To think this is a ridiculous price?

First time getting a housesitter for my 2 dogs as a family member who used to watch them moved away. I got quoted £40 total per day by a sitter, AIBU for thinking this is ridiculous?

I'm not boarding them, the sitter would be staying in my house using my gas and electric. I have replied to them as much, but now that I am looking around at more sitters, it seems like an average price. How much does everyone else pay?

That’s a bit of a reach. I’m assuming your brother knows your mum, and trusts her. The post is about paid pet sitters, offering a professional service, not someone’s mum looking after Fido for the weekend.

No the poster I quoted literally said " anyone who cares about their pets would want someone registered and insured"

And if it's such a " professional" job how comes many people get friends or family to look after pets for them with mo issues. Most of it is just common sense Don't need to be Dr Dolittle

Btw what is the insurance actually for for pet sitters

Yes they did say that. On a thread about paid animal setting services, not a thread about someone’s parents looking after their dog 🙄

The care of the dog is the bloody same

Griffindor1979 · 16/01/2026 18:05

wow- is this a troll? Surely someone cannot be this delusional to expect someone to spend their day earning £20? 🤨 get your head out of the clouds and live in the real world perhaps?

Insurance: in case a dog attacks a person or animal or damages property whilst in the sitter’s care, in case an animal is injured or dies whilst in the sitter’s care and the owner takes legal action, in case the sitter loses house keys or damages the property they’re sitting.

Trusting a stranger with your home and pet is different to trusting a friend or relative. It doesn’t mean you “don’t care” if you leave your dog with your mum, it means you’ve personally risk assessed her through knowing her. You can’t do that with a stranger, so you rely on qualifications, expertise, insurance.

OP clearly went back under the bridge some time ago.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 16/01/2026 18:47

Sounds like a bargain.

Aislyn · 16/01/2026 18:50

Again, what about trusted house sitters?

If you have a nice house and live in an area that people would want to visit, accomodation and pet sitting can be a fair exchange.

Poodlelove · 16/01/2026 18:53

That's so cheap!
How are they supposed to pay their bills only earning that ?
Plus surely you want the best for your pet so I would choose the best that you can afford , a sitter with excellent references and come recommended will cost a lot more.

boodlesandpoodles · 16/01/2026 18:56

I think it’s very reasonable compared to where we are. They’re not having a treat by staying in your home, essentially they’re looking after it too and working.

Exactly, my dog sitter charges the lower amount of £50 only if she can leave the dogs for a few hours as she also does training/walks so can make up a better daily rate.

Blades2 · 16/01/2026 19:10

No she’s not calling you broke. She’s calling you cheap. Which is what you are,

Inthebasement · 16/01/2026 19:10

Mine used to charge me £70 for an overnight sit.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 16/01/2026 19:12

VibesCurator · 14/01/2026 21:43

The sitter replied: My prices reflect the level of care 2 dogs require, I hope you’re able to find somebody who better fits your financial situation.

Is she calling me broke?

Nope!
She's calling you tight! 😁

Charliebear201 · 16/01/2026 19:15

That does seem a bargain but I have to admit, it the costs of dog sitting seemed surprising to me to start with so I understand why you wanted to shop around - as with anything we always want to make sure what the going rate is. Our dogs go to a dog sitters house whilst we are away and she charges £30 for the first dog and £25 for additional dogs per day and thats in her house (all food, treats, dog bowls and beds we have to take with us) so £40 a day to stay in your home is great. I'm in the midlands for reference too

Tunamelt · 16/01/2026 19:16

Op that is very reasonable. Of course they are not just ‘ cuddling dogs ‘ between walks ! They are responsible for their wellbeing, sticking to feeding times etc.
It s their job- would you work for £40 for 24 hrs ?????

I love their reply.

Please update us when you find someone more suitable too.

Tunamelt · 16/01/2026 19:20

Op also you do realise that the sitter will be paying for travel to your home, their insurance? )And a dbs check ) it all adds up .
Why do feel entitled to
psy someone less than £2 ph and then complain thats it’s expensive!

Namechange2567 · 16/01/2026 19:23

£65 one dog north east England

DotAndCarryOne2 · 16/01/2026 19:24

VibesCurator · 14/01/2026 21:39

£20? They are only walking the dogs for an hour, the rest of the time they're just cuddling with dogs, not much work there

They’re giving their time. Have you never heard of minimum wage ? £40 per day is massively below it. YABVU.

Christmasbird · 16/01/2026 19:25

I'm in Wales and was paid 250 plus 50 tip. I was there Friday night, sat day and sat night. For 2 dogs

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 16/01/2026 19:32

OP’s not coming back.
She’s scouring the internet for someone that charges a Milky Way and kind words to take care of her dog.

Rhubarb24 · 16/01/2026 19:54

I'm guessing out of that £40 a day she would have to pay insurance(s), income tax and NI. She'd have to consider her pension. Saving towards sick days over the year when she can't work and earn. She has no free time to go out with friends and family as she is working for 24 hours. So when you factor all of that, she will not even be getting paid £1.67 an hour.

GalaxyJam · 16/01/2026 19:57

Thechaseison71 · 16/01/2026 18:02

But you’re not paying your mum. And you know your mum. These are strangers, who you are paying a wage. Entirely different scenario.

OneBlueScroller · 16/01/2026 21:53

I think your being ridiculously tight. Our dog walker /sitter charges £56 per 24h and I thought that was cheap considering she charges £18 per hour. Often two walks a day, fed twice a day, meds. Dog wants to play, can't be left alone more than a couple of hours. Dog wakes her up at 7am. Just over £2 an hour is a bargain
