How old? My 8 year old still does half birthday and excitement… as an adult, poss few days/week before?

DappledThings · 01/01/2026 15:27

Never. I don't like anyone knowing when it is.

Even for those who do I can't recall it generally coming up in that format. Only in a specific "I'm going to go to X restaurant for my birthday in three weeks" style.

Grumblies · 01/01/2026 15:28

A few weeks before at most. Although it's rare as an adult I'd find myself in a situation where I'd be talking about it unless it was a big birthday. Maybe a quick staffroom chat to say I was going out for a meal at the weekend for my birthday but it wouldn't come up frequently enough to mention it much.

Screenager · 01/01/2026 15:29

Probs about a week before.

chisping · 01/01/2026 15:29

I would never mention my birthday, even on the day.

Shedmistress · 01/01/2026 15:30

I wouldn't. I don't think I did even as a child.

ResusciAnnie · 01/01/2026 15:30

Well DD is 4 in April and has been planning her celebrations for a couple of months now.

I as a full grown adult don’t tend to do a countdown. If it comes up in conversation I’ll say ‘it’s my birthday on Wednesday’ etc. So I guess I’m aware of it maybe a week I advance.

Christmaseree · 01/01/2026 15:30

Three or four weeks.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 01/01/2026 15:30

As an adult? Never.

topcat2014 · 01/01/2026 15:31

Only at the point of bringing cakes into work

mondaytosunday · 01/01/2026 15:34

I only mention it if I’m arranging a night out to my friends. Who are you mentioning it to?

Summerbay23 · 01/01/2026 15:35

As an adult a week before, purely as might book a restaurant or something. I wouldn’t actually mention it to anyone other than DH though as in “do you fancy going to xxx next week”.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 01/01/2026 15:38

I wouldn't think about it until a few days before but wouldn't think to mention it to anyone unless they brought it up.

Miranda65 · 01/01/2026 15:40

Never. I don't tell anyone. I have friends who have known me for years who have no idea of the date of my birthday.

Christmaseree · 01/01/2026 15:42

For the people who never mention it or think it about it don’t you ever book a birthday meal out, have a party or a few people over, book a night in a hotel or go to a show etc etc for your birthday?

Blingismything · 01/01/2026 15:43

Never

miamo12 · 01/01/2026 15:44

As an adult, never, I would only mention it on the day unless I’m having a party (not since I was 18) in which case sending invites out. A month out? Perhaps if you are 7

squashyhat · 01/01/2026 15:44

I don't have to. Everyone knows when it is because I share it with Someone Very Famous.

TwistedWonder · 01/01/2026 15:44

Agree. I’d only mention to friends if there’s a night out planned. Otherwise not at all

I just wait FB to let people know

No. Might have a few drinks with mates the nearest Saturday but that’s about it.

No never.
My adult DC might want us to do a family meal but I would never initiate it nor would I remind them my birthday was coming up.
I never mentioned it at work, I don't mention it at any social groups or sports groups that I belong to.

Wobblylegs1 · 01/01/2026 15:48

I start thinking of myself as my next age about three months beforehand.
But I won’t mention my birthday to anyone or start to make plans until a month beforehand, max.

LeonMccogh · 01/01/2026 15:51

Oh no! Birthdays definitely aren’t allowed on MN donchaknow!?

Why do you need to talk about it?
