To think Think 25 is ridiculous and sexist?!

Look, this is obviously an emotional post, just a rant really.

Just wanted to get some booze at Tesco at NYE. Got ID'd, didn't have ID (ID on my phone only). So went to off licence instead.

I'm 33 soon and consistently get ID'd. People think it's a compliment and friends even congratulate me for looking young.

A full-grown woman needing permission to spend her own money is absolutely not flattering.

I'd be interested to see if women get ID'd way more than men--I bet they do. I bet it's about 75-25 women-men (who are over 18) who get ID'd.

It's women themselves who like to look young/succumb to the pressure of needing to look young. So we've created this environment where people can't tell your age. And so when they do look young they are restricted from spending their own money. Do you see what I mean? The society punishes women either way: you either choose to look your age, or give up your independence. I've never tried to look young; it's probably a genetic thing.

It's not just alcohol obviously, I got ID'd for paracetamol at Waitrose when I had a cold.

Yeah yeah, I get it, 'Why don't you just bring your ID all the time?' Look, that's not the point. The point is women already cannot live as carefree as men in so many areas of life. Dealing with period, dealing with pain, dealing with having less physical force. This is just one more thing.

It's a covertly sexist policy.

That's all, have a wonderful new year.

But the argument is that makeup makes people look older in the cases of 16-17 YO girls, how is that upholding a sexist beauty standard for women to look younger?

It's that women use makeup more than men, full stop. So that's why judging the age of women is more difficult and maybe partially why it's Think 25 because, as you say, real teenagers look older than they are due to makeup.

I got ID’d when I was 44 a few (9) years ago! I was flattered but also pissed off that a woman in Sainsbury’s literally wouldn’t let me buy a couple of bottles of wine for a dinner party that evening. She had to get her manager over!! 😂

My solution too, just ID everyone. Gives the worker one less job as well.

It gives them one MORE job to do
It holds the line up longer and then you get yelled at by the 80 year old pointing out they are clearly that old...

Pollqueen · 31/12/2025 20:45

Why do you need to prove you're 25+ when it is legal to consume alcohol at 18? Sadly, I have never been asked for ID

Because its impossible to tell the difference between a 17 year old and an 18 year old. You only have to be 18 to buy it but you need to prove it, if you look under 25

Tattiana · 31/12/2025 20:47

I went into Morrisons to buy a bottle of champagne to give as a gift on the way to a party. I was 30ish at the time and was with my sister who is 3 years younger than me. Got ID’d at the self checkout and whilst I had my ID on me, my sister (who was not paying for the champagne) did not, and they wouldn’t sell it to me.

Now that was annoying.

HarryVanderspeigle · 31/12/2025 20:48

I don't drink alcohol, but sometimes buy as presents. The self scan requires a member of staff to sense check. The man in his 20's next to me was id'd and proved his age. The employee took one look at me and said I was definitely old enough. I'm in my 40's, but thanks for saying I look like a crone 🤣.

InSpainTheRain · 31/12/2025 20:48

I honestly think it’s just policy. Nothing to do with male or female or what you look like. I got ID’d for plant food a while back. I was 58 and I am sure I don’t look young! But carry your ID and there are no problems.

CatsandOatcakes · 31/12/2025 20:48

Yes, but you both could be consuming the product or you could be buying it for your sister.

miamo12 · 31/12/2025 20:49

Just carry id, my driving licence lives in my phone case, problem solved. I was id’d at 42

Make up isn't sexist though

And if it's been worn to look older then it's certainly not a sexist "women must look young"

Tattiana · 31/12/2025 20:49

Tell you what is offensive though 😂 in one of the supermarkets they press a button on the self service check out that says “customer is clearly over 25”. Ouch.

I've seen 18 year old males who look 16 and 18 year olds who look in their early 20s.

Yeah. I went into Lidl and she waited outside 🤷🏻‍♀️

toomuchcrapeverywhere · 31/12/2025 20:51

You can legally drink alcohol at home from age 5 in U.K.

I sent my Mum (who was in her 80s) a case of tonic water from Amazon. It was flagged as alcoholic and she was asked for ID. No passport or driving licence, and they wouldn’t accept a bus pass as evidence of age. So she didn’t get her tonic water. She was obviously over18 - why not just as for her date of birth.

To stop proxy purchases

A group of us from Uni were waiting for one to buy some alcohol and we all had to show our ID just in case

Womaninhouse17 · 31/12/2025 20:51

Just show your ID. It's not difficult. And there's no sexism there.

slashlover · 31/12/2025 20:52

Still can't legally buy it though.

Because people never lie about that.

enkelt2 · 31/12/2025 20:54

Well if minors can drink at home, what's the prohibition of buying all about?!

Alcohol laws in the UK are tricksy

CatsandOatcakes · 31/12/2025 20:56

Tattiana · 31/12/2025 20:50

Yeah. I went into Lidl and she waited outside 🤷🏻‍♀️

An employee wouldn't be sacked for that though.
They are trying to keep within the law and not be dismissed because of a judgement call that shouldn't be theirs to have to make.

CinnamonBuns67 · 31/12/2025 20:56

My husband gets ID'd if he doesn't have a beard, doesn't get ID'd if he does. I just don't get ID'd ever.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 31/12/2025 20:57

I can’t imagine going out intending to buy alcohol with no ID on me. But I live in a country where everyone is carded for alcohol purchases, even if you are 90. I don’t know how you got to the shop but I would never drive anywhere without my license either. Another thing that’s a requirement here.

WilfredsPies · 31/12/2025 20:58

Mum4MrA · 31/12/2025 20:16

The daft thing is that the legal age to buy alcohol is 18, so even a 25 year old has been able to buy alcohol for 7 years. Does anyone know why 25 was chosen for the campaign?

Because it’s incredibly easy for a 14 yr old to look like an 18 year old. I could easily get served when I was 14 and I didn’t wear make up. (Great fun then, not as much fun now I wake up looking like Zelda from Terrahawks). It’s much harder for a 14 yr old to look like they’re 25.

It’s annoying. Then suddenly, one day, it stops happening And that is truly heartbreaking. I remember a man handing out flyers for a nightclub outside the train station and he didn’t even try to hand me one, not even to get rid of it. That hit hard 😂

Rollerbarbie88 · 31/12/2025 20:58

If anything, this is an agism issue and not sexism issue. As a former shop worker, I was far more likely to ID a 30 year old than a 60 year old, regardless of their sex. The real issue is that you are too immature to carry your ID, despite being old enough to understand the law.
