I am I’m pretty sure if I posted I was going to get pregnant at 38 on here,I would be told I’m too old.

38 is a really normal age to be pregnant; it’s later than average, but averages are obviously the product of conception ages varying widely.

It’s very normal these days to get pregnant later, but it was historically very normal as well. The difference in modern times is that it’s more common for a woman’s first child to be conceived later, whereas in the past it would be unlikely to be their first.

@Badslipperluck Is that with certain conditions? I just had a baby at almost 40 and didn’t come across either of those things.

Summerbay23 · 26/12/2025 22:55

Woah, no way I’d risk it unless planned, a pretty normal age these days.

Dinosweetpea · 26/12/2025 22:56

I had my 2nd DD at 38, conceived pretty quickly, you are being utterly ridiculous. Several friends had children late 30s early 40s.

YY, this is a really important point - in the past, it was really common for women to be pregnant into their late 30s and 40s, even 50s.

Sadly, it does mean that recurrent miscarriage was a fact of life, and well understood. We've lost that understanding now.

But it has never been unusual for women to get pregnant at 38.

PurpleCoo · 26/12/2025 23:00

More people give birth in their 40s than do in their 20s! I am 49 and I still wouldn’t take the risk!!

I think you mean more women given birth in their 40s than under 20s!

GentleSheep · 26/12/2025 23:04

Before the contraception pill existed women became pregnant into their 40s quite often!

Moortown · 26/12/2025 23:05

I got pg at 40, ended in MC and I had to have an operation to remove the pregnancy. Wouldn’t suggest it as a great option.

Muffsies · 26/12/2025 23:06

I was a bit older than that when i fell pregnant.. one year after a sterilisation. He's 11 now.

Utter bullshit. I cannot think of a single recent thread where anyone has said 38 is too old.

are you pregnant but not worried about it because you’re older? I don’t think you need to be - speak to your doctor if you’re concerned and take all your vitamins

YourWinter · 26/12/2025 23:11

Yeah as long as you cross your fingers you can’t get pregnant at the age of 38. Or maybe if you sneeze.

Are you usually so dim OP?

You most certainly would not be told that it would be impossible to get pregnant.

Yes, I absolutely did. Finger/brain disconnect there haha

Jk987 · 27/12/2025 07:13

What is the normal age? Anything before menopause isn’t it?

chunkyBoo · 27/12/2025 08:42

I had my first at 37 and second at 40. My obs consultant said it was pretty normal and has many up to the age of 45

TheatreTraveller · 27/12/2025 08:53

Well I had my children at 39 and 42!

Badslipperluck · 27/12/2025 10:32

@UnintentionalArcher I had a baby at 35 and was told this was for 35 and older. I refused as was healthy and well and on the cusp of the age limit for it.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 27/12/2025 11:23

It very much depends how you frame the question. If you know you want children, I think it would be a risky strategy and I would very much advise against waiting until your late 30s to start trying to conceive. OTOH, if you don't want children you should use contraception until you are through menopause. These are not contradictory opinions.

MaggieBsBoat · 27/12/2025 11:26

I accidentally offended a friend who was 36 that I wouldn’t have kids at her age as I would be too old. Karma got me at 43. I used to be a real idiot too.

ConfusedAsToWhatDayItIs · 27/12/2025 12:01

OP I'm 53 and still having a period every 28 days. GP says if I'm having sex i still need to use contraception until I'm 55.

So at 38 unless your periods have been stopped for over a year then yes you do need contraceptives.

I would imagine my chances of getting pregnant without contraception would be tiny if at all but that was the official NHS advice. At 38 your chances of getting pregnant would be much higher.

You wouldn't because it's not too old

Holdingthem · 27/12/2025 18:27

38 seems pretty average for pregnancy where I live.

I had a planned pregnancy at 35, then two surprise pregnancies at 38 and 42. Not sure why you think 38 is too old 😂
