Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

Strange Post we arent qualified to do.our own hair.
Hairdressing is a skills like others.

Do you do your own eléctrica, plumbing, and other things. No uou get an expert in.
I dlnt know anyone who pays 100.pounds for a hair cut anyway.

Exaggeration much. Even if she does its up to her.

Post a picture with your face blanked out.

Beat me to it! Please prove your point @Moontan and post a picture. If your hair looks as good as a £100 professional cut I’ll order new scissors tonight and do my own!

When did you train to be a hairdresser/barber?

Do i need to be a qualified hairdresser to write the statement

"Both barbers and hairdressers do trims"

? I dont think so

I glanced at one of our town's hairdressers' price list yesterday. They have lower prices for men than for women and I'm aware that most if not all others do this, too. And it's not because men tend to have short hair and women long - the women's prices are scaled for length of hair.

HOW do hairdressers get away with this?

Because they know (many) women will pay it. Some women - though they will deny this - have some hilarious idea that if they pay a lot for their haircut/style/colour that it must automatically be better than someone who pays a third of what they pay. (They're wrong.)

It's scary how brainwashed some women are. And hairdressers (and the beauty and fashion industry as a whole) play on this ...

I already said no. I will never ppst a photo pf myself when a stranger requests it.

Lol. Why on earth would I

You do if you're claiming it's the same!

Silly idea. If the OP does this, and her hair style is nice, she will be accused of posting someone else's head/haircut.

OP asks a question. Is pretty much unanimously told people disagree with her because (and they list their very valid reasons)….

OP continues to argue that they’re wrong. Bonkers!

As it happens I pay £23 for a cut and blow dry every 6/7 weeks. My son and husband pay £14 for a cut every 3 weeks so they work out roughly the same cost.

Yes exactly. What OP is forgetting is that barbers work on the premise that they charge less because they rely on frequency of visit, seeing as men tend to have shorter hair so would visit more often to keep it short and tidy.

Women have longer hair that they possibly have highlighted or trimmed every 8-12 weeks. Therefore, the costs work out to being equal as many people have mentioned in this thread.

There would be an outcry if barbers started charging men £100 every month to cut their hair 🤪- that would be ridiculous

GreyTS · 09/01/2026 17:01

Hmm 🤔 I’d have to see what this haircut of yours looks like, and not just flattering angles and filters on a photo. I am a v groomed person so as well as cuts and colour appointments I also get regular blow-dries before nights out etc. No way can so come close to the result I get at the hairdressers

JHound · 09/01/2026 17:01

My hair isn’t straight so cutting it myself is not an option.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/01/2026 17:01

For the same reason I don't drill my own teeth with a black and decker

YYYDlilah · 09/01/2026 17:02

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:53

They're not really. A lot of women want basic trims.

Ive seen men get their hair trimmed. It took the same time, as me getting my hair trimmed. Yet women are charged more.

Edited

I said tend to be not are.

PattiPatty · 09/01/2026 17:02

I hate going to the hairdresser. The noise. The feeling of the sink at the back of my neck. The mirrors. The inaudible chitchat. The head massage ambush.
Same. I loathed and detest salons but I can't cut my own. I think if you have very long hair it's easy and I have done that but any kind of style on short to shoulder length hair needs a hairdresser.
Mine has a salon in her garden, never more than one client, we know each other because local. £20 every 8 weeks.
DHs hair OTOH is easy. Five minutes with a decent pair of hairdresser's scissors.

Dweetfidilove · 09/01/2026 17:03

It wasn't the marketing company, but the older girls with the sharp cuts looking like they were cut and curled by goddesses.

I have one 1 hairdresser that I visit when I need a short cut and I never question her prices. I walk out of there strutting 💃🏾.

muddyford · 09/01/2026 17:03

I pay £23 every six weeks for my haircut. It looks thick and soft and modern. I cut it myself during lockdown and looked like a novice monk. Never again.

Did you see what I posted earlier: ** I have long hair so it takes longer to style and I pay about £60 every three months. My husband has short hair and goes for a cut roughly every month. He pays about £25.
Therefore, he pays more than I do throughout the year for haircuts

He pays more than I do

AgnesMcDoo · 09/01/2026 17:04

I cut my own hair during the lock downs.

which is why I'm happy to pay a skilled person who knows what’s she’s doing the going rate for a decent haircut.

it’s not at all easy.

Climbingrosexx · 09/01/2026 17:04

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:12

What do you mean "yeah right".

See this is what I think is shocking.

Marketing companies have made women think that its not even possible to cut our own hair and we MUST get someone else to do it.

Its easy to cut hair

I think if you are able to cut your own hair and do a good job that's because you naturally have the skill and talent to do that. Whereas I on the other hand 😱

StrippeyFrog · 09/01/2026 17:04

It depends on the style/length. I cut my own because I hate the experience of going to a hairdressers, but I’m sure my hair would probably look better if I did go. It’s not worth the risk for a lot of people.

Barleycat · 09/01/2026 17:05

I have curly hair . Been cutting it myself now for at least 10 years. Its easy and must gave saves me hundreds if not thousands. I hated going to the hairdressers so its a win all round.

With your face blanked out no one would be any the wiser BUT we would all be able to see whether your haircut looks as good as a professional haircut.

You've asked why we pay so much - personally, it’s because I currently believe my hairdresser makes a better job of it than I could - I believe that cutting my own hair would be incredibly difficult if not impossible.

You’ve said it’s easy, and you can add layers, manage to cut the back etc. If I saw your hair, and it did indeed look comparable to a professional cut, I’d be tempted to start doing my own, so that’s why a picture (with your face blanked out) would be so beneficial.

Marylou2 · 09/01/2026 17:05

I used to cut my own fringe when I was a poor student. Never again. It's easy to cut off some hair but not to do it well.

Wsiw71 · 09/01/2026 17:06

If you want a reasonably priced haircut and you live near a college that has a hair and beauty department try it. You will need time and patience, but all the students are supervised and cuts, blow drys, and colouring are checked and/or corrected by the tutor if needed. Men's barbering is sometimes taught at the colleges as well.

5128gap · 09/01/2026 17:07

I don't cut my own hair because the memory of what I did to my Barbie and girls world is as strong today as it was in 1975.
I pay my hairdresser a lot because when I said "Can you do it for £3.50 today?" She said "No."

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 09/01/2026 17:07

No way I could afford £100! I sometimes go to the local college & if you have a Level 3 student, you can get a really fab cut for peanuts. I think cut, colour & finish is only about £20. It takes longer but I don’t mind that. As the college salon gets very booked up, my other option is a mobile hairdresser who only charges £15 for a trim & is a great cutter!
