In wanting Mumsnet to help Judi Dench and Joanna Lumley

Last week, Israel banned 37 international aid organisations from operating in the strip, including Oxfam, Save the Children and Medicine Sans Frontieres (MSF). MSF delivers one in three of Gaza’s babies, and experts warn that immediate action must be taken to prevent a catastrophe.

It has prompted more than 100 leading members of the arts, including Dames Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, Joanna Lumley, Sienna Miller, Suranne Jones and singer Paloma Faith, to sign a letter urging popular online platform Mumsnet to join them in demanding urgent government action ensuring maternity care is accessible in Gaza.

International aid groups grapple with what Israel's ban will mean for their work in Gaza

Israel has revoked the licenses of more than three dozen humanitarian organizations, and now those groups are grappling with how that will affect aid operations in Gaza

'Come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God, and fuck off'

😂 Yes, Ricky Gervais' award speech does seem pertinent.

It would be inappropriate for Justine to support this letter on behalf of mumsnet.

There's a huge range of views on this site and the assumption of the letter writing luvvies is that mumsnetters are left-leaning social justice campaigners, which some are, but by no means all.

Why would you need to be left leaning to support women’s healthcare l?

Why so nasty?

Can’t help themselves. There’s nothing so nasty as an anonymous keyboard warrior who wouldn’t say boo to a goose in person.

Haha yes Ricky Gervaise 😂

We are not so naive to fall for that. This isn’t about women’s healthcare

Upstartled · 12/01/2026 10:00

Really @Blossomtoes? I'm as robust in my day to day conversation as I am here. I can't abide stupidity dressed up as kindness.

How interesting that you would immediately identify with my very general post.

🙄 I assume that many of the posters here are similarly minded. I can't imagine why you think mnetters become meek and compliant in the face of emotional manipulation and shame tactics offline?

Ellen2shoes · 12/01/2026 10:04

What conspiracy is this?

The one where MN is anti-trans rather than pro-women? Where if you don’t give in to manipulative open letters you are ‘against women’s health care’? Those conspiracies?

Genericfestiveusername · 12/01/2026 11:28

Twiglets1 · 12/01/2026 08:56

It’s the usual playbook of resorting to personal attacks when they their argument fails to convince.

Do you not think accusing posters of supporting a terrorist organisation is a personal attack?

I don't follow that board. This is getting very repetitive.

This thread very much is about women’s healthcare, pregnant women’s healthcare and the importance of them having adequate care to prevent adverse maternal and infant outcomes, it does relate to Palestinian women but the race of women we support should not be pertinent to whether we support them surely?

OP posts:
Upstartled · 12/01/2026 12:36

Palestine is not a race. It's a country run by terrorists.

GiantBranch · 12/01/2026 12:40

Ellen2shoes · 12/01/2026 09:54

Why so nasty?

Yes I don’t really get the celebrity hatred on here, Joanna Lumley has made me laugh many times over the years quite appreciative of that.
talk of luvvies, leftists, elites just smacks of internet chat room brainwashing
Charities/campaigns have routinely used celebrities for forever as it is a proven (perhaps minorly irritating) means of raising their profile and getting media coverage.
Find some of the discourse on here really bizarre

No it isn’t, it is about a manipulative open letter concerning Israel’s security arrangements put in place to ensure NGOs don’t provide a route for terrorists to attack Israel.

5MinuteArgument · 12/01/2026 12:59

Asking mumsnet to support this is divisive. There are many good causes out there. Why not let mumsnetters support the causes that mean the most to them individually rather than lumping all the mumsnetters together?

GiantBranch · 12/01/2026 13:00

The aid agencies are trying to get access to pregnant women in Gaza, not Israel?

Perhaps they did not expect maternal healthcare to be divisive and Mumsnet already runs other similar campaigns relating to UK maternal health

Anything to do with Israel-Palestine is divisive, unfortunately.

Aid Agencies allowing themselves to be used as cover for terrorists….

If someone shows support for Hamas then they are factually supporting a terrorist organisation as Hamas are considered terrorists in the UK.

I don't recall any individuals being targeted on this thread by being accused of supporting a terrorist organisation though.

Why would they involve Justine in this issue without giving the most cursory glance at the Conflict in the Middle East board? That would show them immediately how divisive any debate about Gaza is. There is even a long thread there about this very issue. Note the number of deletions and MN intervention.

Yes I understand there are very opposing views regarding Israel and Gaza, I didn’t think this would be extended to the denial of care to pregnant women, but you live and learn
