Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

I think they already think I’m uptight/stuck up. I’m not sure how to style this out without just reinforcing that.

Previously I’ve done the breezy ‘remember to wash your hands!’ But I have to catch them in the act for this to work and it feels so infantilising.

I don’t think I can mention this to dh at the moment. I’ve been far too critical of them previously and even though he agrees with a lot of what I’m saying, I think it’s hard for him to repeatedly hear and have to acknowledge. It needs to be realised by/come from him really.

I think they already think I’m uptight/stuck up.

I think you sound seriously anally retentive. I do wash my hands but have never in my life policed whether guests in my home do so nor have I ever worried for a moment about it.

I only wash my hands after a wee in public places not in my own home

That’s really really gross.

Grim

I can’t believe how many people don’t wash their hands.

I would get either antibacterial wipes or spray, and clean all door handles, surfaces and anything thing else they touch it’s so disgusting.

Are you quite well? I've never listened to someone going to the toilet to find out if they wash their hands. What a bizarre thing to do.

Her in laws have form for poor hygiene so the change in the normal sound patterns when they use the toilet is probably very noticeable to the OP

When a cup has been sitting on the draining board so is basically dry you press the rim of the cup on your boob (while dressed obviously) and turn

Hahahaha C'mon! we've all done that!

I don’t think most people deliberately observe whether guests wash their hands after the toilet but most would have some concern if they happened to notice for eg that someone exited the loo immediately after flushing.
Especially if that person is then going to help with food prep or is going to be enjoying eating food with others.

Ummm what now? That’s really disgusting

Some people can't constantly wash their hands. I can't due to my skin. I have to decide when its most important such as before preparing food or after doing a no2. I do carry my skin creams round in my bag but it still wont hack it if I wash my hands too much they will bleed.
And before you say 'well that's only you and its rare' its not rare st all. There are loads of skin conditions this applies to and some like eczema are really common.

Bones101 · 31/12/2025 01:59

I am a physician.

Every year for the past 3 years physicians scored the least likely to wash their hands in the hospital I work in. Let thank sink in.

People are gross no matter who they are.

Sbmpp · 31/12/2025 02:59

I actually post a note above the toilet that says “Wash your hands then use the paper towels on counter to dry”, It makes me sick to see people walking around spreading e.Coli or norovirus. 🤮. Ugh….

I’d quite like hand washers and non-hand washers to be segregated. All the non-hand washers can go live somewhere together, content touching each others poo particles and all of the hand washers can live together in peace.

Yes good idea - they should all go and live on The Isle of Shight

BeanQuisine · 31/12/2025 05:54

It's possible they don't trust your germ-encrusted taps, so they wash their hands with anti-bacterial wipes once they return to their room.

SouthernNights59 · 31/12/2025 06:02

youalright · 30/12/2025 22:18

Why is it?

Yes, why is it? I don't wash my hands after a pee in my own home, and I am rarely ever ill. What do you think is going to happen?

Maestoso · 31/12/2025 06:43

Washing hands with soap and water saves lives. Imagine surgeons not scrubbing in.

All you "I don't wash my hands but I'm not a filthy fucker" you absolutely are, fucking gross.mingers

Washing hands with soap and water is first level prevention of disease spread. Some idiot saying "all the people in my house have been in my body at some time ..." Have they not washed since?

Soap and water is BASIC hygiene that's rolled out from first to third world countries. And so many here ignoring it because they think they're above it. If anyone learned anything in lockdown it should've been hand washing.

If you don't wash your hands after the loo, why wash them before cooking? There's no point. You already left shit over everything you touched so if you wash your hands to cook and touch what you touched after not washing them you just picked that shit up again.

thepariscrimefiles · 31/12/2025 06:59

youalright · 30/12/2025 22:24

I always wash my hands after a poo or if im on my period. I always wash my hands before and after preparing food. But just a quick wee in my own home I don't think its necessary. People need some germs.

No-one needs toilet germs though. If never washing your hands after pooing or weeing helped build resistance to germs, why are people in countries with no access to toilets and proper sanitation dying of preventable diseases?

Poor or no hand washing after using the toilet significantly increases the risk of contracting and spreading serious infections.

beigeybeige · 31/12/2025 07:07

I’ve noticed this not washing hands can go with some abnormally high and fixed self opinion, whereby the non washer feels they are fine so everything they want to do (including not washing hands) is fine.
this won’t change sorry. Hope they are kind and nice in other ways.

I can't get over the people on this thread who don't see this as an issue. It is disgusting not to wash your hands after using the loo.

This.

ln addition not only does washing hands after each loo visit guarantee good toilet hygiene, it ensures regular hand washing. Have so many people forgotten the pandamic?

youalright · 30/12/2025 23:22

Why would my hands be dirty after having a wee i don't wee on my hands.

Someone will probably have flushed your toilet using the hand that they have just used to wipe their bum after a poo and when you flush after a wee, you could pick up some poo germs that you would transfer to the rest of the house as you didn't wash your hands.

You're right. I should've said a dirty non-washer making an idiotic comment. Apologies.
