My doctor was late to my appointment because he had been at the local country hotel full of asylum seekers...

When was the last time you had a home visit? Is this a way of managing the " problem" by them taking clinics there? Is it a way of hiding this issue? I understood they did not have access to the NHS yet I see massive bags of medicine labelled for this hotel too at the dispensary. We wait about 6-7 weeks for a routine appointment.

OP, apart from this thread, has one single other post under this name…

Because he's working "on the side" during his NHS hours. There were adverts for GP's to do "shifts" at asylum hotels on VERY good money outside the NHS. He should not have been "moonlighting" when he should have been working during his NHS hours.

So no NHS doctors work many hours over and beyond their contracted shifts then? I don’t think you will find one GP in this country that works to their contracted hours then clocks off and goes home. Mine used to email me on a weekend as she was catching up or getting ahead of her week as the pressures on them are so massive. Have you never been late for work because of an unexpected event?

The question is why is an NHS doctor out doing home visits at this place when NHS funds are not supposed to be used?

Because someone is ill?

BlackCatDiscoClub · 17/01/2026 12:45

I haven't read all the messages, but just wanted to chip in with why this would make sense from the GP side.

You have a lot of people in one place. They have all come from overseas which may have specific diseasss to the area and may not have lived in the most hygienic places in between. Disease travels quickly. Spending a day checking and treating everyone there means that any transmittable diseases are contained and not spread out into the community.

Would you have the same problem with a GP doing outreach to a homeless centre for a day? Checking everyone's health, making sure no communicable disease are being spread between them? Seeing every individual homeless person would be a huge undertaking and require lots of time on travel. Seeing as many people as you can in one day in one place makes much more sense.

Cappie73 · 17/01/2026 12:46

So what would be your alternative then? Let them suffer/die?

My file is thick I can assure you.

It’s not just your file that is thick.

bombastix · 17/01/2026 12:47

I’m going to suggest that if you have to wait six or seven weeks to be seen by the GP it’s more than likely whatever your medical issue is, it’s not very debilitating. It sounds more like they regard you as nuisance.

If that’s true, which I doubt

doodiethewonderdog · 17/01/2026 12:48

It's sad that something like this cannot be discussed properly. I would love to hear what suggestions the insulters have as how to deal with this issue in the long term. Many people are fed up with these issues. I grew up with many people who were immigrants and I never knew as a child that the names were not even of my country. One side of my family are first generation immigrants but the difference is these people worked hard and brought their families. I'm not seeing this right now.

Perhaps it was an emergency. Mine was cancelled because of a woman going into labour and the doctor just rushed out saying sorry you'll have make another appointment, should I complain? And often they run late just because appointments over run. It wasn't personal!

How on earth do you know it’s not warranted to do visits to the hotel? Home visits occur for multitude of reasons.

As a doctor, I can assure you your anger needs to be directed towards 14 years of cost cutting and strangulation of the NHS, rather than immigration. Seriously.

I said these are routine issues. I said there is a different pathway for urgent cases. I can assure you this is the case.

Regardless of other things, it is appropriate for them to receive medical attention when needed.

It may be more efficient for the doctor to go to them and see a number of people in one go, than separate appointments.

You have no way of knowing how long they waited for the appointment, abd if it was a shorter or longer wait than anyone else. Or how urgent it was.

Also probably don't know how long the doctor was there, or if they did other calls first, any of which could have also made them run late.

ElizabethsTailor · 17/01/2026 12:50

Your Dr was late to your appointment 😱

OMG however did you manage? Thoughts and prayers for you for this difficult time Flowers

tripleginandtonic · 17/01/2026 12:51

You'd be complaining more id they were all in the waiting room at your local surgery. Yabu.

Far too much common sense in this post!

Can guarantee Op doesn’t want the money being spent on taxis to take asylum seekers to medical appointments as reported recently in the press, but a common sense solution to take one GP to see a whole bunch of people at once saving lots of time and money is a crazy solution!

What is your solution OP?

“Names not of my country”. Hannah, Jacob, Issac, Samuel, Joshua??

Those names ok, no?

ah, I see your type.

Whatafustercluck · 17/01/2026 12:52

They're legally entitled to seek asylum. The issue is the processing backlog. You complain about them being housed in hotels, then complain that the plan is to put them in houses. Where do you propose we put them while their applications are legally processed?

Where did I say I was angry? This is however the tip of an issue which impacts our country on a daily basis. People have a right to be concerned and talk about it. How should we deal with this going forward?

I replied to you in good faith, with no personal attacks and in order to have a reasonable discussion. I put forward a reason why the GP might have been right, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what I said.

Speak to your MP, look at nhs policies in manifestos, protest at nhs cuts, vote accordingly. Not making rage bait posts on mumsnet?

You can all come on with your personal attacks and insinuating you are a bigger person but there needs to be a longer term plan than this. What would you all suggest happens to these men in the long term ?

What I want to happen to them is what always happens, and is happening massively faster now - their claims to asylum are assessed, and they are either granted leave to remain, and can begin building a life here, or they are deported. The figures on the numbers of claims being processed and the numbers of deportations for failed claimants have risen massively under this government. The stats are there for everyone to see. But people like you don’t usually care to look for evidence to support or refute your prejudiced opinions.

Ok OP, shall we just let all of these people fester and become ill because they were not born here? I know it’s not ideal and the NHS is stretched, but I cannot imagine what the alternative is.
