To need a coffee as soon as I wake up?

Since having third Dc, I feel tired constantly. Definitely still in a sleep deficit! I need to have a coffee as soon as I get up (I have to wait for the kettle to boil but it make it asap). I make a second one when I’ve finished the first one, they take me about 10 minutes each. That’s all the coffee I have in a day. AIBU to need coffee as soon as I wake up? The second one often needs to wait a bit as I’ll be getting Dc sorted in between but the first one is non negotiable.

I’m with you. Buy a filter coffee machine with a timer, @purplespink. You can get it ready the night before so you have coffee when you wake up! And the second cup will keep warm while you drink the first!

Exactly thats what i do and put it on timer so its ready when i am up,no way would i wait 5 min to make it

ChopstickNovice · 03/01/2026 19:04

I never feel awake until after my first cup of tea!

Luckyforsome23 · 03/01/2026 19:05

I make the first two cups of tea of the day at the same time but the second one is in the thermos cup so it is still warm in an hour when I get to drink it!

ChekhovsMum · 03/01/2026 19:10

90 minutes’ wait for a coffee sounds like exactly the sort of self-flagellating twattery printed by the likes of the Daily Mail, just so that irritating PILs, colleagues and people with nothing to do can watch you having your first cup of the day and say ‘Ooh, you know they say you shouldn’t have coffee for 90 minutes after waking up. Ooh yes, it ruins your cortisol and your dopamine apparently’ and then have a little self-satisfied grin to themselves after their eight undisturbed hours of sleep and their lovely quiet morning where all they had to do was get dressed and then deadhead the geraniums or whatever.
So, so little pleasure is left to you as a mother, especially of young kids. If you can’t have a fucking coffee when you wake up, what the fuck is the point of anything?

Gingerwarthog · 03/01/2026 19:11

Not unreasonable OP.
Totally normal. Same in my house and I have a pot of coffee every morning with colleagueswhen I get into work.

Gingerwarthog · 03/01/2026 19:14

@ChekhovsMum
totally agree. Dentist once told me that coffee was ‘one of the finer things in life’ - I said it’s a basic human right.

Cherrysherbet · 03/01/2026 19:14

I start work at 6:30am. I purposely get up an extra 30mins early to have a nice hot coffee and wake up slowly. I don’t feel right if I skip my morning coffee. It’s the thought of it that gets me out of bed!

Dolamroth · 03/01/2026 19:33

I have a coffee and a tea which I make at the same time. Drink coffee first, then tea.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 03/01/2026 19:39

Has to be tea for me. Coffee after I’m up but tea in bed

user1471453601 · 03/01/2026 19:46

I have one small cup of coffee a day.

I really, really don't like it if anyone talks to me before I've had my coffee. 5 minutes is all I take.

just leave me alone, for those 5 minutes.

zebrastripesarefun · 03/01/2026 19:54

First cuppa in the morning is the best and tastiest

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/01/2026 19:56

I have to have a strong black coffee when I wake up

honeyfox · 03/01/2026 19:57

I need three large cups of tea in the first two hours of a workday, I'll have a coffee at 11 but that's generally me done with coffee. I can't drink tea after 6pm, it's just weird to me.

FastFood · 03/01/2026 20:02

I need coffee as soon as I wake up (well, ok, 10 mins after I wake up and have a shower) and I have no issue with that.
Life is way too short to wait 90 mins to drink coffee. I drink probably 4 coffees a day, and I sleep like a corpse.
I am addicted to coffee in the sense that if I don't have cafeine, I'll get headaches. Fine by me, I have no intention to cure myself from that addiction.

Whether it’s a need or a habit what does it matter?

every mother I know starts the day with a cuppa

just enjoy it - don’t over think it.

Yes, I am thoroughly failing to see the problem here? Don't most people start the day with tea/coffee? As vices go, it's not a big one.

GrannyTeapot · 03/01/2026 20:17

It’s not the caffeine, I went decaf when my youngest was a baby years ago and still put the kettle on as my first thing every morning, I have two cups of tea before the school run every morning, and on a morning when all is running smoothly I manage three 😆. It’s warmth, comfort, ritual. The children all love their cups of tea first thing too.

Joystir59 · 03/01/2026 22:37

I've had to give up my morning ritual of a good coffee because it's not good for my kidneys. Nothing can replace it. Bereft.

HostaCentral · 03/01/2026 22:48

DH brings me a coffee in bed every morning...... I wake up to it's aroma. I would be very grumpy without it. If he oversleeps or is away I make my own, but akways take it back to bed.

Myfridgeiscool · 03/01/2026 22:51

First cuppa is with breakfast in bed. Proper coffee from a cafetière, CBA with the pod nonsense which isn’t punchy enough for me. Second cup is after the dog walk. The day then starts!

cupfinalchaos · 03/01/2026 22:55

I have a double espresso every morning at the same time. If I ever don’t, I get a headache in the afternoon. There are worse addictions.. my grandma was the same and she lived to 95.

CuppaTandBicky · 03/01/2026 22:59

This is just normal and anyone who doesn't need a coffee or two first thing is just weird.... Surely?

Kitterkitkat · 03/01/2026 23:04

Seems fine, enjoy your coffee. Have a sip of water first whilst you wait for it to be ready.

SixtySomething · 03/01/2026 23:41

I can't see anything wrong with this at all.
You're energising yourself as you're exhausted.
I'm sure you will cut back once you get the chance to rest more.
Not worth worrying about.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 04/01/2026 00:04

I can't find my own arse before I've had two cups of coffee.

ResusciAnnie · 04/01/2026 00:09

Surely everyone starts their day with a cuppa?? Honestly I’m going to ask all my friends, surely! Can’t just be mine and DH’s families. So so so normal and reasonable!
