Disclaimer: Not 100% serious at all 😏

Mine would be to ban repeat offenders who don't return to the threads they start.

A mahooosive multicoloured sticky banner reminding OPs to include their kid's ages in the opening post, as it's nearly always relevant.

What would you add/remove/change?

OP posts:
GCSEmum2025 · 01/01/2026 11:23

Make it less hostile to Black women.

DameOfThrones · 01/01/2026 11:23

ResusciAnnie · 01/01/2026 11:21

I would also ban ‘gently’, ‘discuss’ and ‘can I ask you to’ no you fucking can’t ask me to, random internet stranger!

And

"So I ask you dear reader"

I think name changing is good, as long as you can't change mid-thread -which you can't AFAIK. I have shared various things under different names that would easily out me if they were pieced together. I feel confident discussing difficult things knowing that I can be truly anonymous.

Totally agree! Name-changing isn’t always done for nefarious reasons.

You can be on a long running thread for a certain illness for example and not wish to be identified when you post on a relationship thread for example.

StarsTwinklingPomanders · 01/01/2026 11:14

If someone started a clearly light hearted thread like someone did recently about a ten bird roast i would have a special team to police it to keep miserable joyless posters off it and let the rest of us have a much needed laugh.
Laughter and fun are huge healers and many of us nees that.
It's supposed rto be a supportive site
The ...troll comments , is this reel this isn't real are pathetic fuck off !!

Completely the opposite, I'd ban those stupid kind of threads where the OP is too try hard and clearly made up or at least move them to a dedicated topic that could be hidden.

Jbum · 01/01/2026 11:32

Strip it back to what it started off as, a parenting forum so delete the ability to have boards about politics, rf etc.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 01/01/2026 11:35

I'd prevent anyone from talking about their hobby, unless they explain what the hobby actually is- if it's central to the whole post..Not too sure it's the end of the world, just faintly annoying..

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2026 11:41

I’d add the strap line.

”Be as cunty as you want, we won’t delete your post”.

That’d up the entertainment value of the site.

I would ban lazy journalists using MN threads for their next bit of clickbait, as well as stop the awful practice of MN actually posting threads on their own Facebook page. I think it's disgraceful that people post on MN, only to have their thread splashed across other media, where the audience might be much bigger and broader, and contain people they know aren't on MN but might now see the thread.

But that's the internet, that's how it works. MN is a public forum; once you type something and press post, you've published it and it's available to the whole world, if they care to seek it out.

Journalists report on what's going on in the world, so if a Mumsnet user creates a public post that's essentially saying, "hey, world, check out what's happening to me!", then it qualifies as something that can be reported on. It's true that some outlets don't act responsibly when reporting on threads, which is bad – but also, users should be more aware of what it means to publish a post.

There's literally a childfree board https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/childfree-mumsnetters

Are you saying that the Conception board should go too?

I suspect they'd allow the conception board to stay but only for people TTC second/third/fourth children.

That kind of poster is also likely to think they're being incredibly clever and not at all tedious by reminding people the site is called MUMSnet, so mainly to annoy them I'd change the name. Peoplenet perhaps.

JamesClyman · 01/01/2026 11:57

We'd be able to delete our own posts without going through MNHQ.

manicpixieschemegirl · 01/01/2026 12:03

Impose a limit on the number of emojis allowed per post. I scroll past any responses that are littered with 😅🤷‍♀️💯🥰😂 as it feels like I’ve unwittingly joined a local Facebook group.

Tryingatleast · 01/01/2026 12:05

Just wanted to lodge a ‘please don’t bring back the laughing emoji’ request, it’s horrible to look at your notifications and see ‘such and such laughed at your comment on ‘how I feel about my dad being dead’ or the like. I had a number of laughing ones, particularly when I commented on a post defending a man who asked if people minded him being on mn, which is when I got loads of horrible dms from women and men! That is also when I had to name change after ten years on mn (hence I’d request for name changing not to be taken away!

I’d also say I’ve rarely seen hth used in a nice way and say people who use read the room when someone is asking about money should be reminded that mn is for everyone (not well off but I find it sad that people who are are chased out if they’ve money worries!)

StarsTwinklingPomanders · 01/01/2026 12:05

@FreedomForFree really ?

King Arthur's burnt cakes ,Brian's yoni ?
Ban them ? Then we wouldn't have thread classics?

Mumsent is supposed to be a supportive site for mums and laughter and having fun is hugely beneficial in many ways
If you don't feel you want to be light hearted ,don't go to the threads and certainly do not ruin them for the more light hearted fun lovers here

There are millions of hugely serious and depressing threads....go there .

Been a while since I’ve seen “Brian the handyman” mentioned.

Troll hunting would be a bannable offence.
One warning, then gone.
Just because something doesn’t fit your life or experience doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

• Using posting history as a weapon wouldn’t be allowed.
People change. Situations change. Someone’s past posts shouldn’t be dragged up to undermine what they’re saying now.

• Name-change exposing would be an instant ban.
If someone has changed their name, there’s a reason.
Even hints like “are you the poster with the minibus and four stepchildren?” shouldn’t be acceptable. It’s still exposing.

• Following posters across boards because you’ve decided you dislike them would be against the rules.
That’s not debate — it’s fixation.

• Nastiness would be treated as nastiness.
Having a different opinion is fine. Being cruel isn’t.
“Tough love”, “no sugar coating”, or “just being honest” wouldn’t be a free pass to be hostile.

• Pile-ons would be moderated properly.
Anyone joining in once a thread turns into a dog-pile would be removed from the thread, and repeat behaviour would lead to bans.
MN works best when people feel safe to post honestly.
Once people are scared of being hunted, exposed or piled on, all you get left with is performance — not real discussion

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 01/01/2026 12:22

Id remove the ability to post any emoji that aren't the MN ones. Hmm is my absolute favourite

Dragonflytamer · 01/01/2026 09:21

I'd ban posters who don't have the comprehension skills to understand a post if there is a single spelling/grammar error.

I'd ban non-parents - what on earth are they doing on mumsnet?

I agree. I don’t understand why a site created for mums has to be used by people who weren’t the target audience.

skyeisthelimit · 01/01/2026 12:31

I would

get rid of all moving adverts, especially the stupid ones with the slidy line that moves with your mouse

ban all the nasty posters who pile on to an OP and disrail the thread. MN claim that they want a nicer environment, but haven't seen a huge improvement yet.

ban the C... word. I reported it for being in a thread title and MN did nothing.

Phial · 01/01/2026 12:37

I'd like it to say at the top how long the poster has been on mumsnet. Name changing is fine, but if someone is using a new name, it would be good to know "member since 2009". (Maybe that's too outing ..."member for more than 5 years" ?)
I would also not allow people to start threads until they had engaged on another thread. Or can't start a thread until you've been a member for a certain length of time (even 24 hours).

That would stop people/me getting sucked into threads about the mental load and how awful it is to have a son by people posting in bad faith.

All the more reason to make the laugh reaction 'opt in', so users can toggle them on/off in their settings.

I would default so that new paragraphs start with a capital letter. It drives me BONKERS.

BlueSlate · 01/01/2026 12:54

I'd ban everyone who uses 'intimacy' as a euphemism for sex.

Especially when it's used in the context of "having intimacy' when someone means 'having sex'.

Mine automatically capitalises

Does it @FreedomForFree????

Oh now I’m extra annoyed 😂

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 01/01/2026 12:58

Id also ban new users who complain it isnt like reddit. Use reddit then!
