Should the person who earns more pay more for joint holiday friends not partners

Just that really.

2 friends going on holiday, should the person who earns more pay more say 75 ler cent of holiday cost, neither person wealthy, but one is part time and the other is full time so earns more.

Welcome thoughts as I am unsure.

Only if the person who earns more really wants to go on the holiday with the less affluent person but knows the less affluent person can’t pay half, and has proposed the holiday to the poorer person on the basis that they insist on paying 75% to enable the holiday to happen.

Penguinsandcoffee · 06/01/2026 09:08

No

No

bubmut · 06/01/2026 09:27

Absolutely not, where on earth did that suggestion come from? 50/50

LilacReader · 06/01/2026 09:31

ONLY IF the full-time person is not happy with what lower earner can do and is insisting on an expensive holiday.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 06/01/2026 09:38

No

LilyBunch25 · 06/01/2026 09:53

No way.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 06/01/2026 10:09

Haven't RTFT but just from the first post.... no, unless they want to.
Otherwise it's cheeky fuckery of the part time person to expect the other to pay more

Zerosleep · 06/01/2026 11:11

You are each getting an equal holiday, same flight, hotel etc so you both pay an equal amount which is half/50:50.

SexyFrenchDepression · 06/01/2026 11:55

I am assuming the OP was the friend wanting to pay less as they haven't returned to say either way?

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 06/01/2026 12:30

It depends- has the higher earner offered this because they want to go away with this particular friend and are happy to pay more or is the p/t lower earner expecting it and the higher earner doesn't want to?

TimezoneEarth · 06/01/2026 16:38

No.
Why would you think that?

Sunriseoverthemeadow · 06/01/2026 18:21

Seriously? How stingy and selfish can you be! so just because they work full time and a bit more money they should pay 75% and you 25%??? They get more money because they work for it! If you can't afford to go on holiday with your friend and pay your fair share, then you shouldn't be going at all. You sound like an awful friend

Barrenfieldoffucks · 06/01/2026 22:41

I think the OP is the higher earner in the query

Ronnybabes · 07/01/2026 14:28

Where is the OP?.
She still has not clearly confirmed who is who.
Which leads me to believe that she is the scrounger.
Am I wrong OP?
Her silence will provide the answer. 😃

SkelatorIamNot · 07/01/2026 14:43

Each person pays their half but the budget is set at what is affordable for the lower income friend.

Going on holiday with my friend. Have booked a holiday we can both afford. She is much wealthier than me. The cost is split 50/50. When away I will stick to my budget and my friend will run any extras by me before we decide to do something. She doesn't expect me to do anything I can't afford.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 10/01/2026 15:46

"Should"? No
"Would I"? Absolutely.
I wouldn't blame anyone for not paying more, but I'd prefer my friends to have a holiday, than not have a holiday, so I'd absolutely fork out for it.

No it should be equal

Friendlygingercat · 10/01/2026 16:31

If the person who earns the higher wage wants to do things that are more expensive then there may be a case for them paying more. Lets say the part timer wants to save by going to a 4 star but the full timer insists on a 5 star. Full timer wants to experience fine dining and the ballet. Part timer does not have the budget for that.

I was once in this position where a companion (an HEO in the civil service while I was a student) wanted to go in a more classy hotel. I was quite happy with a 4 star. I just told her outright that I didnt have the budget for that. I didnt suggest she paid the difference but I put my foot down about the class of hotel we were staying in. In the end I travelled alone as we could not agree.

TrustyRusty · 10/01/2026 20:38

This is surely a joke? If you can’t afford to pay for your own holiday, you don’t go. It’s not your mate’s responsibility to pay for your holiday, regardless of how much money they have. I recommend your friend finds someone else to go on holiday with!!

I'm assuming that you realise that OP is the higher earner, right?

Sunriseoverthemeadow · 13/01/2026 16:12

The Op never stated they were the higher earner, so obviously not, like nearly every other person on this thread who has commented, I assumed they were the lesser earner
