they are.

It's sad that something like this cannot be discussed properly. I would love to hear what suggestions the insulters have as how to deal with this issue in the long term. Many people are fed up with these issues. I grew up with many people who were immigrants and I never knew as a child that the names were not even of my country. One side of my family are first generation immigrants but the difference is these people worked hard and brought their families. I'm not seeing this right now.

The thing is you are making all sorts of ill informed judgements and asking people to contribute equally ill informed judgements and opinions. There is no proper debate or discussion.

GPs are generally and almost completely not NHS doctors. They own or work for independent organisations who are free to take on contracts to provide services. They can for example be engaged by the home office and or the NHs to provide healthcare to people detained or housed in group settings. They are still obligated to fulfil their NHS contract but may engage other people to do that.

There is usually a public health imperative to screen and vaccinate people who enter the country and live in group settings. It can be easier to do that as an outreach service than use GP practice capacity to do it.

Eyesopenwideawake · 17/01/2026 13:06

doodiethewonderdog · 17/01/2026 12:52

Where did I say I was angry? This is however the tip of an issue which impacts our country on a daily basis. People have a right to be concerned and talk about it. How should we deal with this going forward?

It's not your country. It's just the country you happened to have been born in.

Thank your god, or your lucky stars, or whatever you believe in that you weren't born in a country which is so dangerous or inhospitable that leaving is the best option.

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2026 13:06

We haven't had a asylum seeker bashing thread for a while.

Would you prefer the people had been seen at the practice?

doodiethewonderdog · 17/01/2026 13:07

20thCenturyFecks · 17/01/2026 13:03

If that's true he'll be getting paid by the Home Office. The hotels have doctors that go to these places but you can guarantee he'll not be doing it out of goodness.

By telling you that, which I'm surprised at, means he's a complete shit stirrer and making excuses.

I'm guessing he did so because our practice has a high % of elderly patients and covers a semi rural area. There has been various problems with the practice - waiting lists, appointments , issue of meds - and they have recently closed a smaller service they had in the next village. This has been highlighted in local social media.

I work on tbe London Tube. When I'm not at work and just travelling to visit family, should I not help people who may be lost or confused by the network?

If someone falls ill on the tube should an off-duty HCP not offer assistance?

If a police officer sees a robbery should s/he not report it?

I don't get your logic. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BlanketyBlankBlank · 17/01/2026 13:08

doodiethewonderdog · 17/01/2026 11:21

It's sad that this cannot be discussed. It's not goady. It's a matter of fact for some people. What is Labour's solution? To build new homes for these men. How do people on council waiting lists feel about this. We ARE allowed to raise these issues.

But what’s the point raising it on here? What’s that going to achieve?

bombastix · 17/01/2026 13:08

Btw has your health actually suffered as a result of this OP or are you just annoyed at your relative lack of importance? Because that is what it looks like to me

Yes lovely no one else disputes asylum deserve jabs and health care. The problem is this nhs df seems to have double booked himself. He shouldn't be late for his actual job because he's raking it in on the side.

What is it that you can’t get that an asylum seeker can? Genuine question.

Things like healthcare, quick appointments, no waiting lists for surgery, cancer care etc.

schools - one of my friends couldn’t get her child into the school her eldest was in because there was already 32 kids enrolled (or whatever the number was). Then when September started they had been told to increase the amount of kids to whatever to allow some asylum seekers. Its not really fair that they wouldn’t allow her child in as an extra but several others were ok.

Theres more but I haven’t got time to reply.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2026 13:09

Home visits? So much more efficient to do all of them at once.

I’m so glad that this group of people got appropriate health care.

Snorlaxo · 17/01/2026 13:09

What do you think should happen about asylum
seekers with health issues? Would you prefer that they waited in the same waiting room with you? I suspect that GPs don’t do that because of the potential for things to kick off and they don’t want to have to cancel whole days of appointments because a fight happens.

I don’t see a problem with NHS GPs having clinics at hotels and seeing lots of people in one go. (Like in Call The Midwife) Whatever your opinion on immigration, the journey will involve reasons why contagious diseases could spread- do you want outbreaks of illnesses in your local area which could be controlled with modern medicine like antibiotics and immunizations? Healthcare professionals make an oath to do no harm and help people and helping these men is included in that oath. It’s the same as people in person getting healthcare- access to healthcare is a right in a supposedly developed country.

BlanketyBlankBlank · 17/01/2026 13:08

Sp people are aware and can raise it with their MPs if needed.

Healthcare for asylum seekers should not be at the detriment of everyone else, obviously.

I'm actually learning some things on here eg the doctors' contracts. Isn't that the point of discussion as opposed to just flinging insults?

Stop being reasonable and seeing the very obvious time benefit of this! That’s not the narrative the OP wants.

Im not sure that she would want you wishing them well either.

Total waste of time. There is no requirement in a GP contract for a named individual to be available during core hours. Not even the contract holder.
