Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

I enjoy going to the hairdressers and I also don’t think it’s that expensive. I went the other day and it was £84 for half head of highlights, cut and blow dry. I could have reduced it to £71 but I chose to pay extra for a leave in treatment. I only go once every 4 months so not too bad.

TheSalvadorsStickbymebaby · 09/01/2026 19:13

I tried trimming my eyebrows during lockdown and fucked that up.
No way would I try and cut my own hair.

Why don't you concentrate on your own hair and let those of us who want it done correctly, spend their money on it. So you cut your own hair? Big deal. I've scrimped in the past when I've had no choice. I get my hair cut and coloured professionally and eyebrows and nails done at the same place. My choice.

Same. I also genuinely enjoy having my hair done.
At the moment I can afford to get my hair, nails and brows done but in the past I’ve prioritised my hair.

There’s a long list of things I’d sacrifice before I’d stop my 6 weekly visits to get my hair done.

Heartbreaksally · 09/01/2026 19:18

The thought of you being in charge of scissors is quite frightening OP

I have short hair and pay £16 at a barbers. Same style costs me £50 in a salon and takes soooo much longer.

Same, I went short a few months ago and have a barber attack it with clippers for me every couple of months. Much cheaper and much easier to look after

Don’t ask for that, OP gets mightily offended!

Doesn’t have to be OP! Anyone who thinks they do a good job of cutting their own hair is welcome to submit!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 09/01/2026 19:43

this thread is quite mad. I think OP is very argumentative and can’t see anyone’s opinions other than their own.

there’s no way I’d try to cut my hair. It’d be awful and messy and I don’t need to. I’m happy to pay for a qualified person. Nobody has brainwashed me. I also pay for qualified electricians, plumbers and mechanics. Yes I could probably watch a YouTube for some things. But there’s people who have trained for it for safety and quality reasons.

it’s really demeaning to qualified professionals to continue the narrative that anyone can cut hair.

great for you OP - you seem happy to do yours. Other people do to. But equally many of us are happy to pay for the service. There are also many people with disabilities who couldn’t not do this themselves.

you also seems to be focusing on how women are brainwashed. Why women? Why not men.

I did cut my kids hair in lockdown. It did not look good. It was messy. It took ages and caused tears. I pay good money for my kids to have their hair cut quickly and beautifully.

billiongulls · 09/01/2026 19:48

It is absolutely not easy to cut hair, especially short cuts with dead straight hair. I figure I wear my hair every day. So happy to spend a little money on it. I don't buy make up, get my nails done, or spend much in clothes. But I like having good hair. Just a choice.

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:52

That poster didnt say that other women are ridoculous. She said that she thinks its ridiculous to spend HER money on haircuts when she can do it herself

Thank you! As usual, MNetters interpret posts to suit their own narrative! 🙄

It's a ridiculous thing to ME, if you want to spend that kind of money on haircuts and are happy, then do it, nobody is stopping you!

@Moontan

I don’t wanna cut my own hair

I don’t mind paying for it cutting and colouring by my hairdresser

My appearance is important to me

🤷‍♀️

diddl · 09/01/2026 20:10

I hate going to the hairdressers.

So I cut my own hair.

Have to get someone to straighten the back though😂

SusanChurchouse · 09/01/2026 20:21

My thick coarse curly hair needs layering and thinnning to sit well. I’d struggle to do it myself. I did cut my own hair as a teenager when I was time rich/money poor. It took a while and didn’t look brilliant. Now I have enough money to comfortably afford £50 every 3 months or so.

Bit like making a birthday cake. I can make a decent cake and it will look ok, but if I wanted something that looked great I’d pay a proper baker/cake decorator.

I currently have about an inch of hair as it’s just growing back after chemo. It needs tidied but I don’t need the full hairdresser treatment so I’m wondering if a barber could tidy it up for me.

HorseyWoman · 09/01/2026 20:22

To be honest, longer hair doesn't need cutting nearly as often as people think. Shorter or styled hair does of course. I'm happy having mine trimmed twice a year and paying someone else to do it properly. I cut my children's hair though. I'm currently deciding whether to stop colouring my hair. It's 50% grey and I'm only 42. The cost every 2 to 3 months is just better spent on my nails and skincare.

Lol I'm a hairdresser !
I am excellent at precision cutting and colour corrections !
I cut my hair in a bob it was terrible 😂
It's longer now so I do cut in layers and bangs and I do my own colour and my hair admittedly looks good now I'm doing it myself ! BUT if u have a precise precision sharp blunt bob or a pixi or asymmetric haircut it's not as easy to do yourself because u need to be able to see and cut at the correct angle !
Cutting curly hair yourself is pretty easy because curls cover up a multitude of errors and long thick hair is pretty easy same reason ! Fine hair will show every error !
So it's basically 50/50 Also yes there are very skilled stylists and many that are not !!
Please don't paint the picture that hairdressing is easy because it isn't !!

I dont mind either would never attempt my own hair and i quite like chatting to a hairdresser too.

After Covid hairdresser had to spend alot of time sorting out people's hair who'd cut it themselves.

How dare you learn a skill, offer a service and charge a living wage for it!! 😜

Cherrytree86 · 09/01/2026 20:52

I also don’t for a second believe that you do a good a job OP as a hairdresser - a professional who is trained and experienced. I just don’t. @Moontan

Worth the investment in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:13

Have you ever tried?

Yes in lockdown and it was a disaster! I can probably cut in a straight line but can't do an asymmetric pixie which needs thinning out on certain sections but not others and shave the back at the bottom then blend it in so it doesn't look like a step.

IngridBergmannn · 09/01/2026 22:28

I mean... I'm an amateur/self-taught seamstress. I do alterations for myself/family, mainly. I can make simple clothing. Could I clothe myself head to toe? Sure. Would it look as good as (insert your favourite brand/designer)? Yea, like hell it would. It would look amateurish. And a bit...shit.

Would my friends/colleagues tell me I look shit to my face? No. They'd either say nothing or tell me I look nice. To be polite/friendly/nice. I'd do the same.

Same with all the 'I often get told I look 10/15/20 years younger than I am'. Yes, because people usually guess your age pretty accurately, and then take 10 years off to be nice/on the safe side.

Same with the haircuts.

PurpleCoo · 09/01/2026 23:00

£100 is a lot of money, but your colleague is going to an expensive hairdresser (if that is just for a cut, that's probably the going rate for getting your hair coloured, although it sounds a lot for that too).

I think I pay about £40 for a cut and blow dry. I go about 2-3 times a year. I cut my own hair during lockdown and got loads of compliments. I have very long hair in layers and this is easy to do yourself, but for the sake of what is probably about £100 a year, I am happy to pay someone to do a better job of it than me, even though DIY is more than adequate. I haven't dyed my hair for about 12 years, so that helps too. My hair looks far better it's natural colour.

I don't really enjoy going to the hairdresser. I don't hate it, but it's just an inconvenience really.
