To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

Me, my husband and 4 year old regularly have games night and we even had one last night! We played air hockey, pool, table football and bingo and it got very competitive 😂 I’m hoping it is something we do for years to come!

None of those are board games.

newmenewwhatever · 11/01/2026 10:19

My children are adults now but we always played board games.
me an dp always play scrabble or uno or something in a Saturday night listening to radio 2

tilypu · 11/01/2026 08:08

Mine are adults and not living with me any more, and it's still one of our favourite ways to spend time together

Me too.

it’s more fun as they get older - I’ll admit some of the games the played as small DC were mind numbing.

we play lots of trivia games with including trivial pursuit. I like cluedo and occasionally monopoly.

My kids are too little but i’m really excited to teach them. Attempting snakes and ladders with my 5 year old as a start.

Loads of fantastic games aimed at little children by Orchard Games @Iocanepowder I must have played shopping list 100s of times when my DC were preschool age - loved that game!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/01/2026 10:20

We’ve never played board games at home, in fact, we don’t have any! But in my defence, we’re a family of 2, so I can’t see how many board game would work with that few people anyway.

I have been at other people’s houses when the games were brought out and thought it was a bit weird and rude. I didn’t realise so many people were into games. I thought the games had been brought out because the hosts were bored with our company. So I left soon after.

I hate board games unless I'm playing them with my very small grandsons. I put families who constantly play board games in the same bucket of contempt as people who describe themselves as outdoorsy and make a huge thing about always cooking from scratch. You are 'performing' your John Lewis lifestyle , allow yourself to relax a bit. Reminds me often of the family in the cafe in Waitrose talking to their elderly neighbours. Mum went on and on and on about music lessons and sports triumphs blah blah. After the neighbours left the 9 year old boy with her did a big sigh and said " God, can we go to McDonald's now pleeeeese'. Presumably the bribe was that , if Giles and Tilly behaved 'properly' they'd get to go to the greasy wonderland of the golden arches.

Blimey, that’s a bit strong. My 4 kids are in their 30s and when we get together we ‘relax’ by playing board games. I genuinely think one of the reasons we all get along so well is because we have always played board games. It’s fun, we talk and laugh together and we aren’t being distracted by our phones or whatever. I can’t see any negatives to it.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 11/01/2026 10:22

Yes, we play board / card games regularly as a family (me, DH and DC 13 & 11). It's a lovely way to spend time together (and away from screens!).

mondaytosunday · 11/01/2026 10:22

Yes we play when away. Scrabble is a favourite. My DD is learning bridge, I play a bit but you need to know what you are doing!

SALaw · 11/01/2026 10:22

Yes lots of board games and cards. Kids now mid teens and still enjoy it. Also often play with Grandparents.

MikeRafone · 11/01/2026 10:23

My dds used to play board games and an adult would join in, this could be draughts, monopoly or card games. Particularly at weekends and the game would be left up until the following weekend if not finished

we also played uni a lit and boogle a word game, shut the box, with foreign students we would host for 3-6 months. We’d eat dinner at the table and then play these games afterwards. It would help integrate the student into family life and the word game helped with their language skills.

BunnyLake · 11/01/2026 10:24

As a kid we played board games and I did the same with my kids. Not Monopoly though, we all hated that, goes on too long. Trivial Pursuit was a favourite as everyone likes to think they’re clever 😁

FancyCatSlave · 11/01/2026 10:25

Not regularly. DD is only 6 and doesn’t have the attention span for long. She doesn’t mind them in short bursts but it’s not a weekly thing. We do more of the hungry hippos, guess who or marble run types of games but usually only in the school hols.

Our preferred activity is lego though - DD and I like to listen to an audiobook whilst doing lego builds or playmobil.

Normal weekends we still have playdates so usually busy enough as it is!

melissasummerfield · 11/01/2026 10:26

we have an incredible amount of board games - just had to put more shelves up to accommodate them 🤣

like previous posters have mentioned, it make sure our tweeny / teeny kids all take a break from phones and screens etc.. we also take a couple of holidays to play in the evening.

i must say i do buy a lot of short form games - big potato games and exploding kittens are two great game manufacturers.

There are lots and lots of good games for two if you think you might like like them. Try Qwinto. All you need is three coloured dice and you can download a scorecard onto your phone or tablet. You don’t need to buy the actual game.
Do you enjoy puzzles at all?

There is no rule saying people have to play board games though.

minipie · 11/01/2026 10:26

I wish I liked them. DH and DDs do.

We have lots, mostly bought by me as I know the others like them, but I just don’t enjoy them.

For me it feels like I’m trapped at the table so I can’t get on with jobs, but I’m also unable to have a conversation because everyone is focusing on the game.

And they are so boring - they are 10% skill and 90% luck in what cards you get.

I don’t mind the trivia type of games where you can usually have a conversation around the answers.

DancingLions · 11/01/2026 10:30

i’ve always enjoyed board games. When I was a kid, no one in my family liked them except my beloved grandma. I have happy memories of me and her playing board games when I’d go and stay with her.

With my own DC, I’ve always had a selection of games in the house. They’re both adults now but we’ll still regularly get a game out and play. The choice nowadays is amazing.

But then all of us hate sitting on our phones. DS does spend a lot of time on his PC but me and DD have spent our time off doing things like embroidery, knitting and jigsaws! We’re probably quite old fashioned in a way.

NeedyLimeMember · 11/01/2026 10:30

I don't think it's a normal thing these days, but I definitely wish it was. We sometimes do with my family, but my husband's side of the family don't play games, preferring to sit round and talk about the same shallow sh*t and rehashing the same stories over and over. I find it really tiresome.

havingoneofthosedays · 11/01/2026 10:31

Only on MN, it's so twee 🤢

Jeska7 · 11/01/2026 10:31

We do. Would like to play them more though. It gets us off our phones! We always take uno, dobble or some other small game with us when we go out for the day and often play them whilst in a cafe or pub waiting for food. We take games on holiday with us too and have a selection of board games at home.

Gosh 😁 that’s a lot of takeway from a few board games.

Dahlings skiing . Totes fabulous .

C'mon now!

I don't think you're as terrible as you're telling us.

I think, a little kernel, deep inside you actually wants to do these things.

It's ok to open yourself up to dickheadry.

(PS, I enjoy the occasional McDonald's, no shame, we're all human).

Summerunlover · 11/01/2026 10:34

I find them so boring, I can’t stand them. But am forced to do it yearly.

Clefable · 11/01/2026 10:36

I love board games! DD1 is now an age (6)?where she’s able to start playing child versions of proper ones, and DD2 (3.5) is able to play some very child friendly ones (Orchard Games and some others).

When BIL and SIL visit that’s often what we do once kids are in bed as they love board games too!

DH and I like the EXIT escape room games too.

rickyrickygrimes · 11/01/2026 10:36

LilyCanna · 11/01/2026 10:04

There are several posts on here where people say they find board games boring and mention Monopoly. Monopoly is the WORST game, it takes ages and once someone gets ahead, you’re just waiting (tediously) for them to win. It’s like saying you don’t like reading when someone’s been getting you to lie in bed in the evening reading a car instruction manual.

Obviously we’re all different - I love gardening, many of my friends enjoy running, which baffles me. But please don’t make your final judgement on board games based on Monopoly, when there are hundreds of better games out there of all different types!

Agreed. My British experience of board games began and ended with monopoly (the board version) and trivial pursuits - both are rubbish compared to the games that are available. Monopoly and the ensuing fights completely put me off the idea, plus it’s slow and complicated. Monopoly Deal is a million times better.

C152 · 11/01/2026 10:37

We played board games when I was a child and I play board games and card games with DS. It's a good way to spend time together and for children to learn without realising that's what's happening.
