Inappropriate present, hideous bookends and me in drag!!!!

I love christmas, and I love christmas presents, I got my best friend a lovely calendar showing photos that were precious to me throughout the year of all the good times we have shared, in return, and this is so strange, I got two bookends, which have obviously been handmade, but look like my face, but in a grotesque punch and judy way, I'm not sure whether they are supposed to look so scary, but they are hideous, I actually had nightmares about them last night, and on top of that, a smaller 3D figurine which is basically me looking like a drag queen in hideous blonde hair and a massive red bow, they obviously took a long time and I get that, but I wonder what they are trying to tell me, they have sent me a message asking what I think of them and I really don't know what to say, to be honest, Im quite upset they see me that way. Im just a normal person who loves christmas, I was hoping for tickets to see a christmas carol or something like that.

That is hideous and I think I'd have it blessed before sticking on a bonfire tbh.
So called friend dropped from great height as well, would NEVER talk to her again what a total cow.

Arlanymor · 26/12/2025 17:54

diddl · 26/12/2025 16:34

Then perhaps it's just a jokey reference to that?

Quite and how is it any difference to those caricature sketches that people get done? They're really common and while they exaggerate characteristics, they are not intended to be rude or spiteful. My Dad has one of him playing rugby for Wales from when he retired.

I can't get over the fact that no effort was made to pay back this friend £300 for the meal which was supposed to be 'a Christmas present' and then to expect £300-worth of tickets as a gift?! OP bought a calendar. Her friend spent £300 on a meal and also made some homemade trinkets. Why would anyone expect to be bought tickets when they hadn't reimbursed the meal that they were 'hosting'.

Grrrzelda · 26/12/2025 17:55

The eyes on that figurine are all wrong.

Put the things in a bag, smash them with a hammer while inside the bag, put them in an outside bin, take a bath with salt, say a prayer.

And pay them the money.

Yeah this is obvious maleficium

Thanks 👍

Eh?

PS5Gamer · 26/12/2025 18:01

From what you’ve posted, you are a CF Friend.

You take your Friends out for a meal, encouraging them to order what food/wine they want. They end up paying for the meal themselves!

You buy a calendar, and expect Theatre tickets in return!

Pay them back, what you owe them.

Isayitasitis · 26/12/2025 17:13

According to another commenter, that apparently makes you ND! How flattering eh? 🙄🙄🙄

What does that mean?

Spirallingdownwards · 26/12/2025 18:03

confusedgoldilocks · 26/12/2025 15:57

yes but the bill for the meal I took them out for was £300 which is about the same as the tickets, although, obviously, they ended up paying, its such a mess now and I feel I have lost a good friend, and no they did not order them, they look homemade, my friend works with computers and has 3D printers

You are bonkers. They stumped up for a meal you were taking them out for. You expected expensive tickets and gave them a calendar in return! Can't comment on what they have given you. They may not be supposed to be caricatures of you at all but you have taken it that way perhaps.

Moonlightdust · 26/12/2025 18:06

Kimura · 26/12/2025 16:27

Wait, so you think your friend wants to take some form of revenge on you for not being able to pay for dinner?

And you think the way they've chosen to do this is to make some bookends that make fun of your appearance and give them to you as a Christmas gift?

Do you realize how insane that sounds?

Well it would sound like that, however the fact they specifically requested her brother film her reaction when opening it and then played it on a big screen as entertainment for their family all laughing, certainly looks like it was purposeful.

SomewhatAnnoyed · 26/12/2025 18:06

They sound awful and your brother sounds awful too. Are they mutual friends? If you said you’d pay them back I don’t know what their problem was. They’re cruel and you should cut them off over this

Grrrzelda · 26/12/2025 18:08

So they not only have a photo of you that they modelled their curse object on, they have a film capturing you in the first instant with it?

Do not let these people cross your threshold again.

This sort of seems to suggest that you think that because you intended to take them out for a £300 meal they should have got you £300 tickets. But what actually happened is THEY took YOU out for a £300 meal, you want £300 tickets in addition, and in return your friend got a homemade calendar.

The bookends are ugly, I'll give you that. Some people do like caricatures though!

If you were hoping for tickets, why did you not buy you and her tickets as her present? but a calendar and then expect tickets???? Art is subjective. You didn’t appreciate it and that’s fine. The choice is, be honest and say they’ve upset you or get rid and say nothing. The dinner debacle could be put right by buying restaurant vouchers for your friend and her husband

bonquiqui · 26/12/2025 18:21

Isayitasitis · 26/12/2025 17:17

Exactly yet people love calling any kind of off behaviour as you are ND? I like to picture it being asked with a mumsnet head tilt and tinkly laugh. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Deliberate mischaracterisation of my comment. My asking the OP if she had ever considered she might be ND was the unusual hyper focus and misreading that this was all some elaborate joke by the friends and brother. Which seemed to be unhelpfully missing the point and might have helped her make sense of why her behaviour was also slightly batshit

I never said I didn’t think she was also being cheeky, thoughtless and selfish too. I alluded to that further down in my comment. ND people can be ND and also act like knobheads

MaidOfSteel · 26/12/2025 18:21

It seems like your friendship is over any way, so I’d tell her what you think, OP. That it was a cruel thing to do, compounded by humiliating you in front of your own family and then theirs. Cruel and juvenile.

As for your brother. He would be dead to me after actively taking part.

How fucking nasty some people are.

ChattyCatty25 · 26/12/2025 18:23

YABU. They were nothing more than bad but well-meaning gifts. There’s no hidden meaning. She thought you would like these caricatures of yourself and see them as endearing.

Nope

@confusedgoldilocks

Is this friend a guy?

Llamallamafruitpyjama · 26/12/2025 18:30

confusedgoldilocks · 26/12/2025 15:36

hand on heart , I really did not, when I saw the bill I panicked, I have not taken anyone out for dinner in a long time, the bread and olives were nearly £8! I let them choose the wine but again, did not realise it was nearly £40 as we didnt have a wine menu, I just said, choose the wine you look and enjoyed the role as host, looking back, I do think this is their way of sending me a message, I get that I messed up, and I probably want things and a lifestyle I can't afford but this seems so cruel.

None of them prices seem high? How on earth did you offer to pay and then didn’t manage to pay for ANY??? This is so shitty, weird and rude. I’d never be going out with you again and it would have been embarassing.

Sam9769 · 26/12/2025 18:30

confusedgoldilocks · 26/12/2025 15:17

They do have a partner, and I have met them, we all went out for dinner just before christmas, and it seemed fine, although I think I may have embarrassed them, I offered to pay and we all ordered quite a lot with quite a lot of drink which I encouraged as I was paying, but then my card got declined, well, I say my card, I ended up trying a few, as you do, and in the end my dear friend paid and refused to let me pay, so I thought it was all sorted but maybe they are trying to tell me something, its quite confusing because the book ends really are quite scary versions of me, maybe I should send them the money for the bill, as they refuse to take it in person.

You should have sent them the money for the bill later when yo could.
That was bad form! Maybe the present reflects how they now see you!

Winterburn · 26/12/2025 18:31

This has to be a wind up, surely? 😂😂 I even tried reverse searching the image but nothing comes up! Even so I hope it’s just a horrible bookend you already own and this is for laughs! 😂

You gave them a cheapy snapfish calendar, and expected theatre tickets. And you thought that by them recommending that particular performance that meant they’d bought you tickets? 🤣

You treated them to a meal without checking what the prices were, couldn’t afford to pay, let them pay £300 they weren’t expecting to pay, and still expected expensive theatre tickets when all you’ve given them is a £6 calendar?

Why do you think the bookends are you? If they’re so hideous and don’t look anything like you, then here’s a thought, maybe they aren’t you?!

You sound like a perpetual victim to be honest, and nothing is ever your fault, but that everyone owes you a favour 🙈🤣

LittleGreenDragons · 26/12/2025 18:35

JustCabbaggeLooking · 26/12/2025 15:51

That's the way to do it! 😁

Thanks for making me laugh 😂

Sorry OP but either pay them back for the meal or buy the tickets for the concert or something!

IMissTheLittleBluePackets · 26/12/2025 18:35

@Winterburn I did the same (reverse searched). It's too mental to be believed 😂

Just send them the bloody money and an apology in a card saying sorry for the delay.

Absolutely correct! Not to late to send the money to them.
