To think Think 25 is ridiculous and sexist?!

Look, this is obviously an emotional post, just a rant really.

Just wanted to get some booze at Tesco at NYE. Got ID'd, didn't have ID (ID on my phone only). So went to off licence instead.

I'm 33 soon and consistently get ID'd. People think it's a compliment and friends even congratulate me for looking young.

A full-grown woman needing permission to spend her own money is absolutely not flattering.

I'd be interested to see if women get ID'd way more than men--I bet they do. I bet it's about 75-25 women-men (who are over 18) who get ID'd.

It's women themselves who like to look young/succumb to the pressure of needing to look young. So we've created this environment where people can't tell your age. And so when they do look young they are restricted from spending their own money. Do you see what I mean? The society punishes women either way: you either choose to look your age, or give up your independence. I've never tried to look young; it's probably a genetic thing.

It's not just alcohol obviously, I got ID'd for paracetamol at Waitrose when I had a cold.

Yeah yeah, I get it, 'Why don't you just bring your ID all the time?' Look, that's not the point. The point is women already cannot live as carefree as men in so many areas of life. Dealing with period, dealing with pain, dealing with having less physical force. This is just one more thing.

It's a covertly sexist policy.

That's all, have a wonderful new year.

I really am so glad I'm not one of these people who turn EVERYTHING into "Woe is me being persecuted for being a Woman".

My3loves · 01/01/2026 01:01

I work in a place where THINK25 is a big thing among the workplace. We ID anyone who looks under 25, male or female. The company places "fake" people who look young in the shop to see if we am acting apon the thunk 25 correctly. It really is as simple as its our job and has absolutley nothing to do with you being female or male.

The solution is ID people who look under 18. If they’re under 18 and look the legal age then oh well.

No, that means 100s of 16 year olds who look older will get served

Kind of makes it all pointless..

BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2026 01:33

It's not sexist.

Was refused service at 37 because I hadn't replaced my ID in my purse following a DBS check a few days earlier, and was IDed twice at 42. Admittedly the confusion and scrutiny at the 1980s birth date was quite amusing.

I very rarely wear make-up and can't remember how many years since I had to get ID out while wearing it.

People with smaller frames are probably more likely to be asked, but it's not a sexism issue.

GreenOtter · 01/01/2026 01:39

One day you won’t be asked and you’ll miss it. I’ve seen many people get asked when in line in front of me (men or women) and then I rock up and they take one look at me and start scanning my items lol.

I haven’t been asked since I was about 35, and no way would anyone ask now.

In time this won’t be a problem anymore - you’ll see.

Tiswa · 01/01/2026 02:56

@GreenOtter tbat is so true it must have been 35 for me as well. Even my 16 year old teen says I look good age wise (being fatter does help with that, I look late 30s and fat) but nowhere near getting id and you miss it!

But height also plays a factor DD is 5ft3 at 16 and DS is a 6ft 13 year old and people mistake them for twins all the time

RampantIvy · 01/01/2026 06:15

Imagine how it feels when ticket inspectors reply "no, you're OK" when I offer to show my senior railcard. YABU.

HelmholtzWatson · 01/01/2026 06:36

The only thing that's sexist here is your opening post. Happy New Year.

This, you get asked for id, you give it..job done!
Many moons ago dh at 23 just back from being deployed to a sandy place with army got asked for id in local supermarket when buying a bottle of fizz to celebrate a lost friend, got id, didn’t kick off, just showed MOD90 which they knocked back! 😆

I'm sure this is hilarious, but I can't be the only one who doesn't know what an MOD90 is. I'm 58 by.

StarlightLady · 01/01/2026 08:32

Just carry a credit card. A credit card (as opposed to a debit card) is proof of age. You can’t have a credit card until you are 18.

You’re not the only one. Googling now…

What do you expect shop workers to do ? They can get in big trouble for selling alcohol to underage people. I used to get ID’d a lot when younger but well over 25 probably because I am short. I used to take it as a compliment and always had id just in case. Now at the self checkouts they just wander over and I see them clicking a button that says “this person clearly looks over 25” 😕

Sorry it’s just the military ID, did think that as showed his date of birth and was in military they’d accept but didn’t! But as you say not actually funny!

RoseDog · 01/01/2026 09:26

Ds 20 never gets id but dd 22 always does, they were in Morrisons together recently and ds was buying beer and they didn’t id him but wouldn’t serve him because dd didn’t have id!

Not only can the shop worker get in trouble, the shop can get fined and potentially lose their license. There are inspectors out there.

InveterateWineDrinker · 01/01/2026 11:07

I am a man who was ID'd in Selfridges buying a bottle of Dom Perignon (obviously the under-age drinker's tipple of choice - it was then about £180 for the bottle) for my 40th birthday.

I grinned, put on my big boy pants, showed the sales assistant my ID, and went on my way all without feeling the need to wail to the internet about it.

Reading Mumsnet, I really do wonder sometimes how some people cope with life.

TheLittleChristmasFairy · 01/01/2026 15:04

So you think my 50 yr old DH who doesn’t have photo ID should pay for a passport just so he can buy alcohol?
how about you just show your ID when asked?
and this is from someone who was ID’d into my late 30s

AngeloMysterioso · 01/01/2026 16:30

I got id’d for HG mould bathroom cleaner in B&Q the week before my 39th birthday. I may not look quite my age (not paying myself a compliment, I just have a baby face) but I definitely don’t look too young to be buying bathroom cleaner! I get asked for ID way more now than I ever did in my underage clubbing days

Ineffable23 · 01/01/2026 16:37

I reckon what you're buying makes a significant difference to whether or not you get IDed. No one seems to ID me if I am buying dry sherry.

You can have another person's credit card though. It isn't photo I.d.

JLou08 · 01/01/2026 18:02

It really isn't sexist. This is such a huge reach.
Men probably do get asked for ID less, I don't think that's due to women trying to look younger though, as you say, you don't try and have been asked for ID.
In my experience, women/girls look like adults sooner. Women are usually at their full height by the time they are 16, the acne and awkward teenage looks have usually gone, our voices are no different and some teens can be curvey, some very slim, just as adult women are. On the other hand, boys tend to look and sound very much like boys until 18+.Therefore, assessing the age of young women is more difficult than it is to assess the age of young men.

Because the law is 18

KnickerlessParsons · 02/01/2026 00:58

DD2, who also looks young for her age - she’s late 20s - was refused paracetamol in Sainsbury’s because she didn’t have ID.
She came and got me (I was waiting in the car) and I went to the roll with her to buy it myself.

I was then also refused, as I was “obviously buying it for her”. I explained that yes I was - because she was the one with the headache - but they still wouldn’t let me buy it.
