To think my house looks empty and boring now that the decs are down and I have a sudden urge to buy a lot of house stuff?

Decs only came down today so it's my first time sitting in my living room with it back in it's default state.

It suddenly looks so bland and boring 😭 I know I'll get used to it again but it's making me want to go online and buy loads of crap for my living room.

Anyone else feel like this when the decs come down?

Why have you taken them down? Its still Christmas!

Grapewrath · 01/01/2026 10:14

Strange that people think taking decs down is a social media trend?
I’ve always taken mine down after Boxing Day as Christmas is done and dustrd for my family then. We live in a small space and don’t celebrate new year

Yes, so we keep twinkly lights round fireplace all winter!

Yes similar here - we’ve got lots of tea lights on timers to come on six hours a day through winter. Also a nice new throw ready to go out. January is so depressing so we do a few things to keep the place looking nice and warm and welcoming.

Why have you taken them down so early? Seems like a social media trend to me.

Social media trend 😂

sashh · 01/01/2026 10:27

Another, "why did you take them down so early" from me.

Tip for next year, don't take them all down at once. Take the tree down and leave the other decs up for a few days.

12th night. Always keep house decorated until then!

Same here. I’ll take ours down on Tuesday, not before.

And yes, I put back the regular decs which I put away at Christmas. That works well.

WorriedRelative · 01/01/2026 10:30

Why are your decorations down? It isn't 12th night yet!

Chipsahoy · 01/01/2026 10:32

Keep them up for longer than you are grateful for the space when they come down. Also add something for your home to your wish list for Christmas. This year, I have new candles to put out when the decs are down.
Also doubly excited because our extension was finished just before Christmas so I haven’t styled it yet, right now it’s covered in Christmas decor.

Tigerpalm777 · 01/01/2026 10:32

Buy yourself a big bunch of tulips instead op!

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2026 10:33

Nothing to do with social media (Facebook, instagram thick tok) don’t have it.

Took them down, because we’d had more than enough of them being up.

Fruitsherbert · 01/01/2026 10:46

Nope. Love it when ours go. I didn't put them up until the 16th and they'll be gone today. Mum used to wait until 12th night but I think there's something depressing about xmas decs after Xmas. I've always done nyd and once the kids leave home, I don't think I'll even bother at all. My house is full of huge, actual plants. I don't need any other tat.

Christmastide runs to 5 January. It's not baffling if you observe Christian Christmas. For Catholics Christmas is an "octave ": 8 feast days from 25 December to 1 January. I shall be at mass tomorrow.

Oh shall you? How marvellous.

I was responding to the idea of being utterly “baffled” at someone taking their tree down on the 31st. Not exactly the head scratcher of the year is it?

notnorman · 01/01/2026 10:59

I leave my tree up until February and call it my winter tree!

AngelinaFibres · 01/01/2026 11:07

Perrylobster · 01/01/2026 01:41

Why are you taking them down so early?

It's a new year. We always have new, year new start. They come down on New Year's Eve , the house is cleaned, big vase of Spring flowers on the kitchen table and we go fresh and clean into the future. Makes me feel 'itchy' to have Christmas decorations still up when we have gone into a new year.

littletwinkle · 01/01/2026 11:31

Spring flowers, twinkly lights and candles, that’s what you need.

blackpooolrock · 01/01/2026 11:43

Step away from online shopping. You likely don't need anything for your house.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 01/01/2026 12:01

Every year, and every year I seem to get round it by rearranging the furniture! Grin

To be fair, we moved into this house a year ago and just chucked things in the living room vaguely the way the previous owners had arranged, and it had been bothering me for a while. It feels much better now, and not so much of the 'empty now' feeling, because we've changed it?

I do also have some decor that is seasonal, e.g. cushions, ornaments - so we swap things out periodically, rather than removing entirely, and this helps. I don't buy each year, we've built these things up over 20+ years of adulthood.

RampantIvy · 01/01/2026 12:01

TittyGajillions · 01/01/2026 08:58

That's exactly how I feel, I love a good post Christmas clean house.

Same here. I dislike candles and fairy lights as they give me eye strain. I don't need to feel "cosy" either. It just makes me feel claustrophobic.

Light and airy every time for me.

Weirdly, benign neglect (or, as I'm typing this list, I'm realising you have to treat them like gremlins...)

Don't put them in direct sun - indirect bright light is fine but they're woodland plants so no cooking them on a south facing windowsill

Also, try to keep them out of drafts and not right next to a heater - normal room temperature and fairly stable and they'll be happy

Don't let them stay wet - when you water them don't get water into the 'heart' of the plant, just hold the pot under a cold tap or over a sink and pour water over the roots and bark in the pot so it wets the potting mix thoroughly and runs out the bottom but doesn't gather in the middle of the plant and rot the leaves

Feed them by getting some orchid feed and making it up according to the instructions and just misting/spraying it over the plant once a week (or if you've only got one you can just get little spray bottle of the stuff. Poundland sell these a lot for some reason)

When they finish flowering, cut the flowering stem down, stop watering it and and put the plant somewhere colder (but sheltered/frost-free) for a couple of weeks to make the plant think it's had a winter, then bring it back to its normal spot and start watering/feeding it again

Don't repot them unless they've just finished flowering - if you do re-pot one, use another clear pot and a mixture of bark and sphagnum moss, dont pot them into compost/soil and don't pack them in too tightly, they usually grow a bit like alpines, in sparse soil on the sides of cliffs (or even in the bark of trees) so the roots don't need to be completely in contact with the potting medium and they benefit from being able to get some light

Hope there's something in there that you haven't already tried that helps!

Edited

Thank you SO much!

Not taken mine down yet, but I’m sitting looking for some kind of twinkly light thing I can have permanently in my conservatory, as I love the gentle light from the Christmas tree in there, meaning I don’t have to put the Big Light on or risk stubbing my toe when I go to let the dog out!

It most definitely is baffling. It’s the same as if you took your tree down on Christmas Eve. New Years Eve and Day are still very much part of Christmas-time, and there’s still a way to go beyond that.

Is it really baffling?

I don't see NYE or NYD as part of Christmas at all.

I'm not baffled that you do, its just different people doing things differently.

zingally · 01/01/2026 13:01

Yep!

Although something we often do is go out and buy a nice colourful bunch of flowers to stand on a little table where the tree was. I find some cheerful pop music from my 90s hey-day helps!
I've taken everything down this morning, tree is back in the box under the stairs, decs are in plastic tubs in the garage, cards have been made into next years gift tags.
Still need to find homes for the random piles of presents still dotted around, but find they generally disappear into new homes over the next couple of days.

Littlegreenbauble · 01/01/2026 13:08

I keep decs up until the 5/6th then I'm ready to take them down

Only if you adhere to that view of Christmas. We take our tree down any time we please as we aren’t Christian.

It’s only baffling if you lack the imagination to understand that people live different lives from you.
