Two friends who spent all of high school saying they were anti smoking immediately started smoking when we got to college.

How old are you, 17?!

If that's the worst you've come across you're a very lucky person.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 24/12/2025 11:24

jeezo, I was going to say when my friend lost his home, his marriage and his job after taking up chemsex in his mid 30s but you win, @OneUmberJoker.

I had a crush on someone in sixth form who was a complete teetotaler in year 12. They didn't drink at all. Something changed after their 18th birthday. They wanted to go clubbing with their friends. I'm guessing they got encouraged to drink.

She then started taking drugs recreationally.

ChristmasElvie · 24/12/2025 11:27

A male friend who was so fun and lovely got dragged into red pill nonsense online over lockdown and we don’t speak anymore.

My daughter said she didn't like Taylor Swift but I caught her singing along to "shake it off" the other day

Ive only ever known my DH to wear black trainers but last night I looked over his shoulder whilst he was on his phone and he was on the JD Sports website looking at white trainers!!!
I shouted “who even are you?!?!” I don’t recognise him anymore

KeepAwayFromChildren · 24/12/2025 11:48

My postman. He wears shorts ordinarily but today he is wearing trousers. Actual fucking trousers. Combats with all the pockets trousers. Tucked into his socks trousers.

Christmas is ruined, now and forever! Heartbroken doesn't cover it.

That was my first thought too

A schoolfriend of mine went to the same uni as me. I bumped into him during freshers week to discover that in the month or so since I'd last seen him, he had dropped his perfectly nice, normal Scottish accent and was speaking as though he had come direct from the Home Counties - the most outrageously posh, faux English accent I'd ever heard. He was holding forth to some new friends with a stream of lies about his supposedly incredibly privileged upbringing.

He was shooting me absolute daggers and I could feel him willing me not to say anything. I didn't, but I always wondered if he ever felt he could being a friend or girlfriend home to meet his family...

There goes his Xmas tip

drspouse · 24/12/2025 11:52

I didn't see him in this phase, but a very clean living ex boyfriend couldn't find a job after university and apparently started taking heroin.
This is from a mutual friend though as he only wrote to me later saying he'd "been unemployed".

A good friend from childhood was very strait-laced until 16 when she discovered clubbing and EDM. She then did another 180 in her late 30s and got into holistic therapies, wild swimming and fell running.

surreygirly · 24/12/2025 12:05

Brightbluesomething · 24/12/2025 12:27

My adult DS spent 3 long years as a glory hunter supporting Man City in his early teens. I came very close to disowning him. Thankfully he saw sense and now supports our team again and goes to matches with me. We don’t talk about that extremely disappointing phase now but it was the most difficult of his childhood.
I could have understood drinking to excess or even taking drugs (neither of which he has done) but this was like a dagger to the heart 😢
