Me personally a month before however I know some people do it from the half way point

Well, we have a loose agreement as to where we're going this year for our birthdays and our anniversary; but that's not the same thing.

I might consider it "almost my birthday" 3-7 days beforehand. A few weeks beforehand if someone asked my age I'd probably say "x at the end of the month" so one might possibly argue that that's when the countdown starts in my head.

I'm actually much more likely to think "it's almost H's birthday" because I need to do things in advance for that. Plus his is near the beginning of the month so doesn't get the automatic prompt a few weeks before that mine does.

SeaviewCafe · 01/01/2026 15:53

Our family discusses birthdays regularly, because we like to plan activities & holidays we'll in advance to get better deals.

6 months or more in advance

AgnesMcDoo · 01/01/2026 15:55

As an adult - the night before

as a child - about 6 months before

For the people who never mention it or think it about it don’t you ever book a birthday meal out, have a party or a few people over, book a night in a hotel or go to a show etc etc for your birthday?

I may do one or two of those things (the meal, the show). But those people who would come are few and know it’s my birthday. I haven’t had a birthday party since I was about 10. I’ll be 64 next.

In what context? I don't think I've ever said it,everyone that would be the slightest bit interested knows when it is and I can't think of why I'd be telling anyone else

Why would anyone be saying it six months beforehand?

Parratin · 01/01/2026 15:57

As an adult? Never.

Your birthday is your birthday. The other days are not your birthday. It's not some kind of special cultural festival like Christmas - I might say "it's nearly Christmas," but I don't think I'd ever say, "it's nearly my birthday."

I might say to a kid, "it's nearly your birthday," because... it's a kid.

MySilentLions · 01/01/2026 15:57

About a week before. Time for DH to get organised with ordering a present and booking a table.

But you wouldn't be saying to those people it's nearly your birthday would you? Id they are planning things they clearly know when it is

Itiswhysofew · 01/01/2026 15:59

It wouldn't cross my mind to inform anyone.

What do you actually say to people?

How old are you?

Arlanymor · 01/01/2026 16:01

It's not nearly your birthday if it's a month away is it?

HolidayHattie · 01/01/2026 16:01

Generally I don't mention it, but in the context of "It's almost my birthday so I've treated myself to X as a present to myself", maybe a month before. DH and I don't really do presents, we just get ourselves something if we want it.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/01/2026 16:03

Id find it very strange if an adult told me it was ‘nearly’ their birthday with more than a week or two to go, the exception probably being a milestone birthday eg: if someone said ‘I’m nearly 40’ with a month or two to go I would kind of get that.

YetAnotherWannabeWriter · 01/01/2026 16:08

Never. My close family and important friends know.
I'm not bothered about announcing it to the world.

YetAnotherWannabeWriter · 01/01/2026 16:10

Are you asking because you want to give people a heads-up to buy you a gift or send a card?

The only reason to tell anyone is if you are having a celebration party and they will be invited so a 'save the date' message.

WhereIsMyLight · 01/01/2026 16:20

My birthday falls near a bank holiday so if it comes up in conversation about what we’re doing, I will say if there are any birthday plans. I guess people would start asking about bank holiday plans a month before, maybe 3 weeks before but I wouldn’t say it’s nearly my birthday. If I was asking someone their availability to go for drinks etc it would probably be about 3 weeks (which I’d do for trying to arrange something anyway).

I start telling DH what I would like about 4-6 weeks before and I tell him where I want to have a meal about 3 weeks before then he can get booked in. I don’t tell him it’s nearly my birthday though, he does know but that’s when I start thinking about it.

No because my birthday is 25th December so unless I want to pay a fortune for a hotel it's not an option. The same for going out for a meal on/near my birthday....have you tried booking somewhere that doesn't serve a Christmas themed meal for less than a party of 8 in December? It's like looking for a unicorn.

The reason I don't mention mine anymore is because I get the same reply every single time "December 25th? That's Christmas Day!" Yeah Nigel, after 60 years on this planet I've worked that out for myself ta.

I don't have to. Everyone knows when it is because I share it with Someone Very Famous.

Me too. 😄

I find Indian restaurants a good option for a non festive menu in December.

I like Indian food but it wouldn't be something I'd pay restaurant prices for or consider it a special meal out really.

TomatoSandwiches · 01/01/2026 16:36

We don't mention birthdays for the adults tbh but we mention who's birthday is next after we've celebrated someone else's if that makes sense.
Otherwise about 2 or 3 months before and then again about 2 weeks before usually.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 01/01/2026 16:42

I get excited when I see perishable food items with the same use-by date as my birthday.

I don't expect other people to get excited, but it's nice to get presents from DD's as they're always thoughtful and original, which makes me feel special.

I also like getting older.

OddBoots · 01/01/2026 16:52

A regular birthday, about a week before.

If it is a round number or otherwise significant one I might start referring to myself as (for example) 'nearly 50' about 3 months before.

No. I've never done this. Never had a big group of friends when younger and single parented for over a decade so I don't have the time or energy to go anywhere anyway.

What's an example of a conversation in which you'd say, oh it's nearly my birthday?

I can't think of how that would come about
