To need a coffee as soon as I wake up?

Since having third Dc, I feel tired constantly. Definitely still in a sleep deficit! I need to have a coffee as soon as I get up (I have to wait for the kettle to boil but it make it asap). I make a second one when I’ve finished the first one, they take me about 10 minutes each. That’s all the coffee I have in a day. AIBU to need coffee as soon as I wake up? The second one often needs to wait a bit as I’ll be getting Dc sorted in between but the first one is non negotiable.

I think now it is more a habit than a necessity, it's easy to get into the way of doing things mistaking them as something you need. try to get more rest if posible even if ten mins putting your feet up

BettysRoasties · 03/01/2026 16:49

Sounds like a formed habit. A bit like people who need to pee as soon as they put their key in the door. It’s a trained thing.

DameOfThrones · 03/01/2026 16:49

That's a habit.

Tea or coffee is lovely first thing in the morning but it's not a need.

TomatoSandwiches · 03/01/2026 16:52

Do you feel tired during the afternoon with this habit?
There is research that says waiting 90 mins for that hit of caffeine helps you stay more alert throughout the day as a whole.

Cobol · 03/01/2026 16:53

90 minutes 😮

What about people Who don’t drink any caffeine. Genuinely interested.

FollowSpot · 03/01/2026 17:02

I have done this since I was a student.

I make a cafetière of good coffee and drink it in bed.

Cheeseandonioncrispswithmytea · 03/01/2026 17:04

Whether it’s a need or a habit what does it matter?

every mother I know starts the day with a cuppa

just enjoy it - don’t over think it.

EchoedSilence · 03/01/2026 17:07

I can't function without a cup of tea and then a coffee in the morning. So I say crack on, OP. DP always brings me the first cup of tea in bed.

Burntt · 03/01/2026 17:09

I’m the same with tea.

tulippa · 03/01/2026 17:09

Is it harming you or preventing you from doing anything you need to do? If not, crack on.

TY78910 · 03/01/2026 17:12

It sounds like a routine you’ve built up now.
I watched a video once (who knows how true or untrue) but they said you should have a coffee 90 minutes after waking up for the caffeine to work best. Like I say, not sure of the credibility here but when I get up for work and get my first coffee at the station on the other end, it’s around 90 mins from when I wake up and I feel better than when I wake in the morning and make one just after I get up. Maybe it’s all just a placebo (like your 2 coffees in the morning) - we tell ourselves something is going to work for us and then it does.

If you’re worried about 2 coffees being too many, just think about how much the Italians drink. They seem to be fine 😂

SoapyDrama · 03/01/2026 17:20

Welcome to mumsnet, home of the chronic over thinkers, why on earth when you have 3 children to look after would you spend any headspace on when you have a cup of coffee

Totally bizarre 😂

youalright · 03/01/2026 17:25

I would imagine 90% of adults when they wake up put the kettle on i know i do i assumed this is normal

Anothercoffeex · 03/01/2026 17:49

My Coffee intake is a habit for me.
It dose not keep me awake either i drink 1-2 cups before I go to bed.
But my every morning my routine is, out of bed quick pee Coffee fags.
Then I might wake up fully.
Just to add i have wayyyyyy more than 2 coffees a day.

RachelGreep87 · 03/01/2026 17:58

You are being ridiculous, you don't "need" it.

LibbyOTV · 03/01/2026 18:04

You should wait 90 mins before having a coffee in the morning or it messes up your dopamine/cortisol or something.

ItWasTheBabycham · 03/01/2026 18:10

I’ve had to stop drinking caffeine due to medication, I drink decaf now because I love the habit of a nice hot coffee in the morning. Took me a few days of headaches but was fine after that

TittyGajillions · 03/01/2026 18:11

People have been drinking coffee first thing forever, it's absolutely fine. Honestly the things people worry about!

90 minutes 😮

I know right - Wait 90 minutes!

BoxOfCats · 03/01/2026 18:14

I’m with you. Buy a filter coffee machine with a timer, @purplespink. You can get it ready the night before so you have coffee when you wake up! And the second cup will keep warm while you drink the first!

Bordeuxkitchen · 03/01/2026 18:18

I wake up, stagger down stairs and put the coffee machine on. No one talks to me or even tries to engage me in anyway, until I’ve had my first coffee. I can then have some kind of conversation but I’m not moving or making any type of decision until I’ve had at least two cups 🤣🤣

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/01/2026 18:19

I do this, it’s not about the caffeine, it’s the ritual/process of making the coffee and then the downtime of drinking it which allows me a few minutes to wake up. I could probably mime the act of making and drinking a coffee and the effect would be exactly the same, I just need that 10 minutes without anyone really talking to me, asking me to do anything or expecting me to make any decisions.

Greenwriter76 · 03/01/2026 18:34

It’s a habit but it doesn’t matter and I think the majority of people who drink tea and coffee have one first thing. We did in my family growing up and as an adult I have a teasmade by my bed which goes on as soon as I wake up. I have some water first tho.
On school run days I have my second (decaf coffee) with breakfast before leaving the house, then a latte from our coffee machine when I get back to start work/ chores.
On weekends I have my machine latte as my second drink, with breakfast, then take it upstairs to get ready.
Through the day I generally drink decaf tea and coffee but do have another caffeinated sometimes.

vanillalattes · 03/01/2026 18:36

Like everyone is saying, it's just a habit. Not a bad one or anything, but a habit nonetheless. I do the same!
