To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

A politer reply than you deserve.

She's not calling you broke she's calling you cheap and it seems she's hit the nail directly on the head. Hmm

Edited

Exactly. You want them there - pay for their time!!

Didimum · 14/01/2026 23:21

You’re paying for someone to be on hand for your dogs at all times. Stop claiming it’s ‘no work’ and stop being so unbelievably stingey. It’s someone’s time. Full stop.

LooLooT · 14/01/2026 23:22

That is a bargain! Our housesitter is £80 a night to look after my menagerie - worth it knowing they’re settled & my house is secure too.

Bonden · 14/01/2026 23:24

You may not be broke OP, but you sure as hell are tight

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

Not broke, just tight!

shuggles · 14/01/2026 23:33

@VibesCurator You're probably one of the people on this board that doesn't think £60k is a high salary, and yet, you're complaining about someone charging £40 for one day.

I believe that mathematics is not your strong point.

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

You come across as having a very bad attitude here OP. I hope nobody agrees to sit your dogs. You’re paying for a service. If you don’t want to pay for a service and have your dogs looked after then rehome your dogs!

Sorry but I think you are being a bit naïve here and maybe need a reality check,. Its their job, its not for love. Yeah they get free accommodation but they probably still have a home to pay for! The price of dog walkers a day would be nearly as much as that. Security guards sit and watch premises with a regular walk about, just in case something happens, whats the difference really! They are looking after your family dog, in a space the call home and the dog sitter is there at your disposal for peanuts. Its the price of having a dog.

Venicelagoon · 14/01/2026 23:40

Do you realise that gardeners charge £25 PER HOUR for their services which you'd probably call messing about with a few plants. The dog sitter has to walk and look after your dogs all day and night and not lose them or let them escape or come to any harm. Plus feed them correctly and toilet, including picking up their poo.

Usernameisunavailable · 14/01/2026 23:43

I think the OP is having a laugh / winding people up. No one’s that tight / naive are they? If not, OP, good luck finding someone reputable for less than £40 a day!

You're paying for their time, the time they can't be wherever you are.

Try thinking a bit harder. It will click in the end

SwirlyGates · 14/01/2026 23:47

You're joking, right? How many hours is your "per day"? Say 7? Then that's less than £6 per hour, when minimum wage is over £12 per hour, usually with benefits such as holiday/sick pay. It doesn't matter whether she has to do anything, or whether she is sitting painting her nails. Unless she's also working remotely from your house, she can't earn other money during that time.

😂

This CANNOT be real, if not how cheap are you??

mondaytosunday · 14/01/2026 23:51

Yea sounds normal.
Use Trustedhousesitters.com next time. You pay an annual fee (around £150) and that’s it. You don’t pay any more.

ChaliceinWonderland · 14/01/2026 22:48

Christ ! I work in a school looking after children i get half this per Hour

But you get paid for a few hours, with some job security.

Change jobs if you think theyre better off?

michelle22222222 · 14/01/2026 23:57

I'm a full-time pet and housesitter that charges $125/night for just one dog. We do more than just sit and cuddle with your pets. $40/night is a steal.

AutumnAllTheWay · 14/01/2026 23:59

Shockingly, the op has not returned 😅

Busybeemumm · 15/01/2026 00:02

Yes it's a ridiculous price- too cheap!

Netcurtainnelly · 15/01/2026 00:04

If you dont want to pay don't use their services.
No good moaning on here its not going to change.

Is she calling me broke?

Well you imply you want to pay less than 40 for 24 hours work..

And that is what it is..
The sitter is tied your house and dogs...

They're a business.

They're not going to charge less as they want to cuddle your dogs 😂

If you want to pay so little what about asking a 6th former?

caringcarer · 15/01/2026 00:05

Someone gives up their entire day and you grudge paying them £40? How much do you think they should charge per hour?

You’re paying them for their time though. Unless they are free to not be at your house the rest of the 23 hours in a day, you are paying them to give up their own time and space. Maybe if you found someone who had a WFH job they could do from your house it would be reasonable but otherwise you’re saying you think £20 a day is a reasonable wage…

They are politely telling you to take a hike.
