Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Has no one had lasagna and chips before? 🤔. Surely that’s not too different to lasagna and boiled potatoes

😱

That's a no. I'm trying to imagine going into my local Italian place and ordering that, they would ask me if I'm ok.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:42

But there’s a difference between a pasta dish and then potatoes on a plate and a slice of lasagna with a few potatoes on the side next to it, surely?! It just seems weird with the pasta dish. You also probably wouldn’t have a pasta dish with a plate of chips too, but a slice of lasagna with chips next to it is normal?!

It's exactly the same!
Meat, pasta, potatoes!

Damnloginpopup · 05/01/2026 18:32

We always had lasagna (or spaghetti or canneloni) with pickled onions and gherkins. I finally feel okay to admit this in public.

Lasagna with boiled spuds could work, no reason why not; chips is ok; decent garlic bread is ok BUT in heavily buttered, thickly sliced white bread it's amazing. Hot lasagna sarnies rock.

Bought the meat. Making lasagna tomorrow. OP you inspired me!

Well, Dh just sat down with it and said ‘Ooh Shepherds pie! Haven’t had this for years

But it’s the wrong way up for Shepherds pie (putting aside the fact it’s beef, in tomato sauce and has a dollop of cheese sauce on the top!

Penne would work best, cook, then slice down one side and flatten. Hey presto, mini lasagne sheets.

Or weave cooked spaghetti into flat sheets of spaghetti fabric - would add an interesting texture.

(This thread is bonkers)

OP should boil a massive pan of spaghetti, tie all the ends together, wind into a large ball then quickly knit a pasta blanket for her life or death lasagne, its the only way she can save the day or ever face her DH and DD again.

This level of mince based turmoil is no laughing matter!

After dinner ring 101 and report your kitchen crime.

Noseyoldcow · 05/01/2026 18:35

When cutting down on carbs, we found vegetable slices - courgette, turnip, kohl rabi or even cabbage leaves, or a mixture of them all - a good substitute for the pasta in lasagne.

glitterpaperchain · 05/01/2026 18:35

This whole thread is absolutely barmy 😂 I've been a vegetarian literally my entire life and even my first thought was, just mash the potatoes and make it a cottage pie, put the bechamel in the freezer for another day!

And if you want to have potatoes with lasagne fine, but you can't then insist potatoes with pasta is weird! Lasagne is pasta! And you dont put carrot or red pepper in the lasagne, it's literally just beef onion and tomato??

But it isn’t cottage pie. At all. Nothing about that is cottage pie.

My husband has always had since a child instead of lasagne sheets.... pancakes. Weird but really works just make a few, cut them into the shape of dish and layer (obviously no lemon or sugar!)
No idea where his mum got the idea it's just how it is!

The best cannelloni I have ever had was made using savoury crepes, not pasta tubes.

AfraidToRun · 05/01/2026 18:42

Make your own pasta sheets? Egg and flour and time (if you have it, appreciate you might not...)

Sighohbarn · 05/01/2026 18:43

This thread was so funny. Hope you all enjoyed your dinner, OP.

ScaredOfFlying · 05/01/2026 18:43

@Brainfogtothemaxit’s absolutely fine to cook with wine and feed it to children. The alcohol cooks off so the resulting dish is not alcoholic, same as it would be fine to eat a dish containing a wine sauce then drive afterwards. The taste is not “winey”, it just gives depth of flavour. Just don’t feed kids dishes with uncooked alcohol, such as sherry trifle or tiramisu.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:38

The potatoes were to go with the lasagna, my family like some buttery boiled potatoes with it

I don’t think I can slice the potatoes-too soft 😬

Mio Dio! 🙈🙈🙈

Have the potatoes either cold for lunch tomorrow, or pan fry or roast them to have at dinner tomorrow, they will be fine in the fridge, and then just make it into a pasta bake tonight.

or have the potatoes with the pasta bake like you were going to anyway, it’s really no difference, all our food “rules” are made up anyway

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

How about Brain Fog Pie?

Superb. 😂

People eat lasagna and chips all.the time.

Seems like people don't need Mounjaro, they need very basic education on food groups.

NoodleHorses · 05/01/2026 19:22

I thinly slice butternut squash in my lasagna but I don’t like pasta. I like the sauce, meaty bit, cheese though. Nobody has ever complained. Or at least, not to my face.

WonderfulSmith · 05/01/2026 19:23

Inspired by this thread I made lasagne for dinner tonight. However I have a much greater problem than the op - I only have white wine!!

FOJN · 05/01/2026 19:26

popcornandpotatoes · 05/01/2026 18:09

Just in case anyone doesn't know, cooking and cooling your starchy carbs like rice and potatoes develops resistant starch, so if you eat them as leftovers then next day it's very good form your gut health (obvs be careful with rice)

Does that apply if you cool it, freeze it and eat it at a later date? I always batch prepare potato wedges and brown rice because I'm too lazy to deal with the washing up for single portions.

You can use white wine! My Italian ex swore by white wine in a bolognaise sauce
