Is it the begining of the end for Weight loss injections?

Just watched a report on BBC news, they did an item on a woman who had type 2 diabetes and was prescribed Mounjaro, doctors were impressed she managed to come off insulin within a month. She had some weightloss and now goes to the gym regularly.

Her doctor admitted that there was widespread concern in the medical field that people who were buying it privately for cosmetic reasons not for medical reasons could face some consequences in the future such as muscle growth and bone degeneration and lack of nutrition - they simply don't have this data at present.

Feel like this is going to be big news in the foreseeable future.

So tell us about you….are you a fatty who is feeling under pressure as people become thinner around you or are you a thinny who is worried that they will no longer be able to feel superior around the fatties?!!

Can you people not actually read this post?!

Edit - apologies, I assumed if was sarcasm/facetious but on reading it again I’m not sure…

A blue Peter badge for you

Well committing to actual lifestyle change is surely better than injecting my self with substances that have not been looked at long term.

SlashBeef · 02/01/2026 20:16

I think some people (you?) would love this to be the case.

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:11

I didn't say I was thin. I said I don't think I am obese.

Obese is the highest weight range possible

A size 14 is not obese. Should I be in the same category as someone who is 28 stone?

Someone who is 28 stone is morbidly obese. A size 14 is obese for some people, it is for me and I’m the same height as you. I was obese at 21/2 stone overweight and I look bloody shocking in photos when I look back. I’m now a size 10 and I look much better, but I am far from skinny.

The problem is that there are so many morbidly obese people nowadays that many of those who are merely obese live in denial of how big they are because they see themselves as slim in comparison.

Livelovebehappy · 02/01/2026 20:17

My thoughts exactly. It’s going to be one of those where 5 to 10 years from now, it’s going to become apparent the long term effects on health, and they will be banned for none medical situations. I was thinking about doing it a couple of months ago, but the uncertainty of long term effects on my body/health put me off (I’m very risk adverse!). Same reason why I didn’t have the covid vaccine. The vaccine was thrown together in such a short time, that I just didn’t trust that it was safe long term.

Again good for you, but let adults do what they choose for themselves, no one’ says YOU have to take it.

Again I don't think Im thin. However, I am absolutely sure that I am not obese.

I am thinner than a lot of people that I work with, I am thinner than a woman I know that plays sport at a high level.

I don't think BMI online calculators are accurate.

usedtobeaylis · 02/01/2026 20:22

Who could ever have guessed this would turn into yet another thread of people asserting their moral superiority over those who use Mounjaro.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2026 20:22

@MyCatStoleSausages notice I said “legitimate”. Those people are illegally accessing POM. Individual pharmacies should be sanctioned if they can’t show they have robust processes for checking eligibility. There is not the capacity for physical pharmacies to check the height and weight of people in person and it does not have to be necessary to do that. It can be done remotely with sufficiently robust processes. That is not a reason to restrict access to medication for the vast majority who are legitimately accessing it.

Speaking personally, I would not have gone in person to be weighed and measured, and that would have been an unnecessary barrier to me accessing an appropriate mediation legitimately.

Agree with you, someone talking sense. Its well known people are wearing numerous clothes and putting weights in their pockets. The medical companies don't care as they are making billions.

I genuinely wish I thought of this. I am extremely overweight but a couple of digits off the required number.

Handy tip.

Youdontseehow · 02/01/2026 20:24

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 19:51

I agree. Also, I feel it is not researched enough at all.

They currently sell WLI over the counter to nearly everyone over a certain weight

I took Mounjaro for six months. It made me so severely sick. I had to stop.

I'm not saying that there is something inherently wrong with mounjaro, just that it didnt work with my body.

They should research it more, and not just sell a strong drug to absolutely everyone over a certain weight

Edited

It’s not over the counter though - it requires a prescription.

I was on a low carb, 1200 calorie per day weight loss regime for two years with no actual weight loss. You wrongly assume that all people who are overweight have a shit diet and don’t do any exercise. That really isn’t the case. After 20 years of high cholesterol (even when I was a slim size 8), it took less than six weeks of Mounjaro to get it under control. I had Seborrheic Dermatitis so bad that my dermotologist said that it looked like I had been burned. Six years of hell with it and at some points, I don’t want to leave my house. Completely under control now thanks to Mounjaro. The plantar fasciitis that I had for three years, completely gone. My body wasn’t functioning properly and now it is, thanks to this drug.

WLIs are revolutionising the treatment of obesity and obesity-related conditions such as diabetes. The only issue is around unregulated use which is the same as any other medication.

I suspect as they become more widely available on the NHS, the market for private treatment will shrink rapidly and the companies currently pushing them hard will lose interest as there won’t be enough profit to make it worthwhile. Once they are not being aggressively marketed, inappropriate use is likely to be less of an issue.

This class of drugs has been around for years so it’s highly unlikely that there is going to be any thalidomide-style side effect disaster waiting around the corner. Sorry to disappoint you, OP, but maybe you should instead focus your thoughts on why you REALLY feel this way about WLIs and what that says about you as a person.

This!
These drugs have been around for a long time.

It’s not over the counter though - it requires a prescription.

But it doesnt require an in person consultation.

This is how I bought Mounjaro. I applied online on one of the UK pharmacy websites.

I quickly filled in a form online. It was approved the next day, and I picked up mounjaro the next week. I didn't have to speak to anyone.

I made lifestyle changes and it wasn't enough. Exactly the same as when I made changes to deal with anxiety and it wasn't enough.

Some people need more. That's all there is to it.

PandoraSocks · 02/01/2026 20:27

I don't use WLI but a couple of my friends do. They have lost weight, inches off their waists and seen massive improvements in their blood pressure. All those things will improve their health massively and I am thrilled for them.

What would speaking to someone have changed?

What would speaking to someone have changed?

They could have looked at me and asked me about my current health.

I just had to quickly tick boxes and I was given mounjaro straight away.

Also when you apply online, they ask you to send in a photo of your weight on a weighing scales. I didnt fake my photo, but it would be so extremely easy for anyone to fake that photo online.

👏

The improvements in my health, from being able to sleep lying down like a normal person, to being able to put weight on my feet like a normal person when I get up in the morning, have been life changing. Why people can't just be happy about that I don't know.

The tick boxes that... ask about you current health? In 10 months I've never yet been able to get Mounjaro without answering questions about my current health.

Because everyone is different.Everyone reacts to drugs differently.

I am not thinking abut your personal situation. I am thinking about MY personal situation. I became very sick on Mounjaro. I have stopped taking it, I still feel extremely weak, and I have very low energy. I have also developed an eye twitch. My hands also have a weaker grip. I am concerned about what I did to myself

Jackiepumpkinhead · 02/01/2026 20:32

ColinOfficeTrolley · 02/01/2026 20:05

Yawn OP.

Another person who doesn't understand WLI and shows faux concern about the future of all wli takers.

People who make posts like this, I believe it's usually someone who's mate/family member has dropped a load of weight after wli's and has been getting positive attention and it pisses them off.

Always the green eyed monster lurking as they think it's 'cheating' and it really gets under their skin 😂.

Posts ALWAYS dressed up as concern.

👏🏻 and those people always look ‘terrible’! It’s so boring

Look you’re talking to someone with pcos. Weight loss drugs are great but I’m afraid some people see them as this perfect panacea. Committing to being on weight loss drugs for life is a very very big decision. I am not able to eat carbs as it completely messes up my weight loss. I am happy people have found things which work for them. I have a friend who has been in and out of hospital with digestive issues as a result of the jabs. I wish everyone well with their healthy journey. But I think it’s dangerous to view the jabs as some sort of shortcut to health.

RhaenysRocks · 02/01/2026 20:33

Tattiana · 02/01/2026 19:58

I mean I’m sure there are many people doing it for health reasons but I think in the main it is absolutely about being thin/cosmetic. I know LOADS of people on WLIs who perhaps needed to lost a stone or two, but they certainly weren’t life-threateningly obese.

Then they have lied and falsified their info or are buying from illegal sources. If someone only needs to lose 1-2 stone they will not of an obese BMI. The OP keeps talking about diabetes Vs cosmetic reasons, as though there is nothing else. So many other conditions go along with obesity that can be helped by losing the 3+ stone you'd need. Most people on WLI have tried many other methods ..no-one is enjoying spunking £150-200 pm on jabs. I AM enjoying, for the first time in 20 years seeing results from the constant monitoring of dietary intake that is no different now than it was when I was doing it "properly".
