Coats make me mad- is anyone else like this?

I find coats (especially bulky winter ones) make me irationally angry.

I hate the fact that a person needs so many of them for different scenarios and they take up so much space. They look untidy.

I hate how some outfits don't fit under a coat so you get the horrid bulky armpit or sleeves caught halfway up your coat sleeves sensations.

I'm short so I feel like coats just make me look dumpy (even more of an issue now that I'm a bit overweight hmph)

My husband bought two new coats at the weekend and though they are lovely I just would rather they didn't exist. As soon as we got in in the house after buying them I had a silly disagreement with him which I now realise was due to the stress that the coats caused me! (The disagreement wasn't actually about the coats!!!)

Is anyone else like this?
I have sensory issues (e.g. misophonia) and my reaction to coats is similar to my reaction to that so I wonder if it is connected. But I don't even have to be wearing the damn things! Just looking at a coat hung up makes me stressed/panic/angry!

Hoping to find I'm not the only one 😁

They take up so much room in the wardrobe first off. If I leave them hanging up in the hall they look untidy. I’ve only one thick padded one, one short jacket and one longer rain coat. Those three get on my nerves. Have to take them off to drive.

Whosthetabbynow · 06/01/2026 11:28

We have so many coats in the downstairs cupboard that getting one out is more of an effort than the actual going out.

takealettermsjones · 06/01/2026 11:30

This is a wonderfully weird thing to get annoyed by, and I do mean that positively - I genuinely love hearing about quirks like this 😂

I do hear you on the bunching up thing though! I hold onto my cuff (with the same hand) to put my coat on and if I accidentally let go of it or it doesn't go in properly, I do it again 😂

LVhandbagsatdawn · 06/01/2026 11:30

I had a housemate who had no end of coats. We couldn't actually open the door properly because the coat rack was so stuffed with her coats!

You don't need that many. One smart, one casual / waterproof. That's it. That will cover you in all scenarios.

EllaPepper · 06/01/2026 11:31

you are absolutely not alone in this. i literally had this conversation with someone at the weekend. i have a large bust so finding a coat which actually fits is a huge challenge, let alone it looking attractive / being functional etc. and yes, their bulkiness and general untidiness around the house annoys me too. i have resorted to more of a 'coatigan' with umbrella when necessary.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/01/2026 11:33

Nope. I’m the exact opposite. I LOVE coats. You can never have too many coats (or jackets). I’m always so happy when the weather gets cooler and my coats can come out.

My father is exactly the same so I blame him. It must be genetic. 😜

MightyGoldBear · 06/01/2026 11:34

I hear you.
Does your partner understand? I'd definitely explain it to him if not.

I find jumpers the same. I'm likely audhd with sensory issues. Clothes can really make me angry. My husband is similar so we both know eachothers quirks and give eachother a little leeway. My children are also the same. As a whole family we limit the time we have to be in uncomfortable clothes.

I find spring and late autumn a much nicer time. Height of summer I also find irritating! I have often joked that I need a 24/7 climate control suit but it would have to be airy and light.

I am also short so often purely for that clothes don't fit or feel right.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/01/2026 11:35

I don’t mind having them, but I hate wearing bulky winter coats! I find them so uncomfortable, just too thick and they drive me mad

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/01/2026 11:36

I'm starting to feel the same way about bags tbh. I used to carry a handbag all the time but now I have to take a backpack to work every day I just don't use my handbags at all and they seem to be everywhere...

MightyGoldBear · 06/01/2026 11:37

I do find a gillet gives me arm freedom and I wear a thermal under it. I have a biggish bust though so they can make me look a little top heavy. I've just come to conclusion I can't have everything 🫠 warmth, style, functionality I often have to sacrifice one of them.

I've ditched handbags entirely and only have a backpack. The freedom!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 06/01/2026 11:39

I love coats but we need a bigger hallway/house as it’s impractically small currently, with no storage space…

Poodleville · 06/01/2026 11:46

Yep hate having to deal with layers and storing them!

Starlight1984 · 06/01/2026 11:47

Urgh trying to ram massive coats into an (already full) wardrobe just winds me up no end. They always end up coming off the hangers too as I never bother zipping them up 😂

Whosthetabbynow · 06/01/2026 11:47

Plus…lovely padded coat with fur hood. Can’t wear it whilst driving in case I have to reverse and the fur on the hood (when it’s down btw) blocks my view to the side 😬

Morepositivemum · 06/01/2026 11:52

I’m the opposite, I don’t have enough coats - before I put on weight I had lovely coats and now I’ve a rain jacket and a lovely wool one that can’t be closed. I miss my jackets and coats!!

AyUpLass · 06/01/2026 11:56

My coat is annoying me at the moment when in the car, I try to turn round to hand the kids something and it’s like being in a straight jacket! I’ve just sold a load on Vinted too. (And just bought another this morning, oops) but yes they take up so much wardrobe and house space!! Bring on summer

KimberleyClark · 06/01/2026 11:56

Aaaaargh coats. I have a lovely thick padded coat with fur edged hood. But the hood comes down over my eyes. And the zip sticks all the time. It’s a real event when I manage to zip it all the way up or down in one go.

Then there’s my lighter coat, a Regatta. It’s a lovely coat, well designed, the hood has a peak which is brilliant for keeping the rain of your face, but it has a habit of randomly unzipping itself from the bottom.

What is it with fucking zips?

Goldenbear · 06/01/2026 12:06

I like many coats but not puffy ones. My Mum is short and doesn't like many styles as they swamp her.

I totally agree - but then I grew up in Canada so coats in the winter were a must. Easier there as most houses had a downstairs hall closet where all the coats were hung up (think large double wardrobe) so it wasn't a problem. Plus of course boots at the bottom 😂

Wexone · 06/01/2026 12:09

i hear ya - am very particular about a coat now, i have tried loads. Cant be too puffy as you look like the Michelin man, find down filled or wool filled better not as puffy but still warm. coats too tight across the shoulders but way too pick at the waist part, coats that hang off you, - the list goes on .I need good coats as work outside with animals and walk the dogs, plus we live in a cold wet miserable country, Agree with someone above, a gilet is better sometimes for movement and not feeling bulky. I have actually started doing that with wool Jumpers now as well, wear a few thin layers ( Got a fab merino wool thin top at xmas so warm) my thermals and a sleeveless wool jumper so nit to squished under my coat when am out . I have found the more expensive brands of coats are better though - understand not everyone can afford that though

bridgetreilly · 06/01/2026 12:10

I do think you can refine the number of coats you need. Two, or possibly three, should be enough to cover all situations. Get a lighter weight raincoat that is big enough for plenty of layers on colder days. And then one that is smart enough for other occasions.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/01/2026 12:14

I am a hardy, alpine sheep in spirit.

My husband is a hairless desert mouse.

He wore five layers the other day. I wore two. He was bugging our toddler to wear his gloves, and I had to keep pointing out that, like mine, his hands were perfectly warm.

His coats distress me endlessly. The permutations! The lengths! The fabrics! The thicknesses!

I have three coats these days. Rain, long and exceptionally beautiful in the manner of a Russian witch.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/01/2026 12:15

I keep opening the understairs cupboard and staring hopelessly at the coats. I want to whittle them down but I just seem to need so MANY! A ratty old coat for dogwalking when it's cold but dry, another ratty coat for dog walking when it's wet. A smart coat for when I need to go somewhere when I'm dressed up but it's raining, a less smart coat for shopping in the rain, a 'good' coat to go over dresses for events... it's ridiculous.

Olderbutt · 06/01/2026 12:15

Im with you OP! I hate coats too. When I lived in the south West I managed with one fleece and a waterproof jacket. I moved to the Midlands and had to buy proper coats! I hate the bulkiness and when you spend any time in an overheated shop you start to boil! I hate driving wearing coats too!
