i love it - beautiful shaped band and understated. it's like mine except i have yellow gold. i do wish i'd chosen the 0.8ct ring instead of the 0.4 ct but my wedding ring is a knife-edge shaped ring with diamonds on each side. very small micro diamonds on the wedding band but i love it. congratulations and what a lovely time of year to shop for your ring!

Shinyandnew1 · 27/12/2025 11:11

it does feel a bit tight on my finger and I couldn’t get it back on when I woke up!

I wouldn't say that was the right size then-I'd go back to the jewellers; it shouldn't feel too tight.

grooveraidiator · 27/12/2025 11:23

here is my small .04ct plain- low-key ring. i have small-ish fingers , size j. did you buy the ring when your hands were freezing? i'd go back to jewellers and try ones with warmed up hands if you think you need a re-size.

my setting is almost full bezel as i'm a very practical person and didn't want it catching. it's also set straight on the band so my rings dont sit neatly together but i like that. my wedding ring has visible diamonds one side and set on a diagonal on the other side.

Ps thank you for the hand comments - I’ve had quite a few people say the same over the years 😅 I think I’m going to go and get an opinion on the size and if I need it resizing rather than exchanging it

Mine cost £150 but that was more than 20 years ago - it's a 1/5 carat diamond solitaire in white gold (not unlike the OP's but mine is in a twist setting). You wouldn't get a similar ring new for that price nowadays.

An engagement ring is - or should be bought with the intention of being - a once in a lifetime purchase that you can see yourself wearing for the rest of your life.

I really don't think £1200 is an unreasonable amount to spend, or an unreasonable price to mention. There used to be a 'rule' that an engagement ring should cost about one month's salary - well, if OP's fiancé were on the minimum wage, £1200 would be less than half that amount!

The OP mentioned the price because some people were criticising the solitaire for being too small - in other words, hinting that her fiancé had skimped on the cost.

For all you know, he might have been saving for months to buy the OP a nice ring.

I do think you are being a little unreasonable,

The solitaire is very small - actually does look just like mine!

That “rule” was made up by the company who owned all the diamonds.

If you have to save for months, I would argue that you should probably go for a cheaper ring. There’s a great rule of thumb that I heard, where you think “can I afford to buy this twice?”, and if the answer is no then you don’t buy it, as then the item owns you, rather than you it. Rings are so easily lost, and people put a lot of meaning on them.

I really only posted as I don’t have many friends to show it to and I’m not the type to post it on say Facebook or anything!

Its beautiful, congratulations 🎊

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 27/12/2025 09:25

Surely your post is also irrelevant then, or does that only apply to others?

It's relevant to OP as she wanted to share as no friends close by as says in her post.
Also may be small (tiny to you) but OP was chosen it and likes it.

Also, the forum gets a lot of traffic which means she can just enjoy talking about it and have loads of people be excited with and for her, while her friends irl might get fed up of hearing about it. She can read and re-read the thread. I think it was a good decision to post. The ring is lovely and looks good. It’s classy. I hate the big engagement rings.

GymBergerac · 27/12/2025 14:32

It's very similar to mine which I adore, so I think it's lovely, huge congratulations 😊

SerafinasGoose · 27/12/2025 20:10

OP, please don’t be swayed from your choice by negative commentary on Mumsnet. Your engagement, your decision, and I think your ring is very pretty, simple and classic.

It’s all a matter of personal taste. I also prefer white metal and chose platinum over gold. You are the one who will be wearing it, and you’ve chosen the ring you love. And when it comes to diamonds, quality is more important than size.

Many congratulations on your engagement, I wish you every happiness🥂

EeByGumMum · 28/12/2025 12:35

@grooveraidiator my hands were quite cold when I was being sized. Your rings are beautiful x

Do you think the diamond is too small? I’m worried it’s too small of a diamond now and should I exchange it for a bigger one before getting it adjusted and I can’t exchange 😔

Growlybear83 · 29/12/2025 14:14

Of course the diamond isn’t too small - it’s a really nice size. It’s classic, elegant, and looks lovely on your hand. I would much prefer to have your ring, which you clearly loved in your earlier posts, to a great big gaudy blingy ring.

23Shadows · 29/12/2025 14:17

I don't think it's too small. Please don't let other people's preferences for a larger blingier ring sway you.

Yours looks like a similar size to mine. I've never wanted a larger one.

You love your ring and now have been made to doubt yourself by nasty comments on MN. Please don't think anything but how excited you were and how much you are looking forward to being married.

And it's a beautiful, classic elegant ring.

ReturnToRiding · 29/12/2025 14:34

Classic and elegant , congrats

No! I like yours far better than the huge diamonds currently being worn.

The big blingy ones are going to be looking very dated soon.

Congratulations to you both.
If you’re asking that question you must have some doubt. I’d change it now as I did the same and don’t regret it.

MrsDoomsPatterson1 · 29/12/2025 14:56

Agree I’d change it to the next size

lovemelongtime · 29/12/2025 14:59

Not at all, it's lovely. All rings take a bit of getting used to do don't get it resized for at least a week and you will then definitely know.

I don’t think a big diamond will ever look dated but if someone didn’t like them fine

Itsallsostressful · 29/12/2025 17:37

I think your ring is beautiful on you. I could never wear something as classic and elegant on my wee short chubby fingers !! X

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 29/12/2025 17:59

OP, you just got engaged to hopefully, the man of your dreams.
Celebrate that and bask in the newly engaged phase.

If you asked 100 people, half may say Yes, and half No, then what?

Do what feels good to you.
The media love to focus on size, but look how those celebrity marriages fare.

If you want a bigger one because this one doesn't suit you/your fingers then do, but don't so it based on people who only have a teeny window into your life.

I have a small diamond and did feel it should have been bigger, but thought of my DM and DMIL who both didn't have any stone at all, just a gold band and their marriages have lasted over 50 years each.

Not saying big = short marriage or vice versa, but try and see the bigger picture.

You Loved it and chose it, despite having other options for a reason.

christmassytimeagain · 29/12/2025 16:09

Oh they will.

Part of the cachet of a diamond was the tight control of the supply and the subsequently inflated price. De Beers have now lost control of the supply chain and the market is flooded with lab grown with a corresponding drop in prices.

I pay £1-2 a diamond from my supplier for those pave style chips and I'm only a small player in the jewellery making market. I can buy a 2ct lab grown diamond suitable for a solitaire for £300 or so. A good colour sapphire of the same size will be 3 or 4 times the price.

The large diamonds are now almost ubiquitous and I'm already seeing people moving on to other stones and styles.
