To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

This has got to be a wind up thread as no one could be that stupid.

Seawolves · 14/01/2026 21:44

They might be staying at your house while they pet sit but their own mortgage/rent/bills still have to be paid.

Christmasjoyis · 14/01/2026 21:45

Is this a joke OP? I can’t fathom as to whether you are serious or not.

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

It's not the amount of physical effort you're paying for. It's somebody's time that they can't spend doing other things. Nobody's going to inconvenience themselves to that extent for £20 a day, or £140 a week.

Favouritefruits · 14/01/2026 21:46

£40 is an absolute bargain! It’s £52 a night for a cattery never mind someone staying in your house and taking the dogs out! You should have bitten her arm off. I pay my niece more than that for sitting for my cats!

TartanTwit · 14/01/2026 21:46

12.50 here for a cat minder to change the food and give 30 minutes of company for one belligerent tabby. I don't think you're remotely being ripped off.

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

A politer reply than you deserve.

She's not calling you broke she's calling you cheap and it seems she's hit the nail directly on the head. Hmm

Sprig1 · 14/01/2026 21:46

Ridiculously cheap. I bet they won't be insured for that price.

So a one hour walk in your area is £15-18. And you think for an extra £2 to £5 you can buy the other 23 hours of their time? Really?

Would you work 23 hours (without a break) for £2 -£5 total? Really?

IwanttoWFH · 14/01/2026 21:47

I’m paying a sitter £15 a day to come to my house twice a day for 30 mins each time (so an hour a day) to feed and play with my two cats. (She lives 5 minutes up the road). I am happy with this as I am paying for her time.
Having someone watch your dogs 24 hours a day for £40 is really reasonable!

Mean, I think.

Overthebow · 14/01/2026 21:49

Sounds cheap for someone staying in your home and looking after your dogs all day.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 14/01/2026 21:49

Going rates near mean in Yorkshire are 30-40 for one dog, so sounds like a bargain to me.

I pay the family member who does it for us £30 a night so I’d expect to pay a stranger a lot more.

monty2020 · 14/01/2026 21:49

Wow , she’s not staying at your home as a night away !! You work all day and night for £40 .

.....and feeding them, keeping an eye on their safety, letting them out to the toilet, making sure they have water, grooming them, making their beds comfortable, tidying up any mess, giving them any medication they need, keeping them entertained, taking them to the vet if necessary AND not being in her own home or free to do as she wishes.

It's a bargain OP but only if you value your dogs' welfare.

Mikabli · 14/01/2026 21:50

No idea about dog sitting but i used to babysit kids who were asleep in bed and i would expect a lot more than £40 for 24 hours.

But they can't do any other paid work while they're staying inside your house "cuddling with dogs" - surely that's what you're paying for....

Jeschara · 14/01/2026 21:53

Either a wind up, or the OP has not researched how much this service would cost.
I bet the sitter is laughing at you and your ignorance. She was polite in the letter though, telling you she hopes you can find something your finances can afford. Good luck with that though.

Cosyblankets · 14/01/2026 21:53

My dog walker used to charge about 40 but she wasn't here all day. She carried on with her daily walks and she either took my dog with her or my dog was left at home for a few hours. It depended on how sociable the other dogs were and if the owners wanted one to one or group walk.

Now that she's got another job I can't find anything near that price bracket so you've got a bargain. Or you would have had if you'd been more realistic about the price

There’s no way I’d give up two weeks of my life for £1.66 an hour, even if it were an easy job.

What about the time they give up, like all day?
It's unreasonable to expect them to be paid for just the dog walks if they're giving up their whole day.
Could you imagine just earning £40 a day for full days work? You're getting a bargain, stop being so entitled.
