To think Think 25 is ridiculous and sexist?!

Look, this is obviously an emotional post, just a rant really.

Just wanted to get some booze at Tesco at NYE. Got ID'd, didn't have ID (ID on my phone only). So went to off licence instead.

I'm 33 soon and consistently get ID'd. People think it's a compliment and friends even congratulate me for looking young.

A full-grown woman needing permission to spend her own money is absolutely not flattering.

I'd be interested to see if women get ID'd way more than men--I bet they do. I bet it's about 75-25 women-men (who are over 18) who get ID'd.

It's women themselves who like to look young/succumb to the pressure of needing to look young. So we've created this environment where people can't tell your age. And so when they do look young they are restricted from spending their own money. Do you see what I mean? The society punishes women either way: you either choose to look your age, or give up your independence. I've never tried to look young; it's probably a genetic thing.

It's not just alcohol obviously, I got ID'd for paracetamol at Waitrose when I had a cold.

Yeah yeah, I get it, 'Why don't you just bring your ID all the time?' Look, that's not the point. The point is women already cannot live as carefree as men in so many areas of life. Dealing with period, dealing with pain, dealing with having less physical force. This is just one more thing.

It's a covertly sexist policy.

That's all, have a wonderful new year.

I’m going to take a guess you got your wine and have already made a start on it?

Indeed I have. It's moscato and very sweet.

I never get ID'd anymore. Wish I was!

Buy paracetamol at the self check out. You get the same inconvenience whilst staring at yourself in the CCTV screen waiting for the assistant to come and fob the machine.

ForMyNextTrickIWillMakeThisVodkaDisappear · 31/12/2025 21:18

I’m a retail worker. I don’t think I ID women more than men or vice versa but I definitely notice that women are more likely to carry their ID on them (we don’t accept a photo of your ID, no one with any sense does) and men are more likely to kick off and have a tantrum about it when I reject the sale.

My advice is, if you know you’re likely to get asked for ID just carry it with you. Don’t blame the retail workers for literally following the law, the penalties are high. We have kids to feed and bills to pay and losing your job, getting a massive fine, threatened with jail and landing your boss in the shit with you, isn’t worth it just to not inconvenience someone who wanted to buy a booze/fags and couldn’t be arsed to have their ID on them.

You know what, without knowing the stats on men vs women, we can't tell for sure. I just suspect the worker would be more comfortable asking a borderline-case woman than a man. I've tried more makeup and no luck. Also it really is a bit subjective, you can go through self-checkout and no one cares. If they are to ID why not ID everyone, why leave it at the discretion of the worker? It's infantilising really, to stand there and wait for them to scan your face and make a judgment on whether or not you look like a full-grown adult. Then the poor worker who's not 25 looks embarrassed after seeing my age.

Even going through self check out, the till makes sure a member of staff IDs a person for age.
I haven't actually been asked to show ID at a self check out, but can't remember being asked at a normal check out either.
I am 52 though so have been obviously over 18 for a while.
The self check out at our local sainsburys has needed a staff member to confirm I am over 18 when buying paracetamol, Gavison, alcohol and Christmas crackers. The staff enter obviously over 18, which I am. ( some of the staff have probably seen me shopping in store for over 18 years too).

enkelt2 · 31/12/2025 20:22

My solution too, just ID everyone. Gives the worker one less job as well.

They don’t anymore - at Disney World at the moment and not seen a single person you know is over 21 asked (including me and DH)

everyone needs sign off even for paracetamol (which is for different reasons) so the only extra stage

SatsumasRock · 31/12/2025 21:22

I got ID'd buying a bottle of posh gin in John Lewis. Admittedly it was winter and I was wearing a hat and scarf.

I laughed when the cashier asked, thinking she was joking. She wasn't.
Handed my driver's licence over and, instead of just glancing and seeing my uear of birth started with "19" she stood there tilting my licence to check the hologram was legit. Like if I was underage I'd get a face licence that made me mid 40s. I definitely don't look under 18. Or even under 25. She was just super keen to do her job to the letter.

Zov · 31/12/2025 21:25

@enkelt2 Bad day?

Dollymylove · 31/12/2025 21:25

A low paid retail assistant can get fined 5 grand for selling to underage buyer so how about you just get off your high horse and show some ID😡

christmasnamechangeforthelotofthem · 31/12/2025 21:28

slashlover · 31/12/2025 21:02

So what do you do about a 16 year old who looks 18? I assume you've never worked in a job where alcohol is sold?

Did I mention anything whatsoever to do with a 16 year old looking 18?

Claire from the Tesco express is that you?

CamillaMcCauley · 31/12/2025 21:29

I’m sure looking youthful conveys many more advantages in life than it does disadvantages, particularly ones that are extremely easily remedied by carrying ID.

Also if you are buying alcohol often enough for this to be a serious blight on your life, you won’t look young for long.

lazyarse123 · 31/12/2025 21:29

I worked retail for 15 years. No discrimination from me and i asked anybody and everybody. Been called a cunt more times than i can count for asking, that was usually men. That was when i was on tills all shift.
Our tills registered how many people were asked and someone tried to tell me i hadn't asked many people over a month and i patiently explained to the moronic manager that would be because i was only on the till an hour every morning from 6.00 and we only ever got old people and delivery drivers so no one to ask.

You said

I agree. Ridiculous campaign. The age is 18 ffs. Challenge 21 was bad enough but 25 is just absurd. Im unable to carry a purse bag or any bank cards so it’s a fucking bastard to remember to bring cunting ID everywhere with me.

So you surely have a solution for the underage children who look 18? Or do you just want to complain?

To be fair, you're having a tantrum like a young teenager.

That sounds like Morrisons!

@enkelt2 you are being ridiculous. Just carry ID. They’re not doing it to “flatter” you, they’re following policy.

Co op. Just another box ticking exercise for them. Just trying to keep legal nobody actually cares as long as kids aren't buying it.

Except when the police do a test purchase.

TempestTost · 31/12/2025 21:43

Sure OP, maybe they should just lell booze to anyone without any age checks. And of course the sellers should not get in any trouble for it if they do sell to someone underage.

Fuck, talk about first world problems.

CatFaceCatFace · 31/12/2025 21:44

I ID people at work all the time. It's got absolutely nothing to do with you being a woman for goodness sake. Its about me not breaking the law and losing my job. It's surprisingly difficult to make a snap guess on someone's age. It's not an attack on women. I've literally heard it all now.

Just to add, we get test purchases every couple of months so it's not worth taking a risk on.

Pallisers · 31/12/2025 21:47

My son is 29 and his sisters are early 20s. All look young for their age but he gets asked for ID most often - even with us. I honestly don't think this is a sexist thing. Where I live there are often signs saying "If you look under 35 we will ID" but most likely "we ID everyone" If I buy wine in the supermarket I am asked for ID. I don't look under 21 considering my eldest is 29!

Completelybatshit · 31/12/2025 21:47

The solution already exists, carry your ID at all times. You are being ridiculous to suggest that an 85 year old would need to show ID just because you are personally frustrated that you look younger than your age. Do you feel the same about pubs/bars, everyone has to show their ID each time they go to the bar?

chisping · 31/12/2025 21:48

DS is 30 and certainly looks over 25. He still gets IDd every so often.
I suspect it's a bit dependent on the age of the server.

ClassicalQueen · 31/12/2025 21:51

Get a bloody grip. If this is your biggest worry then well done OP, your life is pretty good. Have a good new year.

Grammarnut · 31/12/2025 21:52

I get ID'd every time I buy alcohol and use a self-service till. I am nowhere near 25, alas! Doesn't bother me.
