To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

OP posts:
Giraffehaver · 15/01/2026 00:09

This is really cheap. The cheapest I could find was nearly double that

sittingonabeach · 15/01/2026 00:10

How do you think they make a living? What were you expecting to pay?

MyrtleLion · 15/01/2026 00:12

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

Sign up to Borrow My Doggy. Then make friends with someone who wants to look after your dog. Vet them and meet them and they meet the dog and stay while you assess them. When you're happy, you let them walk the dog, or have the dog while you're away. Not sure how much the sign up fee for dog owners is.

I'm guessing you're in London? Dog walkers in my area charge between £15-£18

ok so £15 an hour and howany hours will they be at your home a day with yori dogs? I'd book them, you got a bargain

JanuaryJasmine · 15/01/2026 00:15

Ablondiebutagoody · 14/01/2026 22:19

£40 per day? So £5 per hour? This is a wind up.

You know there's 24 hours in a day yeah?

MO0N · 15/01/2026 00:15

Several years ago I know people who did this on the cheap for cash while claiming benefits, and someone did it because they didnt have a fixed address.
These days I think the trend to treat pets like quasi-children means that people are willing to spend more money on them. The pet sitter is now a kind of nanny and so commands a higher wage.

Christmasjoyis · 14/01/2026 21:36

So £40 a day and they look after your house and pet? I would say that’s an absolute bargain or am I missing something? It’s a job you’re asking them to do. They will have their own house somehwhere else with costs attached to that so they need paying properly. It’s not a favour to them staying in your house ?

It is a favour to many of these sitters, they are often vulnerably housed and make many dog sitting arrangements like this to have somewhere nice or stay and of course the company of the dog.
i know that a girl had a party at my house when she sat for us and she was so spaced out when we got back but she’d been a great companion and sent us lots of pictures etc

DBD1975 · 15/01/2026 00:21

I had to pay £40 for someone to pay 2 visits to my dog on leaving him for 5 hours. They lived 5 minutes away from me and spent around 20 minutes at my property (they didn't walk the dog as he refuses to go out with anyone other than myself or my partner).
£40 for 2 days is ridiculously cheap and an absolute bargain.

This has got to be a wind up thread as no one could be that stupid.

Totally agree, the OP is unbelievable!

BeaLola · 15/01/2026 00:27

I'm amazed it's so cheap - tbh I don't have a dog but it seems pretty reasonable to me - you'd pay that for babysitting a child

Kennels would cost more surely for 2 dogs and they are also looking after your house

Your post reminds me of posters who want a bespoke cake with lots of handmade intricate decoration for a special event and expect it to cost £50 or less

If someone offers to do it for less they are either family /friend doing you a big favour or someone desperate for somewhere to stay if just soppy about dogs

NoFiller · 14/01/2026 22:53

Would it be feasible to invest in purchasing a slave? It might be a bit more up front but would save on the £20 (or £40) a day.

Brilliant!

nocoolnamesleft · 15/01/2026 00:28

That's incredibly cheap.

DBD1975 · 15/01/2026 00:30

Marylou2 · 14/01/2026 22:27

Gosh that's incredibly cheap. You trust them with your home and your pets yet you're unwilling to pay them £40 a day?

This nails it.

KenAdams · 15/01/2026 00:33

OP is on a wind up, look at her last post

XenoBitch · 15/01/2026 00:34

Yes, ridiculously cheap.
I used to pay £15 for a hour walk for my dog. And that was years ago.
£40 for a full day of care for your 2 dogs sounds really cheap. I think you have lost sight of the cost of things like this because you have had family doing it for free.
Getting "to cuddle dogs" is not some benefit that should mean they get paid peanuts.
They are also getting paid to be there if one of your dogs needs vet care. A lot of sitters/walkers have been trained in canine first aid. Have you?

pinkfondu · 14/01/2026 21:36

Pay peanuts

Get monkeys!

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 15/01/2026 00:41

I would expect to pay more for someone to come to my house to care for the dog than I pay for kennels. Our kennels has just gone up to £30 a day for one dog, so it would be more than £40 for two dogs going into kennels .

pinck · 15/01/2026 00:44

I have two dogs and pay $50 per night to board them. I also dog sit through Rover from my own home and charge $50 per dog per night — and honestly, I’d be charging more (around $100/night) if someone wanted me to stay at their house. When you factor in travel, time, 24/7 responsibility, and using someone else’s space, it’s a lot more involved than just boarding. So no, £40/day doesn’t seem unreasonable at all — if anything, it’s on the lower end for housesitting with pets.

JuliesName · 15/01/2026 00:45

All of the fake rage bait on here lately is so annoying.

NNforthispost · 15/01/2026 01:04

That’s extremely cheap (I’m based in NW) for round here. It’s less than I’d pay for one dog let alone 2.

I mean you're squabbling over £40 for a while day of looking after your dogs, how much did you expect to pay when you pay walkers £18 an hour?

I think she's calling you cheap.

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

Do you actually understand this is a business, and there will be costs, petrol to drive to your house, insurance to pay for themselves, £40 per day is cheap by any standards

They will still have utilities to pay for at their own properties and I assume they will be expected to provide their own food

if you don’t want to pay it kennel the animals,

Gingerodgers · 15/01/2026 01:44

I don’t know if this has been mentioned already, but Facebook groups offer free exchange for accommodation for a sit. I did it when travelling. You’ll have access to their facebook account and can video call. It’s based on trust

They're not at home, sleeping in their own bed. They won't have access to their own kitchen and presumably won't be socializing or going out. It's a commitment you pay for.
