user3867599 · 16/01/2026 14:31

DC is a dual citizen (US and UK), just finished university and is living and working in a city in the US where ICE is about to be deployed.

What would you say to them?

“Avoid protesting or protests”

“Avoid protesting or protests”

Even if many of your conversations during your child rearing years were about morality and choices and doing the right thing?

Avoid protesting or protests”
Yes, also including any comments on social media.

Depends on if that is more important to you, than them getting shot 🤷‍♀️

Yes because morals aren’t worth dying for. What is he thinking of doing?

Well if you think its right to stick your head above the parrapet, tell him to do that.
If you want to avoid drawing attention to yourself ,avoid protests.
Its one or the other I think.

sorrynotathome · 16/01/2026 14:36

Come home.

EasternEcho · 16/01/2026 14:36

Have some sort of proof of citizenship with them at all times, especially if not White.

KillTheTurkey · 16/01/2026 14:38

‘Doing the right thing’ is keeping safe, in this case, so avoiding protests or run-ins with law enforcers.

GasPanic · 16/01/2026 14:38

Keep your ear to the ground for local advice and not rely on the advice of a load of randoms on an internet forum from a completely different country.

Of course not, but having instilled them, it's pretty difficult to then say, never mind.

Why look to put yourself in danger??

Joining local protests. DC ordinarily very responsible, prudent and level headed.

@EasternEcho White, so I guess that's some small measure of comfort, but so was Renee Good.

Tell him to get out of America. No job or uni is worth that.

Of course the mum in me feels that way, but the person in me realises the same theory could apply to the people who hid jews in Germany or helped slaves escape the south.

It's hard to not be torn on this.

I wouldn't say anything because they are an adult and quite capable of looking after themselves, without interference from a parent who doesn't even live in the city in question.

DC is living a very happy and productive life in a liberal northeastern city which has, so far, been essentially untouched by this madness. I'm not going to tell them that.

What ethnicity is he? Because the truth of the matter is, there are US citizens who are just going about their daily business and being brutally detained. They are certainly not people 'putting their head above the parapet' or trying to cause any trouble, they're just ordinary people going to work or taking their kids to school. The advice is surely different, sadly, depending what he looks and sounds like.

It sounds like you don’t really want advice but confirmation that they should protest, which no one with a conscience is going to do in case something bad happens to them.

Would they like to stay in the US?

I suspect that would be the reply, although said nicely. It's true I'm not there, but I grew up there, my parents are close by as is one sibling and family.

Oh, I agree. DC is white, dark blond, so unlikely to be mistaken as there unlawfully, but I do worry things are ratcheting up.

They spent a good amount of time in our city. Carry some ID if you have an accent or skin color that would get you noticed.
Consider a whistle, can be useful in street collection situations.
Don’t go looking for trouble, if you want to help join a local group.
There were groups that shielded dc at school pick up for example. Other groups helped distribute legal information about excluding ice from businesses and signs relating to this.
Some provided legal advice.
What skills and knowledge does your dc have? Do they want to be actively involved?

I do want advice about the complexities of how to approach making decisions around walking the line between morality and safety.

Tell them to leave the US, tell them to stay home isn't that.

Thank you. I'm going into a meeting now, but will reply later.
