What time do you go to bed and get up (excluding caring responsibilities)?

Obviously if you've got caring responsibilites etc that involve getting up at night this isnt a reasonable question to ask!

What time do you go to bed and get up and how much sleep do you need?

To feel properly refreshed I need 10+ hours. This would involve going to bed before 8 which just isnt practical. It's ridiculous.

If I have 2 nights in a row with less than 6hrs each, I cant function on the third day.

I'm trying to get into a better routine of going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning. Hopefully this will help. So 10pm - 6am.

My husband thinks he's a night owl (he isnt which is why he is knackered all the time but that's another discussion) so basically, I'm not going to see him much without the children.

At the moment I seem constantly pissed off with him so that may be a good or bad thing!

I usually go to bed around 10-10:30, and my alarm goes off at 6.
I like to listen to the news on the radio (which DH usually sleeps through), then I’m in the bathroom until about 6:45 - I like to get ready slowly! Breakfast until 7:30 ish, then I’m around (reading and drinking a second cuppa) for another half hour in case Dc need anything before school.
I leave for work at 8, Dc leave for school at the same time.

DH comes to bed around 11:30 and gets up around 7:45 onwards, as he mainly works from home. On office days he gets up about 7:30 and leaves at 8.

KStockHERO · 13/01/2026 11:56

I go to bed at about 10:30pm. I read for about an hour so lights off at 11:30pm.

I often struggle to fall asleep so the time I actually get to sleep varies - sometimes midnight, sometimes 2am. My sleep tends to then be quite uneven and easily disrupted.
I often wake at about 4am and am awake for a couple of hours.

I get up at about 8:30am if I'm working from home.

I function best on about seven hours sleep.
But I've adapted to function on as little as a couple of hours.
Most nights I probably get about four or five hours sleep.

LoveWine123 · 13/01/2026 12:00

To be honest how knackered I am and when I go to bed depends on what I am doing during the day. I wake up at 6-6:30am every morning and will go to bed exhausted at 9pm if I have been in the office. If I have been working from home I will happily stay until 11pm-12am with no issues. Going to the office means socialising and wearing a bra all day, commuting for 2 hours altogether and generally it takes a lot more energy out of me. So do everything for the kids morning and evening as husband works long hours.

UniquePinkSwan · 13/01/2026 12:02

Bed at 8.30-9.00 to read and sleeping by 10.00-10.30. Wake up at 5.30 for work.. I need around 6-8 hours a night and I’m refreshed

Zanatdy · 13/01/2026 12:07

9.30 ish to sleep, awake between 3-4. Struggle to stay asleep past 4am.

Fopar · 13/01/2026 12:13

bed around 1130-1145.

Wake up around 0830 when OH brings me a cup of tea.

When I was working, it would be bed 1130-1145, alarm at 0515, out of the house for 0600.

I am really loving the extra sleep :-)

ETA: I've completely mangled the 24hr clock thing, but cba to change it!

LeafyGreenSalad · 13/01/2026 12:14

Go to bed 8-9pm, can take a couple of hours to get to sleep. Up at 5am for exercise. I find I naturally wake up depending on the light. In summer I wake up around 4am and in winter can sleep in until 9. Does anybody else do this?

HorseyWoman · 13/01/2026 11:29

The reason you probably need 10+ hours is because you're not sleeping at consistent times and amounts. To have 10 hours followed by two nights of 5 hours, messes with the circadian rhythm and you're not getting consistent rest. I'm exactly the same.

I've found being in bed by 10, falling asleep naturally, then having to get up at 6-6.30 is much easier and I feel fine. More often than not, I go between 11 and 12 to try to get time to myself. Then fall asleep after 12, and struggle getting up. I can cope with 6 hours as long as it starts by 10.30/11.

Adult sleep cycles are 90 minutes, so I also work with that to make sure I'm not waking up partway through one, which makes you feel groggy.

That's what I'm hoping. I tend to go to bed between 10-12 (I generally fall asleep very quickly) and then getting up is aiming for 6 but depends on the snooze button. So there can be a huge variation each night.

As you implied, that can't be healthy and wont be doing me any good.

I'm hoping getting stricter with times and getting back to a proper night time routine will help.

My watch says I'm not getting enough REM even on nights when I get a good amount of sleep. It kind of validates why I sometimes still feel!

Weekdays, bed 10pm, sleep by 11pm, up at 7am.

Weekends and holidays, I might well stay up later, particularly if we're out/socialising, so I'd get up later too. I feel very out of sorts if I sleep later than 8.30/9am.

"Kids" are now Uni age adults, so they don't influence our sleep patterns anymore.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 13/01/2026 12:21

I go to bed at 9, asleep by about 10. Up at 4 (although I am usually awake a couple of times through the night for no reason)

If nothing else good came out of covid - the fact that so many women (including me) now wear bras less often has to be good! Still not ready to do anything other than go to the corner shop in a big jumper without a bra though!

Bed by 730pm, asleep for 830-9pm. Awake naturally around 6am.

Villanellesproudmum · 13/01/2026 12:24

I tend to sleep from 3 am until 6am (peri menopause) and then every now again I sleep for about 16 hours straight!

AudHvamm · 13/01/2026 12:29

I usually go to bed between 9-10 to read. Lights out 10.30-11 and it doesn't take me long to fall asleep.

Wake up usually between 6-7, but in deep winter more like 7.30. I sometimes set an alarm for 7am if we have a hard early start.

I know everyone has different sleep needs but I do find I am feel less rested when I've used my phone up until bedtime, drunk alcohol or have an accumulation of tension/stress.

I know you said it's not the point of the thread but it's really not on for one partner to make themselves unavailable every morning and/or be in a terrible mood like that. I get it because my partner also likes to push his bedtime too late, but he understands it has an impact on our whole household and makes an effort not to take the piss. I'd say this is probably adding to your stress and feeling like you don't get enough rest.

FridayNighFeeling · 13/01/2026 12:29

I brush my teeth etc at 10 and get in bed promptly and up at 6. Annoyingly next door's caring responsibilities often wake me at 5 Confused

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 12:31

I go to be between 10 and 10.30 and get up at 8 typically, I’m not asleep constantly as i sleep terribly

HRT was a godsend for me. Peri drove me to despair. The insomnia and night sweats left me feeling dreadful and like a zombie. I need at least 8 straight hrs of sleep to function properly. I must say, regular exercise and cutting out wine has helped enormously.

Do you miss your evenings?

Boododedoop · 13/01/2026 12:35

My sleep is all to pot just now but I think it’s because I’m now closer to 70 than 65. But I am working on it and I have started going back to sleep again if I’ve been awake from 3 - 5 am. It usually gets me a couple of hours to 7ish that I enjoy.

Migrainedays · 13/01/2026 12:42

Last night I think i dozed of at 2.30 am couldn't sleep for the life of me.
Woke at 10.45am.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/01/2026 12:45

I head up to bed around 11pm but by the time I've got my stuff ready for the morning, etc. it's 11.15 then I'll read and switch off by 11.45pm.

I set the alarm for 6.15 on work days and 5.15 on gym days so get around 6 hours sleep which isn't great but I'm not sacrificing my evenings just to go to bed!

OrlandointheWilderness · 13/01/2026 12:47

up at 6, bed generally 10.30. I need 8 hours ideally though 😂

Greenwriter76 · 13/01/2026 12:59

In the week I get into bed around 9.30pm and go to sleep at around 10pm. Alarm goes off 6.15am. I love my sleep and I also like to have a cuppa in bed in the morning, and I have to get up at 7am.
At weekends I go to bed at the same time and if I’m lucky with young DD laying in for a bit I wake up 6.45 / 7 ish, and we get up by 8.
DH goes to work earlier than me and finishes very late (including some weekends) so generally at weekends he lies in until closer to 9am.

NovemberMorn · 13/01/2026 13:04

I have always been a night owl. Now I can please myself my body clock has settled to bed at 2am, read till 3am, get up around 10am.
When I do have occasion to get up early, before 7am, it makes me feel physically ill.

ukathleticscoach · 13/01/2026 13:05

Bed 12:-12;30 on average up at 7 during the week. DW get up at 6:30 sometimes goes 30 mins earlier. Kids go a bit late 9 and 10:30 but they sleep in until just after 7 and go to sleep straight away. So they are not waking us up early like when younger

Am definitely a night owl would always run much better in the afternoon/ evening than morning. Find it easier to get up now though

I don't see the point going to bed an hour or two earlier then struggling to sleep. I read a book then am asleep in 5 mins

Should really go to bed a bit earlier but evening is the only time of day to yourself. Otherwise its just a robotic life work eat sleep. Have been trying not to stay up late at weekends as that messes you up even though I don't really drink
