To think loo roll is not enough

Not the nicest subject in the world -sorry!

I live abroad and bathrooms have bidees (spelling) I don’t use these, but always use wet toilet wipes which are said to be easily disposable here and not harmful to the environment
Since doing this it makes me think how normal loo roll paper is pretty gross and just can’t possibly get you properly clean 😬

No I can definitely smell unclean arse on people. It seeps into underwear and then they sit on public transport etc.. it’s rank that people are walking round with dirty bums. Then it leads to irritation then itching.

I've smelt this a few times on a busy underground when I've been sitting with someone standing in front of me.

They’re not wet wipes though, they’re biodegradable toilet wipes, you can also put them in the toilet bin then throw away and change the bin liner

They'll still block your pipes ,or your neighbours at some point unless they break down super quickly.

Duckyfondant · 04/01/2026 16:05

What's the point in having the cleanest bum in the world when everything outside your house is absolutely covered in grime and germs. Dog shit is everywhere these days. It seems like pure vanity to overly focus on your own arsehole, to the point that you'd put pooey wet wipes into the period sanitation bin in a public toilet

HangingOver · 04/01/2026 14:27

Okay sorry this is waaay TMI but... With the bum hoses.... Do you not worry that you're firing poop water towards your fanny? I used them in Indonesia and thought they were awesome but that was always at the back of my mind... Or are you somehow supposed to fire the water from the front?

Sit as normal
Stay seated on the toilet after you’ve finished.
Check the pressure first
Before aiming, briefly squeeze the trigger into the bowl to gauge water pressure. Some are very powerful.
Aim correctly
Hold the sprayer in your dominant hand
Aim from front to back (especially important for women)
Keep the nozzle a short distance away — no need to touch skin
Spray gently
Start with light pressure. Adjust angle slightly until clean. Take your time.

Fatrascal27 · 04/01/2026 16:06

Wype gel here too.

I don't know about you, but I don't use my bum to prepare food, open doors or shake hands with people.

I poo in the morning, wipe until the paper comes away clean then I get in the shower and wash my bum hole with soap.

You're not doing adulting properly then!

I’ve used toilet paper alone for almost 60 years and my bums never melted or eroded in a toxic mess. I also feel clean , tidy and no complaints from anyone privileged enough to get close and personal.

Me too. Never come across souch paranoia about cleanliness as I have on Mumsnet. I've never had skidmarks anywhere or smells and never had gastroenteritis for over 30 years.

Where do you stick your nose to smell unclean arse on people?

I feel the same. When using a hose doesn't that cause shitty water to swoosh down towards the vaginal opening?

Not unless you are spraying backwards

We don't have the sanitary issues that poorer countries might experience.

Those are infrastructural issues, not issues of personal hygiene.

I fell for the marketing of 'Wype' that kept appearing on Facebook and I really rate it.

It's basically a gel in a pump that you put onto regular toilet paper, so that after 'dry' wiping you can clean with that. It doesn't make the toilet paper soggy. I keep a pump next to each toilet in the house and there is also a travel size, so I have that in my handbag. Definitely feels cleaner than dry paper alone

Edited

I second this! The pumps are attached to a cord, so the bottle can hang from the loo roll holder. I wouldn’t go back to “just” loo roll!

My husband is a plumber and says there's no such thing as flushable wipes btw

I came here to say this! Flushsble means "it'll go down a u bend when you press the lever on the side of the cistern"..... People equate "flushable" with being pipe and sewer-safe which is something entirely different! Wipes are the work of the devil for all plumbers, drainage and sewer workers.

RessicaJabbit · 04/01/2026 15:09

But by that logic, you'd obviously be fine using a tea towel that you just used to dry your bum and then use it to immediately dry your coffee mugs...

I never dry my washing up with a tea towel. All mine goes in the dishwasher or I leave stuff to air dry on the drainer.

My tea towels are purely ornamental.

Coaltithe · 04/01/2026 16:01

I have zero problem with aiming the water there - it's where that dirty water goes afterwards that bothers me.

With a bidet, I can never get away from the feeling that I'm just spreading the germs over a wider area. That to me feels much dirtier than a wipe (never ever flushed) or Wype, or just paper.

Not really. I only use running water for bums, I never put the plug in. Then a quick swoosh afterwards and no resident germs.

Happyher · 04/01/2026 16:15

Given we used cut up newspaper or have cheap izal paper when I was a child I’m happy with my cushelle and a daily bath or shower

Ketzele · 04/01/2026 16:15

No need for wipes. Easiest is to use Wype. Cheapest is to use a perinatal care bottle to squirt warm water (a few quid off Amazon).

But really, MN is over-obsessed with this endless quest for improving hygiene. Loo roll and clean pants is also fine.

Hundslappadrifa · 04/01/2026 16:16

I just keep a bottle of bathroom cleaner and a scrub daddy by each toilet. Works fine for me 😀

Coaltithe · 04/01/2026 16:19

The bidet idea reminds me of the idea that washing raw chicken in your kitchen sink before cooking it is cleaner and more hygienic.

OK the chicken itself may be slightly cleaner afterwards than it was before, but fine droplets of salmonella-contaminated water are now all over and around your sink.

Same principle with a bidet or hose by the loo, so I'll say thanks but no thanks and save the detailed cleaning for the shower.

Exactly! I’ll stick to loo roll rather than splashing other folks disgustingness round my arse and ladybits.

The tube 😆

JellyBellybutton · 04/01/2026 16:22

A huge fan of washable Cheeky Wipes here. Used them for nappy changes, then during covid lockdowns when there was the ridiculous toilet roll shortage, i started using them too... never looked back!

So easy for young kids to wipe themselves properly too. Just water on a flannel, absolute winner.

Put used ones in a zipped wet bag hanging next to loo, then wash at the end of the week. Always a full load because we chuck in floor cloths / bath mat / dirty overalls etc too.

Yep me too. I genuinely don't know how some people get through an average day.

After experiencing the toilets in Japan 🫧🫧🫧 I think we need to up our game!

They have them even in train stations etc! I landed back at Heathrow - back to earth and smelly toilets 😂

Totally this.

I have Bile Acid Malabsorption due to Radiotherapy damage, Wype has made such a difference, I really rate it too.
