To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

Well my ds are 12 and 14, and we (including dh) play card games, monopoly etc.

Hate board games, I am the least competitive person and I just couldn't give a crap if I win or lose.

There are lots of board games that are either collaborative or where it’s just about having fun rather than winning.

CoodleMoodle · 11/01/2026 09:31

We like board games a lot. We especially like creative ones like Pictionary, Six Second Scribbles and Block Party. We also like Cluedo (we have 3 different ones!) and games like Payday and Game of Life. DH and I usually play them with DD11 when DS7 isn't there, or one of us will play with her while the other does something else with DS.

DS isn't great at board games because he gets very upset about losing (DD did too but is fine now, we're getting there with DS) so we play a lot of Peaceable Kingdom games, which are all cooperative. His favourites are Outfoxed and Gnomes at Knight, but we also like Cauldron Quest and the space one. Also, over Christmas he was obsessed with charades! We've got What a Performance but that was too easy for him...

And card games we mostly play Top Trumps and Uno, we've got loads of different ones of both. Plus playing cards for Rummy, Old Maid, Go Fish etc. I prefer board games tbh but don't mind a card game occasionally.

neverbeenskiing · 11/01/2026 09:32

We always have. When the kids were little they loved snakes and ladders, dobble and operation. Current favourites are Taboo, Exploding Kittens and Cockroach Poker.

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/01/2026 09:34

My adult DC1 and I bond over boardgames. I gave them 2 new ones for Christmas and they invite their friends round to play board games. We like Scrabble, Azul, Qwirkle, Yahtzee, Sorry, Splendor and Carcasonne.

DC2 will sometimes play, but did play much more while growing up. The DCs and I spent many happy a school holiday playing board games.

ExDP generally refuses to play any games. I think it is because we played Scrabble a few times and I absolutely slaughtered him. He is a narcissist and his big thing was constantly telling me in all sorts of ways that he was more intelligent than me so losing badly at Scrabble went against his narrative.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/01/2026 09:36

No, we never did it, which for me is a relief, as I find board games/card games mind numbing.

TeenLifeMum · 11/01/2026 09:38

We have game games nights with friends and their dc plus our dc - all teens. Great fun.

sillylittlerabbit · 11/01/2026 09:39

Can’t stand them. Have tried many, gone to board game cafes where they ‘curate’ games for you - just never found anything where I’ve thought ‘that was fun’!
So I’d hate to be in a family where there was pressure to join in on a regular basis, tbh.

BootMaker · 11/01/2026 09:39

Ah @Millimat I'm pretty sure you're going to have a self-selecting set of responses here!

Yes, we play board games and cards. We love them. It's a great way of engendering togetherness.

My BIL owns one of the best and biggest game shops in the UK.

One of our game's cupboards.

To say that it is normal for families to play board games
vanillalattes · 11/01/2026 09:39

We were never a board game family - personally I find them really dull, and I've tried all sorts over the years.

Luckily DH feels the same - all we own is a very old set of Monopoly that we inherited from his parents. It's currently sat in a cupboard and has been there since we moved here!

Lafawnda · 11/01/2026 09:41

I'm trying to do this. Our family feels very disjointed now that they are all older teens.

Tried monopoly last night and it didn't go well 🤣🤣

sittingonabeach · 11/01/2026 09:42

I’m more a jigsaw, crossword, craft person. DH is a board game person and his side of family is very competitive (which in my mind takes the fun out of the game, especially when one member of his family criticises you for the choice you made eg buying property in Monopoly). I quite like team board games, so I don’t feel picked on or constantly don’t come last! There was a memorable flight to Australia many years ago when I bought a variety of travel board games and lost every single one to DH including snakes and ladders. I read a book on the return flight!

Happy to play collaborative games, but will sit out and do craft if DH and extended family get the Monopoly board out

Lafawnda · 11/01/2026 09:43

Whilst the board gamers are congregated acan anyone recommend any games for older teens/young adults.

We currently have monopoly, pokemon monopoly, oh my pigeon. Scrabble, jenga and chicken and hotdog (last is unplayed so far)

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/01/2026 09:44

We played them a lot when dd was younger although not so much now she’s an older teen. I like cluedo and othello. My dd is pretty decent at chess.

AngelinaFibres · 11/01/2026 09:48

Pepperedpickles · 11/01/2026 08:07

I absolutely hate board games. Can’t stand them. Dh loves them. So at Christmas etc I make an effort to join in. It’s become a family tradition to play monopoly on Christmas Eve (dc are older now, 13 and 22) but despite putting on a good front I feel so bored. I think we’re all different but really not my thing at all!

I hate board games unless I'm playing them with my very small grandsons. I put families who constantly play board games in the same bucket of contempt as people who describe themselves as outdoorsy and make a huge thing about always cooking from scratch. You are 'performing' your John Lewis lifestyle , allow yourself to relax a bit. Reminds me often of the family in the cafe in Waitrose talking to their elderly neighbours. Mum went on and on and on about music lessons and sports triumphs blah blah. After the neighbours left the 9 year old boy with her did a big sigh and said " God, can we go to McDonald's now pleeeeese'. Presumably the bribe was that , if Giles and Tilly behaved 'properly' they'd get to go to the greasy wonderland of the golden arches.

UniquePinkSwan · 11/01/2026 09:49

Thankfully, we all hate board games

BootMaker · 11/01/2026 09:41

Why do find them dull?

Games are fun!

They're really not fun to me - I always find myself with a headache afterwards. I think it's because I'm autistic and struggle a lot with sensory overload, and I find it really difficult to concentrate on multiple different things at once (rules, other people talking, deciding what to do).

I would rather do something on my own and at my own pace.

gamerchick · 11/01/2026 09:53

We like a game of monopoly. It gets a bit dicy sometimes as teen used to be a board flipper. But we like a board game on occasion. Me and pals play board games occasionally as well when I go up.

I don't actually know many people personally who do though. It's a shame, kids usually enjoy them once they know how to play it.

Hedjwitch · 11/01/2026 09:53

Not really into board games here. We very very occasionally play Catan ( adult dcs) but that's about it.
We will do quizzes or crosswords at Christmas.

Wiltedgeranium · 11/01/2026 09:54

We mainly played them at winter. Haven't done any this year though, but that's my fault really. If I've got a spare couple of hours, I want to be by myself, reading. I know I should continue the tradition, but to be fair, no one is clamouring to play.

Fernsrus · 11/01/2026 09:54

It’s not important either way. What’s important is that you play with your children.

2old4thispoo · 11/01/2026 09:57

I think it's possibly a cultural thing as mu family never played board games and only adults played cards.

I rarely played board games with my dc when they were growing up. There were no phones and the only screen was 1 TV in the living room.

mushypeas94 · 11/01/2026 09:57

We love card games and board games! One DD8. We play a lot at Christmas and all the time on summer holidays. Favourite memory from our Italian holiday last year is playing card game during al fresco dinners. Favourites are UNO, Cluedo, Monopoly, Exploding kittens and Rat a tat Cat. Can’t wait until DD is older and we can try Carcassonne, Catan etc. Our New Year’s resolution is to play on Sunday afternoons too. It’s a great way to engage the whole family without resorting to screens. I think it will become even more important when DD enters the teenage years.

BootMaker · 11/01/2026 09:58

Ah! Maybe the fact my BIL owns the best games shop in the UK means we play lots of games. Although I always played board games, girl to woman.

And my children do too!

Mebbe a genetic thing...

My husband is a cards man.

My parents played Majong, poker and whist and taught me as a child, and played with their friends.

I dunno, maybe it's a 'family thing' that's in the blood.

I've taken many men down at games. They hate it. Particularly poker.
