Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

Sounds like an excuse to me. You can take a photo outside.

You insisted on asking me to post a photo.

Another poster then said to you "why don't YOU post a photo"

You haven't. I don't care about seeing a photo of you as im not weird. Stop asking other people for photos

If you’re not that bothered about the photo, why keep posting about it?

But that isn’t what she said she would do…
still struggling with the reading comprehension..

If she was going to post a photo she would. It wouldn't matter if she is outside walking or whatever.

I note that she didn't ask me where I was, when she insisted on me posting a photo!

I was also outside walking. She didnt ask me if it was convenient for me. It was just "post a photo NOW"

That's nice that you do your own highlights! My friend does hers at home too.

Thanks! Saves a fortune. There’s lots of YouTube tutorials and you can get a comb from Superdrug which collects the highlight sections out for you.

woolandflowers · 09/01/2026 18:10

It’s not easy for everyone to cut hair and it really depends on your haircut. Also, the experience is lovely and for many, worth paying for real skill with someone who is properly trained. It’s also NICE to be pampered, to get a massage or a great hair wash or a lovely tea and a chat. It’s the whole experience of it. And for mums, it also might be one of the rare times she might get out on her own for some her-time. No way would I ever stop paying for my hour and a half of self care…plus my hair dresser is so talented!

Yes of course they can want to.

I was replying to the poster who wrote "going to the hairdresser might be the only time they get to themselves". That sentence didn't make sense.

Makes sense to me!

When did she demand it immediately? Struggling with comprehension again?

ElegantFowl · 09/01/2026 18:11

A good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold. Mine charges £170 for a trim, sounds a lot, but she’s hugely skilled and it’s worth every penny.

I used to think that but then I found a hairdresser abroad on YT who women travel from all over the world to see - and you know what - I can see why. He’s amazing. Suddenly £1000 seems fair enough. 😆

Is it Rami Jalabi lol

Allseeingallknowing · 09/01/2026 18:12

Moontan · 09/01/2026 18:02

Then use the technique for shorter hair

Which is? Much harder to cut short hair well, especially if it’s thin and fine

Which you declined to do (which is, of course, your choice) so whether is was convenient is irrelevant, no?

GhostMutt · 09/01/2026 18:13

Why do you think it is that professional hairdressers don’t just put their clients’ hair into ponytails or plaits in front of their face and lob off a bit when they give a haircut?

Littlemisscapable · 09/01/2026 18:13

OP you do you. Seemingly the majority of the rest of us need to go to a hairdressers for a decent cut..

Perrylobster · 09/01/2026 18:13

My hair is so easy to cut - I also cut my own fringe when I have one. It does depend on your hair type and the style you want though. One of my friends with long straight hair definitely cuts their own hair.

Why bother to reply if you are not remotely interested in the photo?

My hairdresser does an amazing job. Cutting and colouring myself would look shit in comparison. It’s not that easy for everyone.

Yes, still waiting for the OP to tell us how to do this…

tealandteal · 09/01/2026 18:14

I know full well I COULD cut my own hair, I’m not brainwashed. However I don’t want to, the hair dresser can do so many different things and colour my hair. I only go once a year.

It’s quite patronising to say that women haven’t thought of any alternative to going to the hairdresser.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/01/2026 18:15

Moontan · 09/01/2026 18:14

Of course you are!
Should probably watch the grammar though, as you are so keen to point out the ‘errors’ made by other posters…

Pinkladyapplepie · 09/01/2026 18:15

To qualify as a hairdresser it is not just learning to cut etc, they learn about different hair types, scalp and hair care, chemicals, skin complaints, customer care the list is very extensive and by no means easy. They also need to keep ahead of new techniques and products.
I would never cut and colour my own hair, although it can be expensive in some circumstances I appreciate their skill and know my attempts would be vastly inferior.

usedtobeaylis · 09/01/2026 18:16

I used to let my friends cut my hair, when I was 15. At that point I didn't care if it was straight and one time ended up with very short hair after my friend attempted to even up her butcher job. I'm now pushing 50, I know I can't cut my own hair, and I know I don't want my friends to cut my hair. I try not to pay too much for a professional cut but given that it needs cut and I don't set the prices - that's why I pay so much for it.

Goldwren1923 · 09/01/2026 18:17

Since when can people not take photos when they are outside?

Very easy to do

Comprehension again. I did not say I was outside.

JohnBullshit · 09/01/2026 18:18

People have different priorities from you. I need someone who knows what they're doing to get my hair the way I like it. I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for that skill. If I can't afford it, I prefer to grow it out until I can, rather than butcher it myself. I personally don't go in for colouring my hair, but I understand that this is important to others.
