To never have cleaned my dishwasher

Is it true you're supposed to do it monthly???

You need to take out, empty and rinse the filter at the bottom regularly. If you scrape the plates first there will be relatively little trapped there but old food needs cleaning out. Also check the spinning arms from time to time in case they get clogged up. If the plates and glasses start to look gritty or not fully clean it is time to clean!

Windywuss · 09/01/2026 22:13

I can't believe this is how I enjoy Friday night aged 51 🤣

Redcabbagefarts · 09/01/2026 22:14

Yes I normally get the filter out, take it apart and scrub it, then run an intense empty cycle. Probably do this every 3 or 4 weeks when I notice things are starting to get a bit rank.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 09/01/2026 22:14

I do find removing sweetcorn from the holes in the spinners with tweezers weirdly satisfying. I have not a clue how sweetcorn gets in there as I scrape it all into the food bin first but it always does.

Bumbleebeetree · 09/01/2026 22:15

I clean the filter weekly and it's absolutely disgusting 🤮 probably because we don't rinse the plates properly!

MNLurker1345 · 09/01/2026 22:16

You do frequently take out the middle filter and wash? Add salt and Rinse aid?

estrogone · 09/01/2026 22:18

Oooooh dishwasher sporner. Yay.

I wash the filter out weekly and put a cleaner solution through monthly.

Mine (AEG) tells me when it needs a clean. I dismantle the wings and clean the filter and then run a special self cleaning wash with dishwasher cleaner. About every 6 weeks but we aren't heavy users. It really needs it - the muck that comes out! And I use a bleach spray around the edges of the machine door and base. It gets filthy.

My Bosch, which is fairly new, also tells me when I need to run a special machine care cycle. It has its own button. I have to use dishwasher cleaner for this cycle. I usually run my dishwasher a couple of times a day and the machine care light comes on about every 2 weeks. I clean the filter after this.

Pavementworrier · 09/01/2026 22:12

How about I just remove the filter and throw it away?

Not possible, its part of the machine.

Happyjoe · 09/01/2026 22:21

WhatFlavourIsIt · 09/01/2026 21:37

Oh you're in for a treat when you pull out the filter. When I go to clean a new clients house it's one of the 1st things I do. I make sure I'm alone because I have a strong stomach for most things out a dishwasher filter is the only thing apart from cat puke that will have me retching over the sink.

This worries me! Will be moving into a home with someone else's inbuilt dishwasher... that's not been used in over a year (person died). I really hope can get a replacement because I am not sure I can stomach cleaning it...and it will never feel clean regardless.

mynameiscalypso · 09/01/2026 22:21

This is pretty much the old part of adulting that I do because if you leave it too long, it’s enough to make you vom. Porridge is the worst offender I find.

But if it makes you feel any better, we did buy a new washing machine partly because it was exceedingly dirty.

TY78910 · 09/01/2026 22:23

Can those of you that have been enlightened today and are going to wash your filters please check back with your experience please 😂

ChubbyPuffling · 09/01/2026 22:24

Oh, my, word...

Not just the filter or the spray arms, or the door seals...

Take a look at where the top rack slides forwards to be loaded... the 2 arms that it slides on... ewwwww...

A cleaning schedule 😂😂😂 meanwhile most of us just running on pure vibes

although this thread would actually prove that most of us clean our dishwashers Grin

billybear · 09/01/2026 22:27

fill up the salt on mine as well. question do people clean out their washer and tumble dryer i do mine about every other month write on calendar when i last did it,i run a dishwasher cleaner through every few months and clean out the filter

DustyMaiden · 09/01/2026 22:28

Clean filters remove arms, clean door seals . Clean the rest with lemon juice, run on empty. Takes 5 minutes

CautiousLurker2 · 09/01/2026 22:28

I do it when I remember - get a finish dishwasher cleaner thingy and run the machine on empty. Maybe twice a year? Supposedly prolongs the life of the machine (breaks down grease and limescale in the machine. Our dishwashers are 11 years old, according to a facebook memory we got a few weeks ago, but look and work as new, so am assuming it’s worth the effort. Just ordered some finish thingies now, prompted by this post 🙏

PonkyPonky · 09/01/2026 22:32

I can’t believe people don’t know where the filter is or that you’re supposed to clean it. Surely this is the basics of being a dishwasher owner. Filter is easy to clean but if you’ve literally never done it, it will be stomach churning. Also need hot water and a scrubby brush to go along the bottom at the front as gross stuff gets stuck there too. Once you’ve done all that just run it with a cleaner it

HostaCentral · 09/01/2026 22:35

Adding salt also helps keep it clean. My Bosch is 22 years old ..... I have even bought a new filter on Espares as the old one disintegrated.... Is your mind blown OP?

I also got a new cutlery basket and new drawers as they were getting rusty...Machine still going strong though. Probably because it gets cleaned regularly... ..

TY78910 · 09/01/2026 21:49

No, you still need to open the filter and give that a scrub. Nothing will dissolve what’s in there it needs to be ‘picked off’. I can only describe it as the equivalent of if you squeezed out all the juice out of an orange and was left with the white stringy bits - that’s the consistency. I use an Ikea kitchen brush just to scrub it off under water.

Also - would it blow your mind if I told you you’re supposed to unscrew the wing things as well and scrub around the holes? That also builds up the same stuff as around your filter!

I take it out, and run it through the dishwasher when I’m cleaning it. Works fine.

Tumble dryer... lint filter when I use it, and hoover out the vent pipe every month or so.

Washing machine... door seals every time it has been used, drawer every week, filter every week. Run cleaning program once a week to reduce soap build up

Dishwasher... door seal wiped off every time it is used, filter every week , spray spinners and slidey out arms every month . Run cleaning program once a month as directed in the manual

Can I add microwave...? Fridge...? Oven...? Airfryer...?

AvocadoJam · 09/01/2026 22:39

My filter gets gunge on it and needs a good clean every fortnight... am I doing something wrong?!

This! As PPs have said, we are not Mrs Hinch, but these items do need regular cleaning.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/01/2026 22:40

I unscrew the filter thingie in the base every Thursday or Friday and pull the two bits apart to clean then .
On the first of the month I run the WM and the DW with a cleaning tablet on a hot wash .
The rinse aid warning light shows that it needs a top up . I do the salt every month or so , we're in a hard water area.
Clean the side metal bits where the racks slide out with a spray and brush

I am a TOTAL slattern but I'm surprised some of you vipers don't do this ! Maybe you have soft water ?

KeenGreen · 09/01/2026 22:42

I had no idea! Just told DH about the filter thingy and he said yeah I do clean that all the time! Phew and thank goodness for DH!
