What time do you go to bed and get up (excluding caring responsibilities)?

Obviously if you've got caring responsibilites etc that involve getting up at night this isnt a reasonable question to ask!

What time do you go to bed and get up and how much sleep do you need?

To feel properly refreshed I need 10+ hours. This would involve going to bed before 8 which just isnt practical. It's ridiculous.

If I have 2 nights in a row with less than 6hrs each, I cant function on the third day.

I'm trying to get into a better routine of going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning. Hopefully this will help. So 10pm - 6am.

My husband thinks he's a night owl (he isnt which is why he is knackered all the time but that's another discussion) so basically, I'm not going to see him much without the children.

At the moment I seem constantly pissed off with him so that may be a good or bad thing!

Bed by 9 or 9:30 latest. Up at 6.

I need at least 8 hours sleep, which means 9 hours in bed. I’m usually in bed (lights out) at 10 and up just before 7.

Confessionsofa40yrold · 14/01/2026 11:02

I’ve spent yrs not being able to function properly as not getting the 10 hrs I need. Finally, I’m in a position to go to bed when I please. I generally go to bed at 7.30-8pm and get up at 4.30-5am. Needs must.

Single mum here, kids are 11 and 12. We are working hard on sleep at the moment (youngest has watched a lot of "that girl" routines on youtube and the menopause is killing me). For the past two weeks, all screens are off at 7.30 (including me), we all go to bed between 8.30 and 9. All screens stay downstairs. I read until I fall asleep, usually by 10. I usually wake up naturally just before 6.30. I take well woman extra vitamins, magnesium, iron and folic acid. I feel much better for it. I saw that you asked someone if they missed their evenings. I don't, mainly because I wasn't doing anything useful with them anyway and I have found that the hour or so makes me more productive.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/01/2026 13:25

I go to bed at 10-10:30 and asleep 11-11:30. I wake up at 5:45 - 7am depending on what gym day it is. I lie in at weekends.

Im 58. I wish I could go to bed earlier. But I really am a night owl.

GlmPmum · 14/01/2026 13:30

DS 7 goes to bed at 8pm, asleep by 830. We spend an hour together doing whatever before bed at 10pm and asleep for 11pm. Alarm goes off at 630 and we all get up for work and school etc.

Natsku · 14/01/2026 13:51

I go to bed around 9/9:30 (sometimes earlier if I want to read for longer) and read for about half an hour so usually lights off by 10 (this is week nights, weekends I'll usually stay up later). I'm up at 4:30 for work. Its not really enough sleep but its hard enough going to bed so early, I can't go to bed even earlier than that.

Doone22 · 14/01/2026 19:31

I'm the same but a cause worth investigating is quality of sleep: I snore and wake up with sleep apnea frequently. Plus even if I don't snore (no consistent trigger) my smart watch says I'm only getting 20 mins of deep sleep out of my total time.

NC543210 · 14/01/2026 19:43

I dont sleep long enough.

I work 12 hour shifts which mean i leave my house at 6.30am and often don't get home until 8.30pm.

Ideally need about 7.5 hours but by the time I am in from work. Eat, prepare everything for the next day and unwind for a little it is 11.30
And I'm up again at 5.30.
Days off a little better
Get up about 7am to do the school run

10 hours? Shock I think I have very, very rarely in my whole life had more than 9. I have fairly 'good sleep hygiene' but I usually don't manage to sleep for more than 6.5 hours. I'm in bed at 10:30 and asleep by 11. More often than not, I wake up some time between 4:30 and 5:30. Sometimes I go back to sleep after a while and sometimes I can't. I get up at 6:35 for work. I'm not often tired when I get up, but I do think that cumulatively I'm not getting enough sleep.

AquaShark · 16/01/2026 09:50

I aim to be in bed, lights out by 11pm, awake by 7 am most days, sleep in til 8 one morning at thr weekend.
I have a 10 yo and a job otherwise i would happily sleep in til 8 every day.

NovemberMorn · 16/01/2026 11:50

Reading through this thread, I am amazed that so many women go to bed so early, I think I must live a parallel life to the majority on here.🤔

watchadewin · 16/01/2026 11:56

My Fitbit tells me I average 6.33 hours sleep a night.

It drives me mad as I would love to sleep longer, but I can function well and my activity levels are usually good so I assume I'm getting enough.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/01/2026 09:58

I aim for 8 hours so asleep by 11 and alarm goes off at 7. On the weekends I naturally wake up at around 8.30.

9-10 hours sleep is the ideal.

Do you miss your evenings?

No, I do a lot in the morning and daytime. I enjoy just reading in bed before I go to sleep. I do go out of an evening every couple of weeks for dinner or whatever with friends, stay out late every couple months at a gig. But for an average evening I really love getting plenty of sleep.
