To be so scared and horrified about ICE?

Sorry, I know there must be other threads about this, but I’m lying in bed alone , feeling really terrified about what’s going on in the US right now and what it will lead to. I keep seeing videos saying that Trump’s administration is behaving as though they don’t have to worry about winning an election because they will just seize power. I also saw a couple suggesting that this is the start of civil war. I think it’s such a dark time for the world and I am genuinely worried for my 6 year old DD’s future.

Not to mention that the administration has suddenly withdrawn TPS (temporary protected status) for Hatians and Somalians, making people who were in the US legally, no longer legal.

It’s not sudden, don’t you read beyond the headlines? Typically they announce an end date a few months in advance, which indicates that you need to pack up and leave.
Somalians have until March and iirc Haitians next month—but this was announced many months ago.

So if you stay beyond that? The consequences are on you

She resisted arrest. And then drove at a federal agent. Don’t say they didn’t try!

She didn’t drive at anyone. And they do not have the power to arrest her.

HipHopDontYouStop · 16/01/2026 08:28

RingoJuice · 16/01/2026 07:42

Well you read wrong.

ICE are federal agents and have the right to detain citizens who are impeding their operations.

She was waving them on.

Justification of execution. Astonishing.

How many times must it be repeated that federal agents have the right to arrest people (yes, citizens too) who impede or obstruct their operations

Shakeoffyourchains · 16/01/2026 09:05

Four ICE detainees have died in their custody in the first two weeks of January including one that's being ruled/investigated as a homicide after other detainees saw ICE guards choking the victim to death in the detention centre.

Looking forward to the collaborators attempts to justify this one.

Activists are making their job way more dangerous and difficult than it needs to be.

Are they fuck. There were no activists in the van when that kid was beaten up.

She was not impeding. She was saving them on.

How many more times does it have to be explained to you that he had no right to kill her. No right at all.

Gosh. Some people are really hard work.

HipHopDontYouStop · 16/01/2026 09:15

Absolute fiction.

Obama did it pre 2017 and bit differently. However, I would bet my trousers if he did it in 2025 even in a same way, SM would go mental (not as much aa when it's Trump tho, but still crazy)

How many people died in ICE custody during the Obama administration?

5MinuteArgument · 15/01/2026 21:52

The idea that American law enforcement is uniquely awful is for the birds.

America is way down the list of countries whose police officers kill the most people. Also if you interfered with active law enforcement operations in countries where the police are routinely armed (eg Spain, Italy, France etc) it would be likely to end badly, just like in the USA.

In 2014 US police officers killed more than 1,000 people.

In the same year, two people were killed by British police officers.

It's terrible what Trump and his administration do and say that's a given.
If it's affecting you mentally take a break from it .
For example I stopped looking at Daily mail and the comments section as it was racist ,sexist ,homophobic tripe and all in all very depressing.

Well this is why Brits don’t routinely arm the police and the groups like Border Force. Not because we’re nicer or better, we certainly aren’t. But because the police are at least potentially an arm of the state, and we fear tyranny of the state just like Americans do.

It’s obviously different in a country where such a high proportion of people do have guns. But the outcome is exactly what we would fear here; ordinary people getting shot by representatives of the government, when there were obvious alternatives.

Why are you scared? It's bad but America is just another foreign country at the end of the day. It has nothing to do us in the UK at all.

Oh I wish I had your naivety. I’ve seen a few people say this recently and they are in for such a huge shock.

RingoJuice · 16/01/2026 07:42

I think what you don't understand (probably because of the cultural differences) is that this phsychotic behaviour is not viewed as typical in the UK and lots of Europe, it is undisciplined, violent and irrational and it is incomprehensible that this is viewed as keeping people safe when it seems anything but!

On a separate note, why would anyone want to vote Reform to see this replicated here. They failed the country with Brexit, they will fail the country with their governance and import this awful, violent way of existing!

AgentJohnson · 16/01/2026 09:30

I’m interested to see how far he’ll take it but considering he’s underwater in all polls and the midterms are on the horizon, I suspect a lot of Republicans will start pushing back when their livelihoods are under threat. They will loose both houses if they don’t act now.

I had to laugh out loud when Paul Ryan called Trump a narcissist and commended Liz Cheney for standing by her principles, if only Paul Ryan had done the same.

Op step away from the news, the UK is not the US and our society wouldn’t be so accommodating of a rag tag band of unqualified and ill trained randoms roaming the streets would get much support.

You seem to have forgotten about Jan 6th ...

I can only assume that those who believe shooting Renee was justified would also feel that every one of the people breaking in against the direct orders of the police here should also have been shot?

One of the Jan 6th mob was shot, Ashli Babbitt. It was very sad and unfortunate. But she shouldn't have been there.

In fact quite similar to the shooting of Renee Good.

I agree with you that there are a lot of Brits who would absolutely love to be watching back to back clips of a British Ice tasing and manhandling brown people, plus a fiercely competitive scrap to be employed by them. I just hope there are an awful lot more who are poleaxed with horror at the idea.

I was about to say this! I think people are kidding themselves if they think many white Americans are not gleefully sitting watching harassment of non-white people (including many US citizens) knowing that the ICE raids will never touch them.

Look how they’ve reacted to the death of a white lady - attitude is serves her right because she shouldn’t have been out defending those brown people!

Ludicrous post
You live in the uk
You are not an illegal immigrant
Grow up fgs
I assume you think anyone has the right to just turn up at another country without going through the legal visa process?

Or maybe they think illegal immigration is wrong and immigrants should resect the law ?

I mean I'm not sure about 'nicer' but it is an entirely different culture and that's about things like an education system that includes children pledging their allegiance to the flag. There is certainly a boldness and ingrained superiority that again has it's benefits but also its weakness.

Yes, but you are comparing the USA to Britain. Britain has soft touch policing, unlike most of the world, including Europe. Most police forces in Europe are armed.

The USA is way down the list of countries where police kill their citizens. This information is freely available but some people want to believe that the USA is the great white satan.

That's the type of reader their paper attracts

USA appears to be 6th in the list by country, between Syria and El Salvador? I wouldn’t describe that as ‘way down’ myself.

I just looked at World Population Review, Police Killings by Country 2026, according to their data, Europe has nowhere near the figure of the U.S. Deaths from the Police - 1096 for the U.S. France had 37 for example which is pretty high as Sweden had 1, Portugal had 1 etc.
