Is it the begining of the end for Weight loss injections?

BeginingoftheendforWLI · 02/01/2026 18:54

Just watched a report on BBC news, they did an item on a woman who had type 2 diabetes and was prescribed Mounjaro, doctors were impressed she managed to come off insulin within a month. She had some weightloss and now goes to the gym regularly.

Her doctor admitted that there was widespread concern in the medical field that people who were buying it privately for cosmetic reasons not for medical reasons could face some consequences in the future such as muscle growth and bone degeneration and lack of nutrition - they simply don't have this data at present.

Feel like this is going to be big news in the foreseeable future.

What are you on about? You watched a report about a WLI success story and from that concluded that they are actually a terrible thing that will soon be stopped? Do you normally struggle with comprehension?

robinsinthesnow · 02/01/2026 18:56

Here we go

Motnight · 02/01/2026 18:57

Ooh great another click bait thread re WLI!

DollopOfFun · 02/01/2026 18:57

Lol no.

miamo12 · 02/01/2026 18:58

You obviously didn’t see the story. The doctor said that it worked for short periods to reverse medical conditions when the person was significantly overweight, worries were for those not significantly overweight and not eating enough.

Shitzngiggles · 02/01/2026 19:00

Another day, another WLI bashing thread.

Mounjaroversary · 02/01/2026 19:02

Wise up!!!!
I've lost 6 stone in MJ. Reversed diabetes, high BP, potential heart disease, never felt as good as info right now.
Scaremongering doesn't work, my muscles are great, and my autoimmune disease has completely reversed.

ColdAsAWitches · 02/01/2026 19:03

It's the beginning of the end, but only in the sense that the injections will be replaced by pills this year. One brand has already been approved by the FDA, and another is expected to be within 6 months.

EdgeOfThirtySeven · 02/01/2026 19:04

You what? You wish! Yet another person who resents people losing weight on WLI.

Muscle loss can happen with any diet. And we're women. We deal with natural bone weakness by doing weight bearing exercise.

chellewillnotbebeaten · 02/01/2026 19:04

I agree - admittedly I don’t need wli but I have been very overweight in the past and would have probably snapped them up at the time - early to mid twenties I fried every fad diet, pharmacy only shakes, everything (heartbreak diet solved the issue in the end haha) BUT I do think they are poorly regulated/controlled…… people are injecting insulin when they are not diabetic! That’s so dangerous! (I work in healthcare and have seen devastating effects and death from incorrect insulin management for people that actually are diabetic). Then again, I smoke and ecig and I’m sure in years to come there will be consequences with that.

ShesTheAlbatross · 02/01/2026 19:05

I don’t see why a concern that some people might take a drug despite it not being prescribed (which I’m sure is happening and may well have medical consequences for those individuals) would mean the “beginning of the end” for the drugs as a whole. That just has no basis in any kind of logic.

MigGirl · 02/01/2026 19:06

I am concerned about the long term implications of these drugs. I agree they are a great tool and work really well for a lot of people, but I don't agree thay they should be available over the Internet and from online pharmacies. They are a medical drug and they should be monitored by a doctor, weather that be the NHS or private.

And yes I'm aware that would make them more expensive then they are now.

You may work in healthcare but you clearly have NO clue at all about weight loss injections …
it is not insulin !!!!

It's not insulin... I think if you don't know anything about them that's fine but maybe reserve judgement?

Cue, the fake concern......

Clefable · 02/01/2026 19:10

Christ alive. Not another one. The amount of ignorance and lack of critical thinking on here and elsewhere is depressing.

Schoolchoicesucks · 02/01/2026 19:10

Did the report OP watched raise concerns about effects on the muscles or bones of the person who had reversed their diabetes?

WLI are not insulin so I am confused why someone working in health care is mentioning the impact of non-diabetics injecting insulin.

There may well be some adverse long term health issues that we don't yet know about. But the medical evidence is that doctors and researchers believe the positive impacts outweigh the potential risks for those who meet the criteria for prescription - those who are obese and/or overweight with a co-morbid health condition.

Scary isn't it? I presume they aren't a HCP though as that would be even worse.

If you are "concerned" dont take them. Simple.
Are you cobcerned about paracetamol use as well? Because there are more hospital admissions for that than for GLPs

chelle who 'works in health care' and is talking bollocks or just confused.
I use insulin [type 1] but not wli, don't need it.

You do know that mounjaro/ozempic/wegovy are not insulin?

Hankunamatata · 02/01/2026 19:19

It's like all medication. It has side effects and those risk side effects need to be balanced with the therapeutic effect.

This is a WLI criticism thread. Actual research and proved facts not welcome.

Yep, I wasnt exoecting it to reduce autoimmune sympotoms and inflamation. A nice wee extra bonus.
