To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

We do, but my 14 year old avoids it because he gets pissed off when he doesn’t win!!!

Iocanepowder · 11/01/2026 09:59

My kids are too little but i’m really excited to teach them. Attempting snakes and ladders with my 5 year old as a start.

YouBelongWithMe · 11/01/2026 09:59

We play more at Christmas time but Monopoly is probably pulled out once a fortnight all year. Kids are 18, 16 and 14, and this has been established for about 12 years now.

MsWilmottsGhost · 11/01/2026 10:00

DHs family love board games and have loads of them, at least 1 will always come out at every family get together. Christmas etc is a whole day of various games.

In contrast, my own family mostly did abuse and neglect, so board games were very rare, and what I do remember is crying a lot.

So DH loves them and I don't.

When he suggests board games for fun I physically cringe and feel absolute horror and dread. They are not my idea of fun. Despite this, I usually join in, by partnering one of the kids or elderly family members, then I don't have to try to follow the rules, and I can relax with the wine and offer occasional "help" or roll the dice (when prompted) 😂

I do like Scrabble. Cos I win.

Cat1504 · 11/01/2026 10:00

I have 3 GD….they do not play them at home….we have a good few they play when they are at our home ( several times a week)….parents have Dobble and playing cards and uno which they take on holidays or to meals out

EverythingGolden · 11/01/2026 10:01

We do with teen dd but more likely at Christmas or on holiday, especially camping.

Kirbert2 · 11/01/2026 10:03

We didn't much except for Christmas, holidays etc until my son ended up in hospital for 10 months and it became a way to try and pass the time and now we do it a bit more regularly when we have the time.

My son discovered Exploding Kittens in hospital and now it is one of our favourite card games to play together.

I’m more a jigsaw, crossword, craft person. DH is a board game person and his side of family is very competitive (which in my mind takes the fun out of the game, especially when one member of his family criticises you for the choice you made eg buying property in Monopoly). I quite like team board games, so I don’t feel picked on or constantly don’t come last! There was a memorable flight to Australia many years ago when I bought a variety of travel board games and lost every single one to DH including snakes and ladders. I read a book on the return flight!

Happy to play collaborative games, but will sit out and do craft if DH and extended family get the Monopoly board out

There are several posts on here where people say they find board games boring and mention Monopoly. Monopoly is the WORST game, it takes ages and once someone gets ahead, you’re just waiting (tediously) for them to win. It’s like saying you don’t like reading when someone’s been getting you to lie in bed in the evening reading a car instruction manual.

Obviously we’re all different - I love gardening, many of my friends enjoy running, which baffles me. But please don’t make your final judgement on board games based on Monopoly, when there are hundreds of better games out there of all different types!

I hate board games unless I'm playing them with my very small grandsons. I put families who constantly play board games in the same bucket of contempt as people who describe themselves as outdoorsy and make a huge thing about always cooking from scratch. You are 'performing' your John Lewis lifestyle , allow yourself to relax a bit. Reminds me often of the family in the cafe in Waitrose talking to their elderly neighbours. Mum went on and on and on about music lessons and sports triumphs blah blah. After the neighbours left the 9 year old boy with her did a big sigh and said " God, can we go to McDonald's now pleeeeese'. Presumably the bribe was that , if Giles and Tilly behaved 'properly' they'd get to go to the greasy wonderland of the golden arches.

This actually made me LOL.

You 'hate' wholesome people?

I cook from scratch every day because it tastes better.

We climb, ski, sail, fence , hike, and play board games.

You have contempt for us?I

I don't even notice you . .

I think they are a generally good thing to do with little kids, and can teach them to enjoy participating even when not winning. Which is why DHs family love them, and so do our DC.

You need to make sure they aren't an opportunity for others to gloat and tease and be nasty. Which is why I hate them.

Be like DHs family..❤️

Lazychains · 11/01/2026 10:07

We have probably around 60 board games/ card games. It's a key way we spend time together as a family

BoudiccaRuled · 11/01/2026 10:09

The kids are now 18 and 15 and it's still one of our favourite activities as a family. That, skiing, climbing hills for sunrise, camping and watching old stuff like Fawlty Towers, Creature Comforts and 80s films when the weather is awful.
None of us have, or have ever had, TVs in our rooms. Weekends were always outside rather than soft play etc. I think the "wholesome pursuits" 🤢🤮 lifestyle, whilst vomit-inducing when referred to/boasted about on social media, breeds happiness in a family and strengthens bonds. When we are no longer here, the kids will have happy memories to talk about together.

I absolutely agree with you and i love them myself. Sadly my husband is the same as yours.

You could try some collaborative games.

JLou08 · 11/01/2026 10:11

Same in my house. I love board games, DH does not. I used to play them with the DC but once they got to around 10 they stopped, declaring them as boring.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 11/01/2026 10:11

We did play them when the kids were little but not so much now, occasionally at Christmas and that's it. It's a perfectly normal hobby but not something "everyone" does by any means, particularly not when you have older children or adult offspring.

I enjoys some like Monopoly, Cluedo, Scrabble, Articulate and Trivial Pursuit but some of the more complex and involved ones I could absolutely not be arsed with.

‘Bucket of contempt’ for playing board games, enjoying nature and getting outside or taking time to eat well!? It might not be your bag @AngelinaFibres but I think you are bizarre for judging people so harshly for looking after their minds & bodies!

We very occasionally plays games now DC are teens & the rest of the time screens dominate!

We will play:
Herd Mentality
Soundalicious
Cluedo
or pack of cards for pontoon
exploding kittens
have bought a new version of Uno No Mercy but not tried it yet

Newyearnewmewoooop · 11/01/2026 10:13

Family of 5, have never played board games!

BeeDavis · 11/01/2026 10:14

Me, my husband and 4 year old regularly have games night and we even had one last night! We played air hockey, pool, table football and bingo and it got very competitive 😂 I’m hoping it is something we do for years to come!

ThatJadeLion · 11/01/2026 10:16

My mum hated board games growing up. She only ever played snap growing up as it was short. She still is a wonderful mum!! Not everyone likes them and I don't think they should be forced onto someone!!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 11/01/2026 10:17

I cook from scratch and also have takeaways and go to McDonalds. @AngelinaFibres Try to get to know more people in real life, stop assuming people are cardboard cut-out stereotypes and do try and deal with the green-eyed monster and that massive chip on your shoulder.

MasterBeth · 11/01/2026 10:17

BootMaker · 11/01/2026 09:41

Why do find them dull?

Games are fun!

Games are only fun if you like games.

I don't particularly like board games.

I would rather have a conversation.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 11/01/2026 10:17

My parents never played any board games with me when I was a child. I would get given games occasionally for Christmas presents but the only time they'd get played was in school holidays, where every Friday morning I went to see my nan and grandad and they'd play them with me. I suspect it's as a result of this that I don't like board games.

Luckyingame · 11/01/2026 10:18

As you are interested in opinions, I only played board games as a child with my grandmother.
As an adult, I'd never want to spend my time like this (no children) and don't know any other adult who would enjoy this.
Most of them retreat to be by themselves for any time they can grab, or to be on their phones.
Which is perfectly alright by me (47 yo), since
I tend to be the same.
