To think my house looks empty and boring now that the decs are down and I have a sudden urge to buy a lot of house stuff?

Decs only came down today so it's my first time sitting in my living room with it back in it's default state.

It suddenly looks so bland and boring 😭 I know I'll get used to it again but it's making me want to go online and buy loads of crap for my living room.

Anyone else feel like this when the decs come down?

The older I get the sadder I feel taking my Christmas decorations down. The tree with its twinkling lights makes me feel so happy and I feel my decorations are the best they’ve ever looked this year. My house looks and feels so cosy and comforting.. I don’t want it to be stark for gloomy January 😩

Leave them up until candkemass!!

onceorthrice · 01/01/2026 02:05

You're supposed to take them down on 5th January.

Mmmfloorpie · 01/01/2026 02:14

Liftedmeup · 01/01/2026 01:26

Well, why did you take them down so early? We’re only halfway through Christmas time. Baffling!

Baffling 😂

Ah Mumsnet…

Absolutely flabbergasted!

SameShitDifferentDate · 01/01/2026 02:15

Nope. I'm glad to get my space and my uncluttered decor back.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 01/01/2026 02:16

You didn't need to take down your decorations yet. There's still 5 days of Christmas left.

Itiswhysofew · 01/01/2026 02:24

I love it when the decs come down. I'll be doing mine today.

Discoprincess6 · 01/01/2026 02:39

I know I hate it. I’m gutted that it’s all down. I genuinely love my tree, it was so pretty and sparkly.

i had an armchair where the tree was but it went the tip right before Christmas, as my cat used it as her bed and scratching post. Blue velvet and cat fur don’t mix. Anyway the tree replaced it. But now the tree is gone I’ve got big empty space in living room.

skoosh · 01/01/2026 02:47

It always looks a bit bare when the decorations come down but it will be fine in a few days. Ours are staying up for a few days yet though. They are only special because they are up once a year.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 01/01/2026 02:53

I've binned the Christmas cards, but I still have my tree up and outside lights. I didn't go so crazy with decorations this year so there's less to put away, it's quite a nice thought

ZenNudist · 01/01/2026 03:02

You can't whinge when you have taken them down early. I'm really looking forward to 6 more days of my tree. It's a huge real one lit by 1000 lights that fade from white to warm light. It will be down just before epiphany when I do a house blessing ceremony. Even atheist DH joins in.

Maybe next year observe more traditional Christmas and enjoy Dec's into January. Don't put them up 1 December!

Christmastide runs to 5 January. It's not baffling if you observe Christian Christmas. For Catholics Christmas is an "octave ": 8 feast days from 25 December to 1 January. I shall be at mass tomorrow.

notlisteningwithmother · 01/01/2026 08:55

We won't be packing away the Christmas decorations until twelfth night. But I try to keep some of the warmth that I associate with Christmas and midwinter - candles, lighting / fairy lights that feels cozy when it's dark outside, baking that fills the house with the smell of warming spices, snuggling up in an armchair in warm PJs with a mug of ginger tea. DH couldn't care less and probably doesn't even notice! It all gradually disappears as the longer days of spring approach.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2026 08:57

Agree about the emptiness. Resist any urge to spend though.

I'm prob the odd one out here but I love how spacious and tidy it looks when they come down. Dont get me wrong, I also love the decorations but there's something lovely about the clean fresh look afterwards 🤣🤣😅

That's exactly how I feel, I love a good post Christmas clean house.

Grapewrath · 01/01/2026 09:00

I take mine down the day after Boxing Day as I find them over stimulating and annoying- my house has a lot of candies and fairy lights anyway so I don’t find it boring and enjoy the space- OP
yiu could try some fairy lights or lamps if you’re missing the cosy vibes

Tesco had the £1 daffs on Saturday. I’m getting some as soon as I’m in there next.

This is exactly what I'm going to do - the vase dd gave me for Christmas is crying out for a lovely colourful bunch of daffs!

AndresyFiorella · 01/01/2026 09:00

Decs are meant to stay up until Twelfth Night for a reason! It's far too depressing taking them down as it is without doing it early.

Dolorsy · 01/01/2026 09:01

Christmas isn't even over until Jan 6.

StartingOverInMy40s · 01/01/2026 09:02

I can’t wait to take mine down and will be doing it today hopefully. I love how clean and tidy everything looks without the decorations up.

so much judgement for taking them down early. 🤣

Blogswife · 01/01/2026 09:03

I go through this every year and usually find myself a “ project “ as soon as New Year hits . Last year I redecorated the bedroom but this year I’ve git nothing left to do !! I need to think of something quick !
Love the thought of daffs in the house . Off to Tesco I go !

Lindy2 · 01/01/2026 09:03

New Year's Day would feel rather bland if all the Christmas decorations were taken down. It's still the Christmas/New Year celebrations.

Why did you take them down so early if you liked them?

The Spring flowers will be available soon. Daffodils in a vase, indoor hyacinths growing in pots, perhaps a pastel coloured decorative Spring wreath on your door or a garland around a fireplace (or somewhere else suitable).

Your home is what you make it.

LavenderSweetPea · 31/12/2025 23:43

Complete opposite. I do love Christmas and the decorations BUT I find them kind of over simulating and they take up a lot of room. I really like the feeling of calm and space when they go away.

Me too

What is the reason can I ask?

I've taken down my decorations too. I have a busy weekend and then i go on holiday on the 4th. It does feel a bit early to remove them but I wasn't leaving them up until i came back.

Disturbia81 · 01/01/2026 09:12

I get through this by having lots of fairy lights through the year and different leaf decor for spring summer and autumn.
