Is it true you're supposed to do it monthly???

@Pavementworrier
I'm literally crying at your responses. So I think I live in a fairly clean home….. I have a water softener so it cuts down on cleaning by at least 75%. I hoover when carpets show sock fluff (all the fucking time as our carpets are off white and socks black) I sweep hard floors regularly as every bloody person in this house shed dirt like an earth worm. I have a dishwasher so it cuts don’t have to wash dishes …….. but what I do do which will be absolutely frowned soon is when the filter bits need cleaned (and the shower filters) I take them all out and …… put them on the top rack of the dishwasher 🫣
all come out so clean 😂

And no, it's not OK to scrub it with the lavatory brush.

Or to put your lavatory brush in the dishwasher
I didn't even know this was a thing till I read it on MN

For clarity , I do have toilet brushes but those silicone ones and when they need a clean I put them in the loo overnight with the cleaning table .
And have my adult son grumble "Mother I went to the loo in the night and it was dark , that could've been nasty. How would you explain that in A&E?"

Houseofteenbots · 11/01/2026 18:44

Yes you are! And you're supposed to clean washing machines monthly aswell . I recommend wpro this one product can be used on both

I do clean out the filter and mesh bit from time to time. Usually when it stops cleaning so well. It can get a bit grim

Or when it’s full of peas and sweetcorn 🤣

hoxtonbabe · 11/01/2026 18:58

I’ve cleaned my dishwasher filters and let it run with Finish dishwasher cleaner as long as I can remember, probably quarterly though or sooner if I can see the stuff isn’t as clean as weeks prior. I think I’ve only cleaned my current washing machine 3 times in the 8 off years I’ve had it 🤭

Setters2020 · 11/01/2026 19:00

Clean my filter once a month after I’ve put the oven shelves through for a clean, i then I manually clean the filter and then do a cycle with a dishwasher cleaning tablet together with my two dish drainer racks, my sink drain covers, my sink brushes, my empty food caddy and the microwave tray.

hmmm. I give that a try when I’m next clean my dishwasher. It actually sounds like a good idea, lol

Although given how high tech appliances are these days it may not work unless all the components in the dishwasher are locked in etc 🙄

BooBooDoodle · 11/01/2026 19:04

I clean out and clean my washing machine with a cleaner and every 2 weeks I remove the filters and wipe out the dishwasher before putting it on an intensive cycle with a cleaner in it. Gets built up with gunk. Rarely we use it on the hottest water setting so it’s good practice to run an intensive cycle with a cleaning agent.

TrixieFatell · 11/01/2026 19:09

Weekly the filter gets cleaned in hot soapy water (it gets emptied and rinsed more than that).

Monthly I clean the doors and put bicarb and vinegar in it and put it on a short wash.

Every few months I take off the rotating things and clean those, and put a dishwasher cleaner on a intensive load

PeachyPeachTrees · 11/01/2026 19:35

I take the filter out of the bottom and clean it once every 1-3 months. I do an empty wash with a dishwasher cleaner thingy once a year.

bloodredfeaturewall · 11/01/2026 20:25

oh god, what some of you are doing sounds exhausting!
a dishwasher is supposed to make chores easier - not add to them.

Bleachedjeans · 11/01/2026 20:36

I clean my washing machine and dishwasher once a month. No big deal. Takes 2 minutes.
Recently, we were at my stepson and step DIL house. I took a couple of pots into the kitchen and she said ‘Oh just stick them
in the dishwasher ’
I opened the door and it was fucking FILTHY! Bits of food, black slime… yuk. How could they think that their dishes were being cleaned? 🤮 but she is a bit of a dirty cow 🤣🤣🤣

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 20:39

Yes and the washing machine. The washing machine lets me know when it needs a drum clean. I can’t stand a smelly washing machines with black around the rubber.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 11/01/2026 21:32

We (ok mostly DP) clean the filter probably once a week, then either get one of the dishwasher cleaners and run on an empty cycle or manually clean it and then run on an empty cycle monthly ish. We use ours a lot though and it does seem to stop cleaning as well after a while 🤷‍♀️

OneFunnyPearlTurtle · 11/01/2026 22:54

I clean mine every month. I take the spray arms off and rinse them through and check they’re not clogged, then I take the filter out and remove any debris and wash it with washing up liquid as it gets slimy, wipe down the door seals, then I run it on the hottest cycle with a dishwasher tab. I also run a cleaning cycle on the washing machine every month. I also try and vacuum the fluff catcher out n the tumble dryer regularly too as one of our old tumble dryers nearly caught fire years ago from a fluff build up

Dont they both live in the house? Surely he could clean the dishwasher too?

Debtdolly · 12/01/2026 00:10

It’s on my to do list for this week actually. I also take out the racks/trays whatever you call them and scrub rounds the edges. You wouldn’t believe the amount of grime that accumulates around them, vile!
I don’t do it monthly though, just whenever glasses are starting to come out looking a bit yuck,

Piratesue · 12/01/2026 02:23

I use a turkey baster and then wipe it out and spray with antibac

Extraenergyneeded · 11/01/2026 17:55

How about the shower drain?
Don’t forget that!!!!

Agree. We've got walk in shower, drain same level as tiles. I do this once a month or build up is disgusting.

connie26 · 12/01/2026 06:34

I do mine every couple of weeks as we use it a lot. Filter gets scrubbed and I boil the kettle and run hot water around the bottom of the door - I find this bit gets particularly slimy, so I use a toothbrush to clean it.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 12/01/2026 07:06

My dishwasher is on the WiFi so she sends me little messages letting me know what she needs. I just do as I’m told 😂 and the washing machine also benefits as I’ll do her a deep clean cycle etc alongside the dishwasher.

BIossomtoes · 12/01/2026 07:53

She?!

Oh dear

Hate to break it to you but I'm a terrible housewife who doesn't wash her skirting boards or anything. And worse.

Even I clean out the dishwasher filters every few weeks months (and thought I was being disgusting for not doing it more often).

How are your dishwashers still functioning and not leaving grime on the crockery if you aren't doing this!?

Are you the same people who keep having to replace vacuums because they lose suction (but it's actually because you haven't cleaned the filters?)

Genuinely the first time I've felt smug on mumsnet. I'm usually the dirty scratter doing it wrong by everyone else's standards.

This calls for a (clean) glass of wine!

This is me too! I'm not the cleanest (ie skirting boards) but I do give my dishwasher a clean every so often. I don't use the cleaner though, I just put it on an empty cycle with a tablet.

If you don't clean your dishwasher grease and food residues build up which can cause the cleaning cycle to fail, leaving you with unclean crockery and utensils. Also, it will shorten the life of your dishwasher, causing parts to fail, which can be expensive to replace.
Plus, it will save a small fortune on all those products the manufacturers are advertising that spray on to clean your dishes before you actually switch the dishwasher on.
The dishwasher smells if not cleaned out.
