Anyone got any bright ideas what on earth I’ve done with my damn car keys??

I must’ve had them to get back into the house, checked all coat pockets, bags, shelves (where I usually put them) drawers, kitchen, bathroom, inside shoes in the hall, pulled sofa cushions out & looked underneath??

Agghh, really need to go somewhere tomorrow - where have you lost/found keys before?

Mine were in the spare bedroom on the bed. Literally the last place I looked. Currently lost the back door key.

Thewishingchair123 · 27/12/2025 22:12

Behind something in the kitchen (eg behind the bread bin or something they could have been balancing on.
OR - try the plastic bag/shopping bag cupboard ? Sometimes when im carrying loads they slip inside as im dumping everything down once im home.
wish you good luck x

Do you have a child? If so-look inside any ride on toy you have.

TheNightingalesStarling · 27/12/2025 22:16

We found our car keys two years after losing them on holiday, and after a house move...

In the lining of a bag.

Icecreamisthebest · 27/12/2025 22:16

Check all pockets of clothes you were wearing not just coat pockets.

what else was in your hands when you came inside? Check all shopping bags and other items.

look around the front door, both inside and out. Maybe you unlocked the door and then dropped them.

dod you rush to the loo and leave them in there?

GameofPhones · 27/12/2025 22:16

Where lost keys have been found in my family:-

in the pocket of clothing in the laundry basket
in the lining of a coat (they slipped through a hole in the pocket)
still in the door outside
in the car boot (dropped unknowingly while handling things in there).
Good luck finding them.

Katemax82 · 27/12/2025 22:18

Places I find stuff
Inside a box of toy aeroplanes my son got for Christmas
Under the boot base where the spare wheel lives.
In the hole where your seat belt thingy that the buckle clips into comes out of.
Just sitting out of sight under the sofa or TV stand

EconomyClassRockstar · 27/12/2025 22:18

Are they in the car?! That's where mine (stupidly) were this morning. They were in my gym bag and I forgot to take that out as I had some food shopping too.

EconomyClassRockstar · 27/12/2025 22:19

Oh just read you needed them to get back into the house. So, probably not then!

Rocknrollstar · 27/12/2025 22:19

Mine were in the greenhouse

bigbluefish · 27/12/2025 22:20

Once found mine in the basket with dog lead / harness etc by the door.

have also lost random stuff down the side of the car seat - that awkward spot where you need to move the seat forward & back.

HardworkSendHelp · 27/12/2025 22:20

you said you pulled the sofa cushions out. But could they have fallen down behind the upright back part of the sofa. I found mine there once.

rosydreams · 27/12/2025 22:21

on the changing table
top of the fridge
by the tv
under the shoe rack
down the side of my arm chair
the kids doll house

Scubanicki · 27/12/2025 22:21

Not helpful now but after I lost mine in a muddy field in the dark, I got a tile. Like an apple tag but plays a tune to help find key. Definitely recommend. Good luck x

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 27/12/2025 22:22

I've found mine in the front door lock many times
Have you tried praying to St Anthony btw?

2026Panther · 27/12/2025 22:22

They've been thrown into the bag of used wrapping paper - empty it out!

inmyera · 27/12/2025 22:23

last time I lost mine for three days, I found them in our hair bobble pot

LemonLass · 27/12/2025 22:23

Hi @Changingplace
Are you wearing same clothes? Check other clothing if not.

If you have anything on top of furniture/counters eg a discarded scarf, a menu, tea towel (anything)? If yes, tidy it away in case something had been put on top of keys.

Tip everything out of your bag onto a table or floor. Check all compartments of bag.

Check floors (inside and outside home in daylight)

Get a spare cut when you find original

Have one place for keys (not helpful now but removes this stress)

Hope you find them ASAP 🤞

When the car keys went missing a year or so back, I searched the house, the garden, the shed, the garage, the greenhouse, the drawers, behind the cushions, every room in the house, under the furniture, the works. DH had to go to work on an evening shift (we share a car) and he had to ring in and say he was unable to make it for the 6pm til midnight shift as he can't get there, because he can't find the car keys! The woman who had done 10am to 6pm rang someone else to do the 6 hour shift. We live in a village - no public transport, and his job is 15 miles away.

About 5 minutes after DH's shift should have started, I found the keys. In the cutlery drawer in the kitchen. Blush I mean, we checked 'all the drawers' but didn't think of looking where the knives, forks, and spoons were.

He didn't go in, as someone had gone in to do the 6 hour shift, and it wouldn't have been fair on them. He told them at work the next day that we found the keys about 4 and a half hours into his shift...

Thing is, whilst I don't remember putting them there, I know it was me. 😬I usually put them on the key hook in the hall cupboard.

Hope you find them soon @Changingplace ! Some good suggestions here!

Errolwasahero · 27/12/2025 22:28

The first place you looked.

whatawalley · 27/12/2025 22:29

Mine were in a plastic bag of things I had brought in from the car but hadn't gone through yet.

Flatandhappy · 27/12/2025 22:29

Mine had fallen behind the radiator in the hall where I had obviously plonked them as I came in. They got caught on the bracket so didn’t just fall down the back.

Rootatoot · 27/12/2025 22:30

In a bag having slipped through a hole in the lining

In the loo ( on the shelf next to it)

In a bag for life with the food shopping

In the fridge

Tucked in a bra when you didn't have a pocket handy.

In a coat pocket

PrincessOfPreschool · 27/12/2025 22:31

My DD hid them once in a saucepan (covered with lid) as I was going away for one night with DH and she didn't want me to go (grandparents babysitting). She was 3. I still don't know how on earth I even thought of looking there.

Yes on the windowsill in the toilet is a good bet.

In terms of kid hiding places, I've had two bright ideas that have yielded positive results in the past - in the hole in a speaker, and under a hot plate lid on a toy cooker (looked too small to hold anything much in there, but no; everything I was searching for had been squeezed in).

Other places - in the shopping bags, in the bin, on top of the bread bin, by the kettle.
