Military conscription

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 09/01/2026 10:25

There is lots of talk about if ww3 happens then military conscription will happen

This is basically people who sit in an office safely saying we need to either send ourselves or out children to fight and die in horrible conditions

Am I unreasonable to think that anyone who thinks this is a good idea

They should be the first ones to sign up and to lead by example

Any politicians who think this is a good idea, there children should be the first to go

Russia is literally sending troops in wheel chairs and crunches to the front line

So age, disability and gender will not be a problem for anyone who supports any conscription policy's, they can go first

Also the UK will not be invaded, we are not Ukrainian, If we were more like Ukraine I would be more in favour of this as the country itself is under threat

Warfare today is very different. It will be mostly sitting in bunkers flying armed drones attacking civilians, remote controlling robot dogs with machine guns or exploding tanks. Or flying fighter jets or bombers. Or pounding cities from ships ten miles out at sea. More civilians have been killed in the wars in Israel, Gaza, Sudan, Lebanon, and Syria than have military personnel.

That should tell you something about the future of warfare. The rule book has been tossed in the garbage. Being a civilian is no protection.

Joining up is probably the safest thing any person can do. It’s just too bad I’m too old, or I’d sign up if there were a WWIII.

This doesn’t apply to Ukraine / Russia though. It’s millions who have been sadly used in this way.

I hope all the people who are for this

They and there families will be first to sign up

I think it's easy to say that we should do this as everyone always has an excuse why it should not be them

It's easy to assume it will be someone's else family and children who will go first and they will get to continue their lives as normal

But gender, age and any other reason should not be an excuse

If you think this is a good idea, you should go first

I'm for it and a good few of my family are or have been in the forces. Although it would be a pain training pampered youngsters who are made to be there

Conscription worries me as my 17 year old ds attempted to take his own life when he was 12. We were told afterwards that he would never be able to join the armed forces as a result (much to MIL's annoyance). I don't know what would happen to people like ds. Would he still have to go and fight or would he be given other war related work like in a factory or hospital.

Hopefully your mil will be volunteering if it comes to it then

Who was fighting a world war already?

It only became a world war when Britain, France and their respective worldwide empires/commonwealths declared war on Germany.

Edited

Because Germany were already invading other countries

Re pampered youngsters maybe take the older ones who won’t be pampered of course.

I'm going to go out on a limb but haven't we had an influx of "men of fighting age" recently? They should help too

They’ll be on the way to another country claiming asylum

My dc would not go. I would not go. Why should the general public be dragged into the real life war games of rich old men.

Because the rich old men will bomb the shit out of you anyway, without resistance? A bomb doesn't care about your political views, it just kills you and flattens your home.

Different to some degree but still highly risky..

In the Ukraine conflict Russian counter measures have forced many of the operators of small drones to operate from hides pretty much on the battlefield....which the Russians try and find and target with artillery or their own drones.

Flying fighters and ground attack aircraft is no guarantee of surviving...the loss rates on both sided has been high - as would be expected.

I'd certainly caution any thinking that there are safe roles or specialisations.....

Thirdchildjoy · 11/01/2026 08:23

We don't have a population who would be up for a fight any more. We have a tiny professional army, and lets face it most of the population are so fat and lazy they would be just too easy targets. The US won't step in and save up again. We will just be Russian at some point. Schools ought to start teaching Russian so that we are more to be prepared.

Germany invading its neighbours does not make a world war. If one country invading another made a world war, the planet would have been in a constant state of world war since time immemorial, right up to the present day.

Britain could not have joined WW2 late because there no world war already ongoing to join when it (and France) declared war on Germany in 1939.

SerendipityJane · 10/01/2026 18:20

Do you think it would be easy working with an influx of people who don’t want to be there?

For some of us, that is a daily routine ...

Thank you for your service. I am well aware that it's because of you, I don't have to do it.

E2A: The first step to any conscription would be calling up people on reserve. My friend in the RAF was caught by that when she left in 1989 ....

Edited

I work with loads of people who don’t really want to be there - but they did once & that’s why they signed up. I think that’s completely different to actually conscripted people and far different to regular jobs that have 28 day notice periods.

To be anyone who prefers time at work than time with their family needs to reconsider their life choices.

The Hundred Years War actually lasted 116 years.

Sometimes names are deceptive.

LeedsLoiner · 11/01/2026 11:49

It should be pointed out that regardless of conscription all the armed forces are currently short of new recruits - judging by the amount of advertising they are doing - so all of you who are saying “I’d be happy to do it” or “I’d happily send my kids off to do it” what’s stopping you from joining the armed forces now?

I'm too old, they won't have me.
Ds2 was ex army, when he tried to rejoin he withdrew his application after 2 years as they were taking so long to process his application.
Until they sort this mess out, they can run all the ads they like.

Don't worry OP. There will be loads of human rights lawyers using the ECHR to protect British citizens trying to escape being forcibly drafted into an army.

The ECHR can be ignored by any government.

And it doesn't prohibit compulsory military service anyway. Why would you think it did ?

Being old doesn’t have to be a barrier. I think there’s a few who are keen on this thread who fit that bill.

LlttledrummergirI · 11/01/2026 12:26

I'm 50+ which definitely puts me outside of their recruitment.

If conscription comes and this changes then it's a different kettle of fish.

The ECHR doesn't prevent people being conscripted in any European countries that already have conscription, how would anyone use it to prevent it in the UK?

Right wing SM seems to have decided that Starmer is going to introduce conscription and everyone on the left is keenly salivating at the prospect etc. So lefties should all be the ones to ,"go first". Or some such bollocks.

It is all rather pathetic.
