To say that it is normal for families to play board games

Am I delusional to think that families do this? DH hates playing board or card games and this is influencing my DCs opinions. I’m not on about when children are little and it’s about learning rules and turn taking, I’m on about just as a pastime to do as a family activity.
it’s a lighthearted question but I’m intrigued as to how many of you out there play board and card games at home.

We do but normally only on holiday or waiting for food at a restaurant. 2x Adult DS

Growing up I loathed having to play board games. My parents and brothers insisted. Endless Monopoly and Scrabble. Hated it.

I wasn't keen on them when the kids were young either. But there are so many good games now that aren't lengthy and tedious.

Te hgames I can remember off the top of my head are Flip 7, Rummikub, Ticket To Ride, Just One, King of Tokyo, Catan, Carcassonne, Seven Wonders, Wingspan, Horrified, Villainous, escape room games, Munchkin, Exploding Kittens, Azul, Linkee, Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Blockbuster, Deep Regrets, Jaws, Mysterium, Trolley Problem, Taskmaster...

I like the quick play and go like Flip 7 and Just One, DP and older kids like the complicated ones but we all have a good time with games days now.

My son and daughter-in-law have three teenage children and own loads of board games which we join in with when we visit

Personally hated board games growing up as it was always just me and my mother. She seemed really uninterested and would even fall asleep during Xmas attempts at board games. Now I have my own dc I actively make an effort to do board games with him. It can feel odd at times maybe he is also dealing with something from his childhood

‘Bucket of contempt’ for playing board games, enjoying nature and getting outside or taking time to eat well!? It might not be your bag @AngelinaFibres but I think you are bizarre for judging people so harshly for looking after their minds & bodies!

We very occasionally plays games now DC are teens & the rest of the time screens dominate!

We will play:
Herd Mentality
Soundalicious
Cluedo
or pack of cards for pontoon
exploding kittens
have bought a new version of Uno No Mercy but not tried it yet

Bucket of Contempt sounds like a board game concept Grin

McP13 · 11/01/2026 19:16

We love a board game.. always buy a new one at Christmas. We love a wet Sunday playing simple ones like dobble, dominoes or Yahtzee or playing longer ones likes cludeo or outsmarted..

I absolutely hate board games. Can’t stand them. Dh loves them. So at Christmas etc I make an effort to join in. It’s become a family tradition to play monopoly on Christmas Eve (dc are older now, 13 and 22) but despite putting on a good front I feel so bored. I think we’re all different but really not my thing at all!

I hear you. Absolutely loath board games (I think it’s years of enforced family “fun” growing up) I make the effort at Xmas but it’s not for me and my family accept that as they ll play loads in an evening.

PeachyPeachTrees · 11/01/2026 19:30

Me, DH and both DS love board games and card games. We try to play every weekend. More on holiday and at Christmas.
I hate Monopoly, Trival pursuits and other famous games similar. There is so much cool stuff out there! Start with Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Qwirkle, Ticket to ride or Wingspan.

HoorayHattie · 11/01/2026 19:35

We have regular game nights . . . Raccoon Tycoon is the current favourite but we also enjoy Wingspan, Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Trekking the World, Llamaland, Barenpark, Splendor, Azul & Takenoko. We also have Forbidden Island/Dessert/Jungle which are great fun as they are co-operative games where you all work together as a team to win

NotMeAtAll · 11/01/2026 19:50

My friends play Trivial Pursuit when there are big family gatherings. Apart from playing it there a couple of times I haven't played a board game since I was a child.

I love chess, but it's easier to find a good match online.

Catladywithoutacat · 11/01/2026 19:50

Our family loves a board game and a card game. When the kids were younger, we played so many.

Nowadays, as kids are older (any busy ), cards are only played nightly on holiday and Monopoly always comes out at Christmas - we took it to Norway with us!

Occasionally throughout the year, if we feel we haven’t had ‘family time’ or if one of the kids is a bit low, then we’ll announce ‘take-out’ and ‘board-game’ night.

As soon as the kids go to GP, scrabble and chess comes out!

geekygardener · 11/01/2026 20:16

Yes we play lots with dc who are 13 and 8. We also play just me and dh if we have enough energy once dc are in bed. There is no set schedule like holidays or Xmas, it’s just when dc ask or one of us feels like it. I’d say it’s almost weekly. We all enjoy it. We get new games when we can and always for birthdays and Xmas. My sister is brilliant at buying the dc new games we haven’t played before. We have always enjoyed the ones she has given.

I never had or played board games as a child. Had very little interaction with my parents so it’s important to me that we do things like this and have that positive connection and interaction as a family. We do also do lots of other things together, like art projects or something. I find board games are an easy way to get us all together without too much thinking about what to do.

One of my dc really struggled with losing and resilience when she was little, she would get very angry and cry and would accuse us of cheating. Very dramatic. We stuck with it and she’s fine now, I really think board games do teach dc lots of different skills and build resilience.

Are you trapped in an Enid Blyton novel?

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 11/01/2026 20:23

It was normal growing up, but now it's just DH and I. I'd like to play with just us two but haven't yet.
We play at Christmas when we have guests and enjoy it.

Should try it really. I have fond memories of playing with my DF.

Find better games! Monopoly is, imo, one of the worst! There are many games that are so much more fun to play.

Yes to this.

It's not quite a board game, but my family all loved Blokus. We also had a game called Izzi which was a visual game (no trotting your game piece around the board). That one could be played by just one player too. We mostly played Scrabble.

PurpleYarnivore · 11/01/2026 20:31

I loathe board games , I think from being forced to play endless Monopoly as a child . My sister loves them and her family play a game every Friday before dinner with a glass of wine . If I’m staying with her I just politely decline and enjoy just the wine !

Fridgemanageress · 11/01/2026 20:37

I love frustration/ludo, hungry hippos, they are quick, loud and laughter driven.

monopoly I’m not keen on.

chess and droughts two of the kids like, and Atari is very popular too.

obviously there are other games, but in the dining room that’s what’s in there

Bleachedjeans · 11/01/2026 20:40

My son and DIL play board games with DC age 6 and 4 frequently. ‘Windy Knickers’ is the current favourite 🤣

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 11/01/2026 20:44

Yeah we play them weekly, kids 8, 6 & 4. Youngest is still quite annoying with them 🤣 but she is a dab hand at guess who now.

‘Does your character have a hat? My character has a hat too!’ 🤔

DonnaBanana · 11/01/2026 20:45

It’a no more or less normal than it is to go camping, play the piano together or go metal detecting. Lots of families do these things and many don’t and it’s fine either way. Playing board games is not at the universal level of eating together or something.

JustMeAndTheFish · 11/01/2026 20:46

I’m not a massive fan but my adult kids and partners all play regularly ; in fact my daughter and her partner bought each other the same game for Christmas.
I bought us all a new game called “Ransome Notes” at Christmas which was great and went down very well

Fizbosshoes · 11/01/2026 20:48

We had a hilarious and competitive game of scattegories with extended family, over xmas. We played in teams (participants ages 16-65)
