Inappropriate present, hideous bookends and me in drag!!!!

I love christmas, and I love christmas presents, I got my best friend a lovely calendar showing photos that were precious to me throughout the year of all the good times we have shared, in return, and this is so strange, I got two bookends, which have obviously been handmade, but look like my face, but in a grotesque punch and judy way, I'm not sure whether they are supposed to look so scary, but they are hideous, I actually had nightmares about them last night, and on top of that, a smaller 3D figurine which is basically me looking like a drag queen in hideous blonde hair and a massive red bow, they obviously took a long time and I get that, but I wonder what they are trying to tell me, they have sent me a message asking what I think of them and I really don't know what to say, to be honest, Im quite upset they see me that way. Im just a normal person who loves christmas, I was hoping for tickets to see a christmas carol or something like that.

We still need to see the bookends 😃

Well, she doesn't really. Given how vindictive and/or cruel they've been, she should just give them her share of the 300 quid bill (it sounds as though they were taking the piss anyway, ordering pricey items). I think @confusedgoldilocks should reply to them saying the gifts are hideous, but you knew that already ya couple of fannies.

How is it taking the piss?? OP said for them to order whatever they liked. A £40 bottle of wine isn't that wild and there wasn't a wine menu anyhow so presume they just asked for a sauvignon blanc or whatever and no one knew the price until the bill came. They're the ones who've paid for it and said not to reimburse. They couldn't be less piss-taking!

OP picked the venue, and kept encouraging them to order more and more as it was “her treat”. £300 for three people, for three courses, nibbles, coffee and multiple bottles of wine, is really not a lot. You could probably get pretty close to that in PizzaExpress.

I thought the best friend was a gay man.

Based on what info?

MungoforPresident · 26/12/2025 17:33

You just cannot take someone out for a meal and they end up paying £300, then you expect £300 tickets to a show as well. That is preposterous. You need to pay that money asap and to say you do "not feel like paying" is a terrible attitude.

All else pales by comparison.

In offering to take people out, you should have researched prices and places too. I am surprised she managed any gifts at all when she is £300 down to begin with.

What a weird take on the situation. OP quite clearly says she encouraged them to order whatever they wanted and she'd pay. She tried to play Lady Bountiful but didn't have the money to follow through; she completely embarrassed everyone and needs to pay the money back.

LoopyLeela · 26/12/2025 17:39

This is actually quite well executed. But I think outside of Halloween the taste is very specific

FlyingApple · 26/12/2025 17:42

Put the money in an envelope and shove it thru their letterbox..then package up the gift and leave it on their doorstep with a note saying.
I know I messed up with the money for the meal however this present is hurtful and the video you all watched on the tv of me opening it is shameful of you as friends. I feel humiliated.

I'm sorry you had to open this awful gift

Edited

Yep. Do this. Only option really.

feathermucker · 26/12/2025 17:44

I don’t understand why you got your friend a calendar and expected expensive tickets in return knowing that you o es them money for the meal?! And why wouldn’t it check before encouraging the ordering of things that you had funds?!

This is very strange.

walkingaroundsostrenegrene · 26/12/2025 17:44

I would just be honest. Ask if they are supposed to be you. If your friend says yes, tell them how offended you are. Take it from there.

HollyhockDays · 26/12/2025 17:45

So you took friends out for a meal but couldn’t afford it? And all yours cards were declined so you had no way of paying it even by splitting it up between cards or offering to only pay half? How much did you think it would be?

And now you think they have made / have had made bookends to look like you in order to insult you?

Noshadelamp · 26/12/2025 17:46

confusedgoldilocks · 26/12/2025 15:55

it actually gets worse because they knew i would be at my brothers on christmas day so they asked my brother to film it on his mobile phone and send it to them when I opened them, i was horror struck as I removed the wrapper, but my family thought it was hilarious, I begged my brother not to send it but he did, and my face is a real picture, Im shocked and confused, but everyone else is laughing, and now my friend has just rang, they have it on their tv screen and everyone is laughing there as well, as they are at a family do, I've been turned into a figure of fun for someone elses amusement so no, I dont feel like paying for the meal now,

This sounds spiteful and cruel of them and completely over the top compared to not being able to pay a bill.

A real friend wouldn't do this. I think if you look back over your friendship you'll see there were other examples of off behaviour, gaslighting, making fun of you dressed up as misunderstandings or "just a joke".

I can see why you're upset op.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 26/12/2025 17:53

I really cant work out what is going on in this post however you do seem to have raised some red flags. You sound emotionally imature. Why the heck would u take someone out for dinner and encorrage them to run up the bill if you couldnt afford it? why are you sending random pics of yourself to friends? I have a family member who does this and eveyone laughs at her. I think the calender was a poor choice of a gift you sound quite full of your own self importance and i think your friends are trying to tell you something.
Use this as a wakeup call/ learning curve. Get some councilling and move on.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 26/12/2025 17:53

Are you any good at art and crafting, OP? Because if someone did this to take the piss out of me I'd be sending a similar themed item back to them.
