To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

It is part of how our family interact together... otherwise we would be all on our phones or in our rooms... it is the prop, that facilitates time spent together, if you have other family activities, maybe that works for you.

My two are 12 and 9, we play things like uno nightly when on holiday (hotel bar) and have a pretty wide selection of board games at home but with clubs/school/work etc it's usually only when it's school holidays and the pace of life is slower that we pull them out at home. The kids always ask for a new game at Christmas, this year we added Taskmaster, Herd Mentality and Traitors to our collection. Herd Mentality was great fun after Christmas dinner with a large group and we have played the other two (taskmaster is better than traitors as the dynamic of the traitor is difficult to manage)

Our boys are only 4 and 5 but I want to always play board games! We play happy families, guess who, snakes and ladders and animal bingo

Purpleturtle45 · 11/01/2026 08:06

We play board games/cards often and always have, 3 kids aged 9, 12 and 14. It's a great thing to do as a family, especially as they get older and are less interested in spending time with you/gravitating towards screens all the time. I buy a new one for family every Christmas.

EleanorReally · 11/01/2026 08:07

christmas usually
or on holiday

MapleOakPine · 11/01/2026 08:07

We do, but not very often. We enjoy it but we're all busy with school, jobs, hobbies etc so it would usually only happen around Christmas or in the summer holidays, DC are late teens btw.

Pepperedpickles · 11/01/2026 08:07

I absolutely hate board games. Can’t stand them. Dh loves them. So at Christmas etc I make an effort to join in. It’s become a family tradition to play monopoly on Christmas Eve (dc are older now, 13 and 22) but despite putting on a good front I feel so bored. I think we’re all different but really not my thing at all!

tilypu · 11/01/2026 08:08

Mine are adults and not living with me any more, and it's still one of our favourite ways to spend time together

InfoSecInTheCity · 11/01/2026 08:10

We have lots of board games because DH and DD love them. I hate them but always join in for a little while. They know I don’t enjoy it though so when I say I’m done they accept that and continue without me.

Bikergran · 11/01/2026 08:10

Not for about 30 years now.

Bimmering · 11/01/2026 08:10

Yes, we play them 3-4 times a week.

Have some quick card games, big strategic ones and ones in between

Find better games! Monopoly is, imo, one of the worst! There are many games that are so much more fun to play.

SwishMyCape · 11/01/2026 08:10

In our house it's the other way around @Pepperedpickles DH doesn't enjoy them much but makes an effort for the children & I. We tend to play them on holidays and at Christmas. Sometimes on a weekend. He also recognises the value of doing something recreational together.

Ablondiebutagoody · 11/01/2026 08:10

DS11 loves playing board and card games, often old ones from my parents. Current favourites are Buccaneer, Risk and Poker.

Oh we play loads, that’s just one example. I hate them all! Dh is a proper board game nerd and used to spend his teen years playing d and d and all those sort of role play board games so I do try to join in and not be a complete fun sponge but I’d rather just watch Tv!

If you think you hate board games then it may be because of playing Monopoly! I can't understand it's enduring popularity - it's such a boring game! There are so many brilliant games out there (which you are welcome still to hate, of course! Grin)

OttersMayHaveShifted · 11/01/2026 08:12

We play them a lot! 20yo dd will still play with us when she's home from uni. 17yo ds not so keen now, but will play at Christmas or other times when we have extended family around. Dh and I havd particular games we will quite often play just the two of us at weekends or on weekday evenings if we have time. My side of the family are keen game players. Dh's not quite so much.

Moonnstarz · 11/01/2026 08:13

Agree we do as it's a good way to get my kids off screens so we will play at weekends and school holidays.
As someone else put, if you have other things you do as a family then you spend time doing that together. In winter we tend to be in more so do play more games at this time of year as less likely to go out for days out or walks.

If people can add their game recommendations too then that would also be great!

HawthornFairy · 11/01/2026 08:13

Board and cad games are a great way to enjoy each other’s company, especially in the teen years. Dungeons and dragons style stuff is good too, and jigsaws. If families aren’t doing these things together how are they actually interacting in the home in winter?

Operationtimecomingup · 11/01/2026 08:13

Being able to play cards or boardgames is one of the things I really really miss now I live alone.

One of the few things I love about Christmas are my Christmas games of Scrabble and cards and the occasional board game that we get to play when my son comes to stay for the festive period. Having a game of Scrabble on Christmas day has been a tradition for us for many years.

Figgygal · 11/01/2026 08:14

I want to play them I think they build resilience and are great for family time but cannot get kids to do it, it's painful and so wet have given up a bit.
Need to find some less traditional ones I think

SchnizelVonKrumm · 11/01/2026 08:15

We love board games! Current faves ate Labyrinth with the DC, and when it's just the adults, Scotland Yard, Sheriff of Nottingham and The Really Nasty Horse Racing Game

PembeGreyfurt · 11/01/2026 08:16

It was very normal in my family growing up - both board and card games.

BartokRules · 11/01/2026 08:17

I teach individual music lessons and asked all my students one week what their favourite board game was, they all listed more than one so I think most families do play.

EleanorReally · 11/01/2026 08:17

i hate scrabble at christmas, i think it has no place at christmas, christmas is a time of joy and laughter
we play card games or other games but any one who brings the scrabble out is asking for trouble imo, as illustrated this christmas with tears, may be hormones/alcohol were involved, but still
i like cluedo - but i think i am alone there
