Why do women pay so much for haircuts

Moontan · 09/01/2026 16:04

My colleague just came in complaining about how expensive it is to get her hair cut. She paid 100 pounds.

I was thinking - why don't more women cut their own hair

I think that advertising and marketing has convinced a lot of women - that they must pay someone else a huge amount of money to cut their hair for them.

When it is actually very easy to cut it ourselves.

My mum always cut her own hair.

i also always cut my own hair. Its really easy to cut it very straight at the back, and I also cut layers at the front of my hair

To qualify as a hairdresser it is not just learning to cut etc, they learn about different hair types, scalp and hair care, chemicals, skin complaints, customer care the list is very extensive and by no means easy. They also need to keep ahead of new techniques and products.
I would never cut and colour my own hair, although it can be expensive in some circumstances I appreciate their skill and know my attempts would be vastly inferior.

I've just taken my daughter for a much needed cut, she's had trims before but this was the first time she had had a cut and dry. Absolutely no fucking way I could even attempt what she does. I showed her a photo of what my daughter's 'ideal' was and she done a terrific job. She's undercharging for what she does if anything - she's the only hairdresser I've ever been to that can cut a bob that doesn't automatically stick out if you let it dry naturally. Another female dominated area where the actual skill is hugely under valued - unless it's a camp enough man.

You might think your hair looks ok. It probably wouldn't to a professional.

We all tried during lockdown 😆 Never again!

Lockdown was when I started cutting my own hair. I tired a salon once since and decided it wasn’t worth it.

I now do my own cutting and pre-children I would indulge in a blow out if I had quiet weekend and wanted to do some self care. I think it’s a good 10 years before I’ll have that kind of spare time again 😂

bellocchild · 09/01/2026 18:20

My hairdresser is far less expensive than some of the quotes mentioned on here, but I would willingly pay far more than he charges: he's trained to cut hair, and I'm not!

Emas82 · 09/01/2026 18:23

I go to the hairdresser's about 3 or 4 times per year, have a colour and cut, and pay about £160 per time.
I don't pay for any other beauty treatments (nails, lashes, hair removal etc).
Worth every penny! It's as much for my soul as it is my hair. Couple of hours to myself, head massage, massage chair, and lovely hair at the end!
I think if you don't enjoy that experience then absolutely do your own hair. But don't suggest we all do it cos some of us enjoy it and appreciate the training and hard work that has gone into it!

BettyRubblecausestrouble · 09/01/2026 18:23

Well, I have dyspraxia!
can you imagine the disaster ?
cannot even cut paper straight.
plus my hairdresser has trained and qualified…just like any trades/ craftsperson.
trimming up long hair and ends is not creating a hair style.
some of us like to change our length, style often, not keep the same look.
and, I bet it does look like you have cut your own hair!

WiltedLettuce · 09/01/2026 18:24

In my case, I find it helps to be able to see what you're doing.

I'll have a go at cutting my DH/DC's hair but not my own.

Neighbours87 · 09/01/2026 18:24

Nora ephron once said going to the hairdressers it’s cheaper than psychoanalysis. You get sit in a chair with a magazine and a coffee while someone else takes care of you. For a lot of women that’s the only time that happens. Also that feeling of having your hair done is amazing

Thehandinthecookiejar · 09/01/2026 18:25

I go once every 4-5 months when my hair becomes to long. Hand over £50-60 for a trim (essentially) and the mandatory blow dry that I don’t need. Never felt the need to make it a regular thing 😂

I have no idea how cutting your own hair would work though. How do you cut the hair at the back?

Moontan · 09/01/2026 18:09

If she was going to post a photo she would. It wouldn't matter if she is outside walking or whatever.

I note that she didn't ask me where I was, when she insisted on me posting a photo!

I was also outside walking. She didnt ask me if it was convenient for me. It was just "post a photo NOW"

Edited

Here it is (but don't tell anyone as I know you want to report people who ask for photos, so goodness knows what you will do with people who actually post a photo). Not brushed as I have not got home yet. And not freshly washed and blowdried. Highlighted, cut, thinned about three weeks ago. So not a "fresh" cut. And a brilliant facial disguise so no one gets frightened. Urgh - where is the photo! I will try again.

"To claim we can all just cut our own hair is laughably stupid".

Wow. Its scissors. There are loads of youtube videos on how to cut our own hair

Why don't you concentrate on your own hair and let those of us who want it done correctly, spend their money on it. So you cut your own hair? Big deal. I've scrimped in the past when I've had no choice. I get my hair cut and coloured professionally and eyebrows and nails done at the same place. My choice.

Tried again ... my hair is ridiculously thick and my face very small. So thinning is a major part of what my hairdresser does. £70 for cut, colour and dry.

Oh God, does anyone else remember the MN haircut?

Yes. An easy way to go to a Rod Stewart tribute show.

usedtobeaylis · 09/01/2026 18:29

People who have watched other people try to cut their own fringe are like 'nope' 😂

SumUp · 09/01/2026 18:30

I prefer a simple short masculine style, but I refuse to pay an extra £330 per year because I’m female. Perhaps I should identify as a man and go to a barber.

MidnightMeltdown · 09/01/2026 18:30

A good hair cut is worth paying for imo. Makes a huge difference if you get it cut my top stylist vs. just a regular stylist.

PearPartridge · 09/01/2026 18:30

I don't think it's easy to cut your own hair but I don't pay £100 for a cut. More like £35

VapeFree26 · 09/01/2026 18:31

GreyRooted · 09/01/2026 17:52

That would only be useful if they posted a picture when they had also cut their own hair to see the difference though, surely?

No one is suggesting that no one should cut their own hair but it’s absurd of the OP to suggest that everyone should/can.

As it happens, I can barely wash my hair at times due to pain..feck knows how I’d manage a cut.

The posters badgering op for a photo of her DIY cut haven't asked for a comparison photo of the op's last salon cut either.

We all know that such requests aren't actually genuine though...simply an opportunity to allow these easily-offended posters the opportunity to stick the boot in as they're oddly irritated that op doesn't need to pay for her cuts.

My post was just to make a point and I doubt the person I replied to is actually going to add a photo later of their salon cut hair for people to critique.

They have already posted a photo. 🤷‍♀️

And I don’t think anyone is ‘oddly irritated’ about OP’s, or anyone’s, ability to save money cutting their own hair. What is irritating is OP’s insistence that everyone else should do the same.

I take it back then. That'll teach me to get distracted mid-post 😂

I am in no way irritated that the OP doesn’t have to pay for haircuts. I am, however, irritated by comments re how I should spend my money or free time.

justasking111 · 09/01/2026 18:39

Mine is wavy and needs long layers. I couldn't do that. I have a dry cut, and mani/pedi for £40.

Allseeingallknowing · 09/01/2026 18:46

Can we have some photos of do it yourself haircuts?

ThatMintMember · 09/01/2026 18:48

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 09/01/2026 16:38

How?! I’ve been cutting DH’s hair since lockdown, it’s a ten minute job fading from 2 to a 6 grade.

DH has cut my hair before now, even into entirely new styles, but I now have more complex colouring that I don’t want to bother him with so get a cut and colour every quarter for £120.

I had never even held clippers before doing that lockdown haircut so had no idea what i was doing. I did not get the fade right at all so it looked like a bowl cut and I scratched his neck by pushing too hard! He would not want me to do his hair regularly😂

Don’t ask for that, OP gets mightily offended!
