Make pyjamas acceptable in supermarkets on Sunday mornings

It's Sunday morning. I'm jimjammed up. Warm and cosy.

But on the spur of the moment I want eggs and bacon for brekkie so need to go to the nearby supermarket.

AIBU to think that, whilst nightwear in supermarkets is an abomination at all other times, on a Sunday morning, cut off time 12pm (so only a 2-3hr window) it could be socially acceptable for people who also wake up on a Sunday morning and randomly decide they want something a bit more exciting than their usual fare to go to the shops* without having to get fully dressed? Or is it a slippery slope?

*food only, I'm not suggesting full scale wandering about town!

Of If I saw someome in a shop in pyjamas I
would assume they were mentally unwell. Lack of self care is a red flag 🚩. And I speak as someone caring for
someone with severely poor mental health. I would find it triggering. Go get dressed ffs

PoachedSmoke · 11/01/2026 12:53

In my youth (lol) I worked at a local co-op in a student residential area. Often students would come in wearing pajamas and one guy used to come in on Saturday morning in his jim jams, dressing gown and slippers! Obviously ludicrous but it did make me chuckle.

(Personally I'd never go into a shop without being fully dressed and presentable).

BookAndPiano · 11/01/2026 12:53

@BoxingHare I suppose when all is said and done the only question that remains to be answered is:

Did you enjoy the breakfast?

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 11/01/2026 12:55

I've never done it (I'm a "the second I'm out of bed in getting dressed" person, not sure why) but I always envy people in pyjamas in the supermarket. They look comfy and clearly live their lives free of concerns of what the Middle Aged Mumsnet Mafia think of them. I aspire to that.

KarenWheeler · 11/01/2026 12:55

I live in my pjs, literally! I WFH so I never get dressed unless I'm leaving the house, shower and clean pjs on is my daily routine. But, going to the supermarket, even the corner shop in your pjs is just nasty.

It takes 30 seconds to throw your jeans on! You can always put your pjs back on when you get back. That's what I do. Most of the time I don't even put a bra on, just throw a baggy hoodie over my pj top.

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 12:56

i’m wearing jogging bottoms, still cosy but street acceptable (also will wear all day as a bonus). Top tip to op and others, always pick up your bacon at 9.55pm just before coop closes, there’s usually a queue at ours, helpfully right next door to the pub.

I don't think "aspire" is the word you're looking for here-"descend" might be better.

Giftmarse · 11/01/2026 13:00

Would you wear your slippers? I've just seen a woman wandering along outside Sainsburys in fluffy pj's, dressing gown and slippers. I couldn't help thinking that wearing slippers outside to pick up goodness knows what on the soles rather defeats the point of having them.

Morecoffeethanks · 11/01/2026 13:01

Can you not just have eggs in the fridge in advance and some frozen bacon?
I live in France we’re a trip to carrefour city requires proper clothes. I was shocked people don’t go about their daily lives wearing ath-leisure wear. No school run mums in leggings here and certainly no supermarket shopping in leggings or joggers.

Lollylavender · 11/01/2026 13:02

How can a pyjama be warm enough to go outside?

Just pull on some jeans and a hoody, even over your pjs, and head out..?

BashfulClam · 11/01/2026 13:02

grrrlatrix · 11/01/2026 11:55

JEANS?!!!?! 😭😭😭

Yep they take a minute to put on.

Dogsrfunny · 11/01/2026 13:02

Last Sunday a grown man in some kind of cartoon character pj's with his 2 children also dressed in there PJ's and hoodie where in a supermarket in the local town. My first thoughts were nooooo this is not a good thing to be doing it just looks so un hygienic and lazy to me.

Yabu. Get a delivery or get changed

Isthisreasonable · 11/01/2026 13:03

Leaving the house is what kills the cosy vibe. Either stay in the warm and forgo the cooked breakfast or get dressed, get the bits you need and accept you're choosing not to stay cosy at home

It takes 2 minutes to get dressed?

Not in cold weather it doesn't!

ruethewhirl · 11/01/2026 13:03

PhantomAfternoonTea · 11/01/2026 11:33

Just put on some leggings and a hoodie - still loungewear but socially acceptable to be seen out in.

This is what I'd do. Since lockdown I virtually live in leggings and hoodies as I wfh.

BoxingHare · 11/01/2026 11:36

I love Scotland's trading laws, no ridiculous "fuck it's 1 minute past 4" feeling.

But I would argue 7am Sunday is absolutely the time to have socially acceptable jimjams!

It’s never acceptable.

That’s disgusting and defeats the point of having bed clothes and home slippers!

Imagine stepping in dog poo or wee with your fluffy house slippers 🤢🤮

You need to broader your world a little bit lol.

Not in cold weather it doesn't!

Two minutes is actually quite long - easy to pull over a hoody and jeans and grab a coat!

user38 · 11/01/2026 13:05

It’s grim. I absolutely one hundred percent judge people who do this. It’s just attention seeking and lazy.

5128gap · 11/01/2026 13:06

I think it would be easier if people just bought more comfortable clothes. Office and occasion wear excepted, why do so many people seem to have wardrobes of clothes so uncomfortable they can't wait to put on their PJs, or insufficiently relaxed or 'cosy' for a Sunday?

Soonenough · 11/01/2026 13:06

Two things : Does the two hour rule in Scotland mean you can only buy alcohol for two hours on a Sunday . And I did laugh at one poster saying you can browse though.

Why very rarely see a man in pjs and dressing gown ? Is it because they dont own them?

And I have been guilty of knee high boots and long coat on a few occasions.

It's nearly ready, just waiting for the bacon to crisp! 😋
