Is it true you're supposed to do it monthly???

Your spray arms may need rinsing out.

I tried this, although they didn't seem visibly dirty and nothing came out. It didn't seem to make any difference. Cleaning the filter definitely does solve the problem, it just doesn't last long at all.

Slight derail.. where do you buy your white vinegar from? I can only find those spray bottles and it’s gone in no time. Thanks 😃

You buy a special cleaning thing, shove it in, then do an empty load on high heat. Same as what you are supposed to do with your washing machine. I do both of these regularly. About every 10 years

Your last line had me spitting out my tea 😁 I also ‘regularly’ clean both… for me possibly as often as every 5years - look at me showing off!

I buy 5 litre bottles off eBay.

I buy 5 litre bottles off eBay.

Or you can just get it in tesco. In ours its in both the condiments section and the cleaning section.

ThatAgileRosePanda · 09/01/2026 23:37

I put a cleaning bottle thingy in and run it on a hot cycle every couple of months. Cleans out the gunk. Try it, you’ll have cleaner dishes and your dishwasher will live longer.

Oh Blimey. You've never cleaned your dishwasher? I do mine about every 3-4 weeks and they are always absolutely minging with clogged arms and the large filter is disgusting. If you don't clean your dishwasher you are basically cleaning with greasy mouldy water.

It takes 15 minutes. Just add it into your cleaning schedule.

What is a cleaning schedule 😂

exhaustedandoverit · 09/01/2026 23:40

Sadly yes but it’s forced on me. We have a new dishwasher that ‘blocks’ itself when a piece of sweetcorn gets stuck in the filter. It also gets things trapped in the top rotating bit so mugs don’t come out clean. I clean the filter most days. And I think the rotator has seen more interdental brush action than my teeth these last few months.
My old one got cleaned maybe twice a year.
Because it’s such a princess the door and seal gets absolutely filthy too so I have to clean that also. I’d honestly wash by hand if I could be arsed. One day it’ll be launched out of the door and I won’t be sorry.

So yeah. I know I have to do it but I don’t want to.

Inwhitelights · 09/01/2026 23:44

Since I cleaned mine, which also involved topping up the salt bit, for the following few days after, all the mugs and glasses came out with salt round the rim… so I just poured in some tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and ice and had myself a few martinis! Rewarded for all my hard work! 🍸

Mumandcarer80 · 09/01/2026 23:46

Yes I put mine through a maintenance wash at least once a month.

Kingscallops · 09/01/2026 23:48

Oh cheers, I never thought of that! @WhatFlavourIsIt

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/01/2026 23:49

I bought dishwasher cleaner from the posh supermarket and it foamed so much the dishwasher refused to function and I had to get Dishwasher Repair Man out to fix it. Cost to me, £90.

I do clean the filter a couple of times a month, though.

Kingscallops · 09/01/2026 23:51

pastabest · 09/01/2026 23:21

That's what it's supposed to do.

Rinse plates. Release tablet. Wash in soapy water. Rinse again. Dry.

Yeah but I find it's not always washed everything properly.

justasking111 · 09/01/2026 23:51

Our dishwasher broke before Christmas. The man came out to fix it and told DH off because the filter hadn't been cleaned recently.

My excuse a new hip a few weeks ago, on two sticks, I can't bend down that far to remove everything. DH was embarrassed 😳

😆 🤣 😂 😹

We acquired a dishwasher from the previous owners of our house. I’d done the filter a couple of times and the cleaning chemical wash but I knew I’d have to do it ‘properly’ at some point as pretty sure the previous owners had never cleaned it. Watched a YouTube video about it. I removed the seal, cleaned it and put it back and the only way to describe it is when they clean the fatburgs out of the sewers. Grim. It was a hassle but at least I know I’m cleaning everything in my own filth going forward not somebody else’s 😅

user38 · 10/01/2026 00:00

We eat a lot of tomato based food. The fat/grease deposits on our dishwasher are generally orange. its really disgusting

Driftingawaynow · 10/01/2026 00:04

Helps if you rinse stuff before putting it in. I love unblocking the propellers

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/01/2026 00:10

I used to have to unblock the propellers/spinny arms regularly but we moved house to somewhere with half decent water pressure and now I hardly ever have to do it. Used to use a pointy sharp knife to dig egg shell out of the holes (and no, I don’t know what egg shell was doing in there either. I rinse everything under the taps before putting it in. I blame DH) and then hold the whole thing up to the tap until water came shooting out of the holes.

justasking111 · 10/01/2026 00:22

I had a piece of sweetcorn in a propellor once. I couldn't get the bastard out.

Choppychop · 10/01/2026 00:45

After ten years in my new build my dishwasher broke :( I now wash dishes by hand as I need a new dishwasher. Yeah, you are meant to clean it.

MrsClatterbuck · 10/01/2026 00:55

I try once a month but this has reminded me I haven't done it for a few months due to an injury so dh has been in charge of the dishwasher. I use if I can get them the fairy pods for cleaning your dishwasher. Last place I got them was Home Bargains but they haven't had them in ages so am using the Finish ones which you put on the bottom of your dishwasher and then run a normal cycle with your usual cleaner so no running a cycle on empty. I use the fairy dishwasher pods which are supposed to contain something to keep your machine clean.
Also this has reminded me I need to top up the salt and rinse aid.

My skirting boards however are a disgrace! I do the dishwasher and washing machine religiously after a lecture from a repair engineer.

I bet his wife cleans his dishwasher & washing machine filter.

tinyspiny · 10/01/2026 01:44

I put a cleaner in my dishwasher on the first of every month, I use the Finish ones that go in with a normal wash , and my husband checks the filters whenever the salt or rinse aid need filling up . I put soda crystals in with every wash in the washing machine .
