To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

I think thats a great price my friend pays £40 per day for doggy day care it's extra if he stays overnight.

Plmnki · 16/01/2026 21:59

The sitter is thrilled they dodged a bullet. Their reply was more polite than you deserved.

if you think dog sitting and house sitting is over paid, how about you try doing it?

We use 3 different sitters and the price range is between £35-60/day. This is in East Midlands.

They are on £40 a day OP. Hardly a 'good' wage is it?! They cant earn anything else whilst looking after your two dogs can they so this is their sole form of income!
They putting your dogs into kennels and see how much that costs you..... around £25 per dog per day and I bet they won't be keeping your house secure for you 24/7 either.....
Yes you might find someone cheaper but honestly, if they're reputable and good with your dogs, they are invaluable and you'll just have to factor it in as a cost for when you go on holiday

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

She’s calling you cheap

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

Cattery where I live is £18 per day. Your dog sitter has given you a good price. I think you are being naive tbh.

fetchacloth · 16/01/2026 22:57

Seems very reasonable to me.

Lamplight101 · 16/01/2026 23:04

What do you get paid for your job? I assume it's more than £40 per 24hrs even though you presumably use your employers utilities.

Redragtoabull · 17/01/2026 00:18

They are taking 24 hours of their day to look after your beloved pets, what do you not get?

If someone can charge £18 for walking a dog for an hour why on earth would they accept an extra £2 to stay is someone’s house for 24 hours, where they’re unable to get on with their normal life? Of course it’s work, they’re in a place of work where they’re not with their family, they can’t can’t get on with cleaning their house, have friends over, go to the gym, go to the cinema with friends, do whatever hobby they usually like to do. They’re having to give up their time. It would be much easier to spend 2 hours per day walking dogs for £36 than spend 24 hours in someone’s house.

It would cost you more than that per day for putting 2 dogs in kennels, plus your house is been manned and looked after.
After been so rude telling her she's too expensive, I hope when you can't find anyone cheaper, and go back to this poor woman ,she tells you she's booked

Brilliant reply, she's not saying you're broke, she's replying to a CF

Sequins23 · 17/01/2026 09:06

I’d pay tripple… quadruple… more… to make sure that I had someone trustworthy and honest, who genuinely loved looking after my very, very much loved and part of the family dogs!

£40 a day really isn’t a lot to earn, is it now? How much would that even be for an hour?

Sounds cheap to me. They are giving up their freedom for the day.

Daftypants · 17/01/2026 13:20

That’s a steal !
kennels are between £27 per day and £36 per day for one dog where I am

Bunniemalone · 17/01/2026 14:19

£30 per dog per day here in the Midlands for boarding, you can get cheaper.. but the standards not what I'd personally choose. Had a sitter for 3 weeks about 18 months ago we have 3 dogs, Guinea pigs & pet sheep, plus they watered the planters too. Dogs walked, house clean, sheep checked. Piggies cuddled, cleaned out etc. Sent us pics ( we also have CCTV front & back as quite rural) Absolute peace of mind. Was £50 per day, which I thought was very reasonable. Left her with a fridge of food & full cupboards told her to make herself at home. Came home house cleaner than when we left, everything still alive & happy. Bargain I thought.

So when my brother looked after mums dog while she was away it meant she didn't care enough about her pet as he wasnt registered and insured

Edited

Not the same using a family member or close friend is it. The person I was replying to wanted to know how to set up as a side hustle to get a free holiday in London.. hoping strangers would hire them.

😂 have you looked at kennels? Spending 24 hours a day in someone’s house is not ‘just cuddling’z . You are being ridiculously naive. Or a CF.

dontbeataboutthebush · 16/01/2026 15:42

Well first you need to set up a business, pay for insurance, gain a pet first aid certification and then pretty much good to go. People think you just rock up but in reality anyone who cares about their pets would want someone registered and insured.

To be fair house-sitting sites do facilitate house and pet care without the pet owner paying the carer. They do get rated by previous pet owners. Having a holiday and staying in London is very doable.

Rednotdead · 19/01/2026 04:50

I think you have to work out how much it will cost you to put your 2 dogs in kennels?

AlwaysRoomForGin · 22/01/2026 11:13

£65 per 24 hours for live-in here & we are North Yorkshire. Our much loved pet sitter is worth every penny of that. She is so attentive, my animals are happy and well cared for, they LOVE her and my house is always spotless when we get back. She sends me pics and whatsapp updates and responds to any messages or queries really promptly.

If you look at kennels and/or cattery prices there's not that much in it but aside from that, I know my animals are all happiest in their own home and familiar surroundings. That alone makes it worth it.
